Statler, an Indian flying fox, was born at a zoo in 1987. Since then, he's moved from facility to facility. For many years, he was kept in a small space and used for "education." When he arrived at Bat World Sanctuary in 2018, his caretakers made sure he’d have a happy and peaceful retirement.
To help save more bats like Statler, you can support Bat World Sanctuary here: thedo.do/batworld, and check them out on Facebook: thedo.do/batworldsanctuary.

    • @@judigrumm7190 not just rabies, problem is bats are "supercarriers" and most viruses and bacteria they carry don't actually affect them much due to their extremely adaptive immune systems. Hence why the "covid from bats" theory has so much traction in the scientific community - virus is in bat, bat and human don't notice, human eats bat, virus spreads throughout human population because the entire time while in the bat the virus was improving reproductive capabilities, "trying" (not conciously) to affect the bat. By the time such a zoonotic virus reaches a human by ingesting or being bitten by a bat, if it doesn't kill the human within a reasonable timeframe, it will spread extremely fast. This is not all bad tho, and the adaptive immune system of bats is being studied in an attempt to develop treatments for autoimmune diseases such as AIDS.

    • Flying foxes are amazingly cuddly. Just don't pet them on the back. I made that mistake once while handling a flying fox that my friend's family rescued from their yard during a storm. She (my friend's little sister named her Luna) chirped loudly and then tried to bite me. She immediately made amends by licking my fingers. Altogether, the flying fox moniker is spot-on, because they are indeed like little foxes with wings. The only real difference is that they eat fruit instead of small critters.

  • I'm glad he's in a safe place taken care of by the right people finally. Good care, good food, even other bat buddies and sunlight. His happiness shows. 💓

  • Awww this actually made me sad. Happy that he's safe, but the clipping of his claws was just gutwrenching. Love bats, they're so misunderstood, like many other animals. Warms my heart to see that he's cared for really well. 💓

  • We have a big orange baby street-rescue cat--and he loves on doorjambs when he's let in, loves on people for refilling his food, loves on furniture when you just greet or talk to him. I know just what you mean about the gratitude, and how simple yet deeply moving it is. Thank you for giving this baby such a wonderful life.

  • These bats are very sweet & not what most people perceive bats to be. They almost look like puppies w/wings. We need more people & programs like this to educate & protect our wildlife.

    • This is a FRUIT bat not all bats are cute loveable creatures and it's been documented that vampire bats can drink HUMAN blood and multiple children have died after being bit by rabid vampire bats. Not everything in this world is some cute loveable creature just because a video makes them seem harmless.
