  • Death is terrible for anyone. Young or old, good or evil, it's all the same. Death is impartial. There is no especially terrible death. That's why death is so fearsome. Your deeds, your age, your personality, your wealth, your beauty... They are all meaningless in the face of death -Sunako

Even Satan, that fool understimated the beauty of not being alive, then to be perpetually roasted alive in Hell. Death means to be shut off from existence, it is better than living alive whilst being crushed in agony By God - granted, if you are idiotic enough to incur the wrath of God!

    • Honestly, music like this makes me question myself. Makes me question what I am even doing with my life, what other people doing with their life! I dont see anyone smile as much as they genuinely used to! It cannot be that social media and technology have just taken over everyone's mind! Think about it! Do you even live anymore? Do you even still have the love for detail like when we were kids. Are you one with time or are you just passive!? Wake up! Start going outside WITHOUT the phone! Go biking and live in the moment and one day you can think naturally back and thus create real memories and NOT on the phone! Where are the people that used to put so much effort into art and creativity aka music and fun activity events?? Entertainment is when you go to festivals and attend real emotional concerts and NOT because of the money! Artists should also be more natural again! Find real passion and show real love. Lets crush this artificial industry and LET US MAKE HUMANITY GREAT AGAIN! We are human beings! Not robots. We need to be able to open our hearts again. Start being more focused again and not be distracted by some addictions like drugs, smoking, alcohol and screen time. We dont need these if we can make life great on our own again! We natural beings! It is in our nature to love and to be open.

    • I mean... in my opinion yeah, it's still okay to want to live, but it's best if the dead stays dead. The vampires' lifestyle kinda prevents them from being able to exist as a permanent species anyway. (Once they take over the world, they're going to run out of food/humans with even more mouths to feed.) It would be easier to rest when you aren't revived in the first place. (Then again, as Zeke said, they could go by fourths instead of trying to "DESTROY EM ALL" and turn them to vampires.)

    @Lisa-th4zg@Lisa-th4zg5 жыл бұрын
    • The reason of it being underrated is people like me, that love action and momentum are so easily bored with light novel like story telling, so the first 18 episodes are difficult not to drop, for example the only reason i was able to finish it was that i knew good stuff was coming because of spoilers. This anime really has that 90's structure to it, just like Heroic age, if you manage to get through the slow part, the explosive burst of emotion is that much more meaningful. I admit, that huge build up was totally worth it, and maybe the anime is better because of it, even if it makes it an unappreciated gem.

  • This anime is so philosophical it has such deep meaning to it. It irritated me in the beginning as it was slow but when the story built up I started questioning my own thinking honestly made me question morality. Even now when I listen to the soundtrack I can track back to those emotions and no doubt i have tears in my eyes. This is one of the very few animes that have an outstanding soundtrack which will engross u more into the show and if you are a fan of instrumentals and anime osts believe me you will save these tracks in your heart even before your mp3! So if you are a kind of person who likes thinking and questioning and who likes mystery I would recommend this anime strongly. it is sadly not looked very well upon by the anime community but such shows rarely come.

    • +akritithegreat I clicked on this video then decided to pause it and watch the anime. So I did just that and not one tear was shed, then I came back to this video and I felt a rush of emotion and my eyes became teary. I agree with your opinion and how powerful this soundtrack is. In the end I didn't really cry because you reminded me that we aren't really sure where we stand(morality), so I realized that there was no need to become upset over something I don't know.

      @thoughtfulluis6202@thoughtfulluis62028 жыл бұрын
    • +akritithegreat Makes you question certain aspects of morality, like whether or not someone is deserving of death, even if they are a threat. It actually reminds me somewhat of Golem from Lord of the Rings. There are multiple places in which both Bilbo and Frodo had both justification and the means to kill Golem but chose not to. Gandalf remarks on this saying "even the very wise cannot see all ends". This is probably the most foreboding line in literature history because without Frodo and Bilbo's mercy Golem wouldn't have been alive to take the ring from Frodo and cause its destruction.

The imagination and spiritual strength of Shakespeare's evildoers stopped short at a dozen corpses. Ideology-that is what gives evildoing its long-sought justification and gives the evildoer the necessary steadfastness and determination. That is the social theory which helps to make his acts seem good instead of bad in his own and others' eyes, so that he won't hear reproaches and curses but will receive praise and honors. That was how the agents of the Inquisition fortified their wills: by invoking Christianity; the conquerors of foreign lands, by extolling the grandeur of their Motherland; the colonizers, by civilization; the Nazis, by race; and the Jacobins (early and late), by equality, brotherhood, and the happiness of future generations.... Old anime are definitely the best, anime nowadays will never be able to compete with old anime, and I personally think that Shiki will forever be the best horror anime, it’s not cliché, it’s not very predictable (I could hardly predict anything at all to be honest, I’d predict something but then something completely different would happen) it’s well thought through, none of it is rushed, the concept behind it is great yet very sinister and above all else Shiki has a very technological side to it that involves a lot of in-depth thought for you to completely understand the meanings behind it, something which most anime nowadays either don’t have, or are just very shallow with their meanings and depth. Man was Shiki deep.

    • Except she literally is the mastermind behind the killings. And she's doing it for an entirely selfish reason. Also it's directly stated at some point in the anime that a vampire cannot kill with a single bite/drinking session. And yet somehow she apparently "accidentally" killed someone when feeding which is why she ended up on the run? Lies.

  • I watched the show because I was searching for top emotional anime songs, and Eau de Vie and Day and Night were just stuck in my head...I knew there had to be a backstory elsewhere. I watched Shiki and stuck to the episodes every night--it kind of changed me because its words were very powerful and meaningful. The horror style showcases life and humanity's abomination. The thing is, music is just supposed to be a 'background' or an 'etc' to an anime, but composers like Takanashi Yashanaru (also from Naruto) has elevated the musical standards of every anime...the music itself has a soothing story to it; it's already filled with too much emotions that when added to the story, you will tear up, because it's a great combination. Good story and a good music, best anime.

  • I honestly really loved this anime. It was very emotional, and I can agree the soundtrack is indeed very powerful. I remember watching Shiki and becoming kind of impatient, as the show was quite slow in the beggining. However, it did satisfy me near the end. I started to think more deeply about what "evil" really is. It can certainly change your view of things, and I've never watched an anime before with such a clear message. It made me shed a few tears... or maybe more than a few.. I'm quite upset not many people know of Shiki, so I try to tell all my friends about it. Although, that's quite hard since people don't really look at the true meaning of it. They rather think of it as, "scary", quite possibly because of the gore and all. But, if you really do pay more attention to the story, it can really get to your soft spot.

    • I believe there is actually a thing such "evil" Evil does exist wether one wants to accept/believe that or not but with shiki I think it was a combination of fear and misunderstanding. I believe the war in the end could have very well been avoided. The shiki despite the way they went about things, just wanted a home to call their own, to have a family. Sotoba was to be their home. The villagers of sotoba were just people who hated change, they refused to accept it and were trapped in their old ways. With that kinda mindset it's obvious that there would have been some fall out. However ignoring that the villagers were also kind and caring and was open to having the shiki around even though they didn't know what the shiki actually were. Now with that said I believe that if the shiki spoken to the right individual such as seishin then they could have worked something out. They could have organized a blood drive of sorts to help out the shiki with their hunger. There was many obvious solutions in my opinion. They really could have lived side by side as family but the shiki choose what was easier to them and began terrorizing and feeding on the villagers. Thus the humans retaliated. It was a sad turn of events no matter which way you look at it. A war truly didn't have to happen. Honestly I can't even bring myself to watch through shiki in entirety again. While I *was* on the side of the humans I did care for the shiki and although megumi was made to be a cruel girl I felt for her, I understood her situation and her pain and I just wanted to comfort her. Whoa this is a long comment lol, sorry. This is just my opinion on the matter.

How you interpret this anime is up to you, but I love that it actually allows you to do so, which is rare in the horror genre. For me it is an invasive and aggressive species that is gradually becoming more human, while still not being compatible with humans. The humans on the other side show that they can be as brutal as beasts themselves, leaving no room for aggressors.

A must recommend to anime lovers

  • I frankly love this series so much. This anime gets a bit of hate. You never know what side you'll end up on. I am particularly more on the side of the Shiki. One must do what they can to survive. I also understand that people aren't too fond of the Shiki because they are 'monsters' and the catalysts of destruction in this, but please, this is all an opinion and others really shouldn't hate on some of these characters.

    • +DrkChrome I fully agree with you.That is the whole beauty of this show. When I first watched it, I went in completely blind. I didn't know a thing about it, just it's name, so while watching it, I learned alongside the characters. In the beginning I was confounded at what was going on, working my brain overtime to construct an answer, then as the series went on and more pieces fell together, I understood. Since most of the exposition was on the human side at first, I leaned more toward them, but the more I watched and the more I learned about the shiki and their plight, suddenly, I didn't know who I supported more. One episode I was human, then next shiki. My sympathy for both sides rebounded and flipflopped episode after episode until the very end, and even during that final sequence and having to think back upon it over a year later as I type this, I still don't know who's side I'm on. Both are at fault, but both have valid reasons for their actions, and at the center of it all is their unified fear of the opposing side. It paints a powerful picture that there really is not a true 'good' or 'bad' side, just opposing forces divided by dire misunderstanding. It certainly is the most beautiful and powerful anime I've ever watched thus far.

  • the way I see it, the Shiki are cursed to have a second chance at life but must stab their own humanity in the back in order to exist. a clash, paradox of human nature. the animal sense to survive, clashing with the human ethics and morality that make up such a vast element of what it means to be human. the humans, meanwhile face the same, living in a world where they must turn on those they loved in order to prevent further pain and suffering. they become brutal, a wolf and her cubs cornered by what the wolf used to think was her mate, they fight, their desire for survival driving them to vanquish the other, but once doing so, can only grieve as they realize that their souls have been shredded in the process. the special cruelty of it is that a Shiki seems to need about 1/8 of a human's total blood quantity to survive on a mere daily basis. therefore, it is impossible for a Shiki and a human to coexist peacefully, (as seen by Tohru and poor natsuno) as the Shiki can only look on in despair as it's fellow human is slowly drained and ultimately dies. it also seem that this is also the minimum. we see at the start of the show that a single woman cannot live with two men, imagine forcing yourself to starve merely so those around you remain barely alive. but as to my conclusion, the Shiki MUST be exterminated. it's cruel, it's obvious to see how much they suffer and how one feels compassion, but what it boils down to, is a prey vs predator scenario. the prey can live fine without the predator, but the predator needs to kill its prey in order to live. Humanity has clawed it's way to the top of the Homo family, it's clawed it's way to the top of the food chain, and we have developed societies and civilizations to protect ourselves. the moment a force of nature in the form of another species rises to contend with us, and cannot peacefully co-exist, then humanity must eliminate the threat, or in other words, the wolf must strike down the hyena or it will live in a system where the hyena takes more and more of her cubs, before the wolf's family is doomed. It's cruel, it's harsh, especially since the Shiki used to be human. if it weren't the case, then humanity would curse itself to eons of mental torture as they struggle in a world where loved ones rise and strike down former family. the threat must be eliminated, the pain must be endured so that this demonic situation can never plague humanity again. the dead remain dead and do not die prematurely, and no one is forced to live through the mental hell of being a Shiki. The humans were right in eliminating the Shiki, as the doctor realized. it was tearful, heinous work, but it ensured their own survival over an enemy that should never have been, it ensured that the threat did not spread, and it ensured the following generations and the survivors would be able to return to a peaceful society. but why humanity and not the Shiki? simple. a world of humans is able to exist, a world of rotting corpses and Shiki could not. unless the Shiki started farming humans and forcing them to reproduce at excessive rates, and considering how multitudes of the food would become Shiki, and therefore demand a greater amount of human livestock, it's a naturally self-destructive system. inevitably, the Shiki will die off, surrounded by corpses dried of blood. humanity at least has a chance. even more so, you'd be turning hundreds of millions of years of family mentality wrought about by evolution on its head. imagine a world were you were born on a human farm, raised for your blood, and are ultimately served up to your parents, grandparents, strangers who look exactly like you, who your very DNA is told to recognize as friendly, as an ally. imagine a world where you have to look at every elder in the same way as a crocodile, a lion, a shark, hungry for your flesh. it screams of insanity. a mothers love would be tested at every meal, social, community ties would be snapped every day. but, I also cannot disregard some elements. ultimately, all the Shiki must be exterminated, but I see the Shiki split into two categories. the ones who adapt, detach themselves from humanity and become hunters, losing their humanity (although plagued by it) like Sunako, Nao, Tatsumi and the traitorous Seishin monk. and those who remain steadfast to their humanity, refuse to become an enemy of those they love and starve to death/take out the other category with them. like Tohru (eventually), Ritsuko and Natsuno. those trios have my respect and my allegiance. Tohru was a really interesting case, a broken boy torn between his humanity and his corrupted primal instinct. he killed, he took down Natsuno, but ultimately, the humanity won out and he finally got that eternal date with Ritsuko he always wanted. he is seen in my books as an enemy that has dealt pain but took himself out before he could do further harm. the Villagers, also, dealt appropriately. they extracted revenge and eliminated the cause of what had robbed them of their family, and then had to put down the rest. in a truly horrific situation of father killing son, father killing daughter, sister killing brother that's why the doctor and the tanky grandfather have my respect. they had to go through mental torture in order to save the remaining ones they loved. the doctor killed his wife to find out how to kill the enemy, and the father had to kill his own son, and other villagers so that they could never harm any others. in some cases, I felt the death some characters deserved was just. others, like the collateral damage of Seishin's family, was against my moral compass, but in this case, it's understandable to see why what was done was done. they had to eliminate the threat, and if even one got away, then everything could start over again, they couldn't afford to take chances. Thus, they were under pressure, and although regrettable, the misjudged actions of killing wounded humans and the monks family were understandable and were outweighed by the situation at hand. both sides had to tear their humanity to shreds, and humanity had to do what it had to do, and the Shiki suffered and were eliminated in order to ensure their unwilling reign of horror was brought to an end. On Sunako's quote: "I think death is equally terrible for everyone. Young people, old people, the good, the bad; it's always the same. It's rather fair in its treatment. There's no such thing as a particularly terrible death, that's why it's frightening. Your behavior and age, your personality, your wealth, beauty, your personal beliefs; all the things that add up to make us who we are, they only matter while we're alive. Death makes every last one of them null and void. So any death is terrible." -yeah duh, but, the way you die is also very important. the last moments of your life, that conclusion to your finite presence on this world, is critical. a child born into a world of pain and suffering for months before death is way worse then a 92-year-old man passing peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. the baby was blessed with life, and the cruel lottery of life dealt her with a sickening one. in the grand scheme of thing, Sunako is right, but when drawn into the context of humanity, and human life, it becomes crucial how and when we die. death is the ultimate leveler, it comes to us all. (until someone invents either biological or digital nervous system replication so the consciousness can be transferred to another state. {a bit like plugging in a USB and transferring (not backing up, to avioid that whole "is it the same ship if you replace every pla....) your hard drive to another computer [don't get your hopes up, might never happen]}). a bit boggoling, sorry :) have a merry long life everyone! it's such a facinating story, and anime has truly bestowed us a philisophical delight in this one. god i love this show.

    • if you think it another way humans are for shikis like animals to humans: they hunt humans like humans hunted animals before. If you dont wanna die then you have to adapt fast and be able to live as a shiki. Those, who were able to leave their past as a human-being behind had great chances for survival best example Megumi Shimizu: I liked her, just because for her adaptability for her unusual situation, unlike a lot of other shikis, who couldnt do that. (if she wouldnt have been killed the most dumb way possible ... Natsuno ruined her indirectly even though he had not much to do with her besides starting the witchhunt with the doctor so its just ... love for the wrong guy? you could philosophize about that too if you want) Now if you think about it the Shikis had their own little society, rules, hierarchy etc. Would you think them as animals just because they drink blood to survive? If yes then what about humans? They breed animals just to eat them because he needs to eat to survive, there is almost no diffrence between human-animal relationship and a shiki-human relationship. If you humans can take the right to be above other lifeforms, then why not the shiki? (if they werent been exterminated beforehand) Humans are still animals deep within everything else is just a lie, a facade for the proud little weak being himself because he doesnt want to be compared to lower lifeforms. (Im Sorry english isnt exactly my thing)

So I'm just as into it as I was the first time around. Rewatching it I notice more of the foreshadowing about Natsuo. Another thing I noticed is the anime is great but I think some details got left out. Like why does everyone think Kanamasa is unlucky? They thought that even before the Kirishikis moved in. There's also important characters that don't get the screen time to make people feel personally involved with them. I love the anime I just have a few unanswered questions.

About the castle ; because it looks awfully odd and it centered away on the mountains , so they see it as a creepy and demonic palace. • I love how the “boom” in epitaph at about 1:38 gives you a powerful feeling of peace, disturbance, and sorrow at the same time. It perfectly reflects the life cycle of the Shiki In the manga and anime.

  • this is one of the best soundtracks. the really slow and sad songs just capture a really beautiful and resigning aspect of death, it makes me wants to cry my eyes out

  • The music in this anime is really outstanding, the composer outdid himself. It creates and recreates atmosphere of the series so perfectly, you don't even need to rewatch it.

  • All these songs are absolute masterpieces. If Shiki didn't have these songs to add to the atmosphere of the story perhaps it wouldn't have been one of my favourites, nevertheless it was a fantastic anime.

  • Even though the characters struggle in the anime, it's me who feels helpless for some reason, because there's no hope, no way of miracles or plot armour, because the shiki simply cannot coexist so either they kill or get killed, while watching this is didn't understand, but after finishing it has kept me in a weird state of fictional trauma, I can't think things normally for some time now.

  • I just finished reading the manga, French edition, with the OST in my headphones. These 11 volumes were a long journey. Now I'll watch the anime.

  • 14:08 I don’t know why but this is one of the saddest picture in the whole video to me. This picture reminds me what could have happen if everyone turn into a shiki.
