Have you ever wondered how every NFL team got its name? Well I did too!
I wanted to know how every Football Name changed through the years, so I decided to take an unreasonably long time to research each team and create this video. Hopefully you learn a thing or two, too! Each team is listed in the order that they were founded or became a part of the NFL. And since location plays a huge role in the team name (like 50%) I also hit every move as a part of this video!

I like to think that in some alternate universe, Phil-Pitt never disbanded, and the Pennsylvania Steagles play in central Pennsylvania with a metallic, hammer-wielding bald eagle as their mascot.
Sounds like something out of the new Dr. Strange! Love the sound of it!
@@JustinLearnsThings One person that I know on Discord has an alternate universe where the Winnipeg Jets were put to sleep in 1996, with the Coyotes debuting as an expansion team. In this universe, the Thrashers never existed (he didn’t like them), so some players (Patrik Stefan and Ilya Kovalchuk, for example) were instead drafted by the teams they played with afterwards. In this universe, the Jets were restored in 2011, after sleeping for 15 years. Which begs more questions than answers. For example: What about Bryan Little? He played his entire career with the Thrashers/Jets organization. What about team records? The Jets 2.0’s franchise history also includes the Thrashers, and the Jets 1.0’s history is owned by the Coyotes.
No God no why lol
I feel like that probably wasn't allowed to happen because so many people would root for them lol.
I like to mix sports teams so this sounds like something I would do
Fun fact: the Minnesota Vikings were the first professional sports team to be named after a state and not a city. However the Minnesota Twins which moved to Minnesota at around the same time were the first team named after a state to actually play a game because their season started before the Vikings did.
Yeah they're both the worst franchises ever can't win

Wouldnt New York count?
@@aidanmcgaugh5419 New York is short for New York City. I live in NJ. To avoid confusion with the rest of the state of NY we say things like " I'm going to Manhattan" or "My Uncle lives in Brooklyn". We usually mentioned the area of the city by Borough or neighborhood. Like "the best food is in Manhattan's Chinatown" or "stay out of Flatbush, Brooklyn".

A little more about the Bengals. Yes, the modern Bengals were named after a team from the 30s but that original team got its name because the Cincinnati Zoo had recently received some Bengal Tigers. Almost no zoos in America had tigers at the time so it became a huge tourist attraction. Very interesting video. I learned a lot. I think the most interesting story was the Tennessee Titans. I can't believe you didn't mention how the Saints only became a team in New Orleans because Congress had to pass a new law to permit the leagues to merge to avoid anti-trust laws, and the two Congressmen instrumental in passing that law were both representing Louisiana and wanted a team in their state. So glad you have every league. It's very interesting and informative. I grew up across the st. from Joe Madro then Sid Gillman's Oline coach. I used to play with his two sons, he'd draw up plays for us in his backyard yard fun times. When Barron Hilton brought Gilman and his staff over from the Rams Joe told us that the Chargers got their name from Hilton having to use his CC to pay for everything. And then there's the whole Browns/Ravens saga. I find it pretty funny how many early football franchise owners just decided to name their team the exact same name as the MLB franchise already in their city. Must've made for some confusing August/September conversations: "Hey buddy, you wanna go to the Giants game?" | "Sure, who are they playing?" | "The Cardinals" | "Cool, I wonder how many runs they'll score" | "Uh... runs?" I believe part of the reason the Tennessee Titans chose the name 'Titans' is also a nod to the New York Titans (Jets). Also part of the reason for choosing Houston Texans is a nod to the Dallas Texans (now KC Chiefs)
Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
A few years back the Jets played the Titans in throwback uniforms. So it was effectively Titans vs the Oilers...but the team wearing Titan uniforms were not the Titans...that one was a bit weird on the surface but also cool.
That is a bit trippy! 😂
Explanation Jets were named the Titans in their first ever years Titans we’re Oilers when they were in Houston
Would be cool if the old logos were included. I know that would be a lot of work but I think it would be cool to see. Great work on these!
Yeah I think I would like to do a future video about how the logos were designed and changed over time, but haven’t quite gotten my mind around that one yet!!
1) The Chargers original name is “Super Chargers”. 2) The AAFC Buffalo Bills we’re originally named after a barber shop singing group from the area. The modern Bills were named after the traveling show “Wild Buffalo Bill” due to Ralph Wilson loving the show as a child.
It's crazy how much depth the ravens name and culture has compared to other teams in the NFL.
Yeah a lot of the NFL names aren't as clearly outlined purposefully as the ravens!
I get a chuckle from the fact that the WWII-era combo team Card-Pitt was informally known as the “Carpets” because they were so bad that other teams walked over them on the field.
The quality in these videos are insane! Really great work on these I loved the MLS one!

Another reason Minnesota was named the Vikings (other than it's high Scandinavian population) was because of the idea that Vikings might have come there in 1362. There was also an old 1970s WFL (World Football Leauge) team in Houston called the Texans.

I think they still are called the Big Red sometimes, like in AZ sports radio
They were also called the "Gridbirds" and "Football Cardinals" in St. Louis.
New York had this as well with the Giants.
It gets even sillier. There was a baseball team in St Louis called the Browns that existed for several years at the same time as the Cleveland Browns. They had no relation. The St Louis Cardinals were previously called the St Louis Browns, but had no relation to the football team or the other baseball team. The St Louis Browns eventually moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles. The Cleveland Browns eventually moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.

Nice job on this video. Your description for the Chargers is only half right. While yes that it is true "Charge" yell. The other part of the naming comes from Barron Hilton. Really interesting to see how many NFL team names were originally tied to their baseball counterparts. In addition to paying tribute to the team who they may have shared a stadium with, I wonder if that was also done to combat the perception that football was a “barbarian” sport in early 20th century society, while the perception of baseball had improved significantly to one of a more “classy” sport…especially after appointing a commissioner after the 1919 Black Sox scandal.
Yeah really interesting how teams were tied together like that!
The original Cleveland Browns team moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.

Why are so many of these teams former names meant to match thier cities MLB teams?
Good Question! I would guess that the most common reasons were they either shared facilities to begin with, they shared some amount of ownership at the time, or during the earlier years of the league, they wanted the credibility of being associated with already established sports teams in the city. I haven't looked at it too much, but those are the ideas that first come to mind as potential reasons! I'll have to do some reading!

There are 3 teams from the old AAFC that still exist, the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and the San Francisco 49ers.
The Indianapolis Colts are not the same as the AAFC-NFL Colts. The original Colts failed after the 1950 season. The new Colts were founded in 1953 when Carroll Rosenbloom and others purchased the assets of the defunct Dallas Texans. The only thing the teams had in common was the name.
The Seattle Seahawks name was copied from an area high school... the Anacortes Seahawks. The Seahawk name was originally copied from the title of a popular novel in the 1920's. The book title was the name of a pirate ship in the novel. The Seahawk novel was later made into a movie of the same name.
The AAFC in 1946 had a one year team called The Miami Seahawks.
That is true and the Miami Seahawks moved to Baltimore and became the first incarnation of the Baltimore Colts. They became an NFL team in 1950 and folded after that season.
