  • Great idea, but a few suggestions I need to add: 1) Those cells need to be capacity checked prior to connecting them up. If the cells are different capacity then they will drain at different rates, and you'll be limited to the weakest cell. 2) Voltage of the battery is not everything. I have had cells below 2.5V that have delivered close to their rated capacity when checked. You need to charge them and capacity test them using Turnigy Accucel/SkyRC Imax/Opus/Liitokala etc. 3) With such a large amount of batteries in parallel, the solar panel is not worth having. Its rated at 3W so will charge at a current of 0.6A - not considering any losses in the step down to the battery, the wiring etc. With 8 cells in parallel, the solar charger will charge them up at

    • 1. No you wont be limited to the weakest cells capacity because they are in parallel that means the voltage will stay the same on each cell no matter what that is only valid if you use a 2s 3s 4s, 5s,6s battery connections 4. Spot welders are expensive plus you need nickel strips and if you solder very quickly like 3-4 secs then its fine

  • To give that plastic a smoother on its finish for the edges, take a blowtorch and quickly pass over it as it smoothens off the surface and does the job quite nicely. Don't hold for too long as it will warp and melt.

  • 1. Its dangerous to connect so many cells in parallel especially from different packs. If the voltage varies or you have one bad cell it will drain every cell down to its max voltage. You need to add a protection circuit... 2. Dont solder directly onto the battery... they are usually attached with a spot welder. 3. The amount of batteries is COMPLETE over kill for a solar panel of that size. 4. Music is cancer... 5. Use flux for better solder joints

  • Agree with Robert s, The only reason retail manufactures put solar panels on those power packs is because they know the average consumer is going to be to ignorant to know it would take months to charge and nobody is going to put these in the sun for extended lengths of time because somebody would just end up stealing it. The real question is why the uploader of this video installed one on his power bank. Having said that. He did do a very nice job. Thinking if he installed an external dedicated solar charging jack to plug in a larger 20 or 30 watt solar panel would make more since.

  • I don't understand why you needed a 5v step up module to charge up the batteries, can I build mines without it? The solar panel is already rated at 5v when at peak sun light. And since the batteries are hooked up in parallel, it can be charged with less than 5v - right? Also, should I use a diode connected between the batteries and charge cable to prevent back current? And would it be better if I just solder the wires connecting the solar panels onto the battery board so I don't have to connect it with the usb cable?

The extra current would greatly benefit here. Also. Don't skimp on the solar cells. The cheap ones might be tempting, but they most likely are pretty bad.
