it’s not even funny how much sweat can come off a dancer, it feels like a snowman melting in the summer sun 😭 ⛄️ ☀️

Just curious about body hair, do female dancers get conscious about not shaving their underarms/ legs especially that you usually wear sleeveless leotards and sometimes don't wear tights? And do male dancers complain if their partners have armpit hair?

Hi! I’m a third year ballet student at a professional dance school. And I’m 23, for context. In my experience, I have never met a female ballet dancer/student who doesn’t shave. It’s sort of one of the unwritten rules, of sexism which continues into ballet (it can be a veryyy archaic art form). I personally have never shaved my legs, I have quite pale leg hair which isn’t thick, but I still feel self conscious about being judged when changing/on the (somewhat) rare occasion that my legs are out. I went through a stage of about a year, one year ago, when I refused to shave my armpits. No one said anything to me, but I was paranoid that people were talking about me behind my back or were secretly judging me. I’m lucky I guess that I’m not a very hairy person naturally, but I let it get it quite grown out. I have since shaved them as I’ve realised that I have the freedom to make the choice, but I’m glad I did it as I now feel more comfortable in myself when it’s slightly grown out between shaves. I’ve seen a video before where an American ballerina Scout Forscythe (not sure of spelling!) answered this question and she said that she shaves hers because it’s makes a cleaner line, and ballet is all about lines. Which is a good point that I sort of agree with, however male dancers can be as hairy as they like without any sort of scrutiny. I haven’t had any negative comments from anyone before, but I’ve also not been in a pro company environment so I’m not sure what the consensus is in that setting.

It's just amazing how much pain ballet dancers endure and yet keep going for the love of the art.💝🩰💝
