Had mine since earlyJanuary now in the UK, great run around car, commuting to train-station. Full charge last about two weeks if you stay off motorways. Charges fast on 50Kw chargers, about 40 mins. Great car and the APP works for those icy mornings. I preferred this over the MG due to the tech.
I had this car since end of March and been happy with the car ever since. My last car was the bmw i3 and despite the bmw rear wheel drives much better but the comfort and tech on the BYD is too good.
I absolutely love mine! Had it since Nov and covered just under 8k. Performance is good, economy good, looks good and has a nice interior. I turn most of the assistance aids off!! I much prefer this over my old EVs which were cupra born, EV Niro and mg4. I didn't have a great experience with MG as the customer back up was shocking! In the dolphin 0-60 on the trip I've managed 5.9 in the wet cold 5deg weather.
I test drove the Dolphin at Everything Electric London yesterday. I really liked it. The outside styling reminds me of the Honda Jazz, the inside is toned down compared to some of BYD‘s other offerings. A good package, it does what it says on the tin in most aspects. I think it would sell very well if they could get the pricing right, taking into account the import tariff issue

Tish, about the computer/navigation on the BYD, I believe it runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon system (credit: Wheelsboy KZhead channel). As for the comments about the sticker price, the UK has a 25% tariff on Chinese-made imports (as I'm sure you know).
Great video Tish love the looks and the quality looks good the price is still expensive . Looking forward to the Renault 5 and Skoda epic lower price

Actually, BYD did not outsell Tesla in EV sales last year. Yes, BYD outsold Tesla as a whole, but BYD also makes PHEVs in other markets. However, BYD’s popularity is increasing massively in many places such as Latin America, so I do think BYD will eventually lead the global EV market, even without a presence in the US, Canada or most of central/Eastern Europe.

@@AutoSocialUK I won’t lie, a lot of news agencies said that BYD outsold Tesla in terms of EV sales through the whole of 2023, but not quite true.

A Chinese Hybrid is not like a Japanese/Western hybrid BYD has delivered over 3.5 million pure EVs. They also lead in electric buses and other commercial vehicles. TESLA Germany buys batteries from BYD. Within the next 3 years BYD will reach at least 2 million pure EVs per year if not 3 million. They are currently building at least 5 new major plants one in Hungary, one in Mexico and 3 in Brazil.

Ahh! Nice video Tish! You said smaller wheels, what size were they? I think its light and day better overall than the MG 4. Sad we wont see it here ib Cyprus for at least a couple of years, if ever!

There was a section on their website that listed the BYD centres that were due to open this year, including one literally around the corner from me...the page on their website has now disappeared - doesn't inspire confidence. We did consider an Atto 3, with the present dealer being 30 miles away...thinking we would soon have a dealer on our doorstep. I'm glad we didn't.
@@6ettinold Thank you for your comment, it prompted me to have another look on the BYD website and more dealers have been added including Derby and Nottingham, and they are opening soon. The proposed Derby dealer is at the location of the Vauxhall garage. On recently driving past it, there didn't seem to be a lot of activity going on there. My Nissan Note is just over 10 years old and is coming up to be replaced. I would like to buy an electric car and the BYD Dolphin could be a suitable replacement. One of those garages is about 4 miles from where I live and I will pop into it when it is a BYD dealer. Unfortunately the Dolphin is in insurance group 33, hopefully this will decrease in the near future.
Very good looking vehicle, both interior and exterior. The seats are really modern and stylish. The vehicle is electric which is great, but also small and simple for the price. And what sort of name is BYD Dolphin for a car 🚗? A different name should have been chosen for this car 🚗. I wouldn't get one because it's not so impressive too me. Nice review as always Tish and love 💕😘 the look you have today.
it's the basic model out of the 'ocean design theme' range. it's not supposed to be too striking for the price. i think byd purposely puts the build your dreams at the back for marketing and penetration purposes. it has said that all future models will not come with the wordings anymore. it only sells for $10000 in china. it's funny how western governments scramble in fear before the name byd ha. going green is good. wait no, going green is red flag. ok but no, going green is gonna be expensive. no wait, nevermind lol. thailand and indonesia and central asia (ok just global south in general) will be new hubs of adoption for future motoring.

Tish, the safety systems could be right, they have widened the dual carriage way where I live but have reduced the speed to 60 mile an hour.

Yes the UK cars will all now come on Hankook’s. I also now someone who took delivery of one and then had them swapped by the dealer for free.
If it's £20k I may consider it. Plus lack of dealers put me off.
i honestly think MG4 is better than Dolphin. Having sit in both cars in front passenger seats, MG4 is more spacious because MG4 is wider in dimension compared to Dolphin. But Dolphin backseats have better legrooms. Overall Dolphin is kinda small and not cheap.
The Dolphin is so much better made though. The MG4 just feels cheap and poorly built. Ultimately, you get what you pay for.
If you like a slow responding infotainment, then the MG4 is for you.

We've just bought a Dolphin. We went for the lower "Comfort" spec only because it doesn't have that panoramic roof which robs too much headroom. Sadly we had to go grey because the nice colours are reserved for the top "Design" spec, and the other choices were white, pink, purple or custard vomit.
It is a sad thing to say that the best colour is grey and I am fed up of these monochromatic colours. Unfortunately BYD think that the Dolphin is for young fashionable people who like statistically abnormal colours. Early Honda Jazzes and VW ID.3s were in these insipid colours, but they have seen the error of their ways and they are now in normal colours. I think that the best Dolphin colour scheme is white with a grey bonnet and roof, dolphin colours. But like you, I am concerned about the loss of head room with the panoramic roof. I will have a think about which trim to get when there is a dealership in my area, one is coming soon.
It’s not the worst looking car, and good that small cars are still out there in our dominant SUV market.

@@lucasroper46I am a fan of small cars and have had a few myself. But I have no interest in this thing. Expensive, heavy, dull design, boring/uninvolving to drive, questionable/unknown reliability and quality and worst of all Chinese and electric. A small car like this sure ain't progress!

The volume is very low.
Battery prices have fallen dramatically and that should filter through to new car prices. If possible, I would wait until cars like this drop in price by a fair old margin.
How is that considered a small car ?
Park it next to a KIA EV9.
Really interesting, I'm glad BYD have introduced a cheaper entry level model. I still think their pricing is too high, but this is a step in the right direction
it's not pricing. it's the government import duties and tariffs on chinese ev...all of a sudden no western govts talk about going green anymore. funny as heck.
@@alsetalokin88 I don't think that's the issue, Tesla, Volvo, MG, Polestar, Smart all face the same tariffs and their pricing is sorted. BYD is an unknown brand in the UK and they need to be more competitive on price
@@bill_heywood the dolphin sells for 10000 usd in china. In south east Asia it can be had for around 20000 usd.
@@alsetalokin88 exactly. Even allowing for extra transport costs and a 10%, tariff, the sale price in the UK should be lower

Voice control is better than buttons and EuroNCAP are missing this.

Electric vehicles with a decent range cost over £30000, I have a 60 mile daily commute, don't have access to off road parking and there's a lack of charging points in the area, I've owned my little diesel for 13 years, I could drive for 2 weeks between fill ups and it takes around 10 minutes, the only charger connected to the grid near me is in a car park which closes at night and costs a fortune to park there, I don't know what the cost is for charging, I wouldn't think it would be cheaper than my diesel which averages 80mpg, I also don't like the idea of paying by card, I'm old school, I pay with cash, my car has covered 150000 miles and still going strong, I'm not saying that a battery won't last 150000 miles, but will it be as cheap to run as a diesel averaging 80mpg? Electric vehicles are designed more for short journeys unless you buy a Tesla or something like that at nearer to £100000, as a depreciating asset, I'm not prepared to outlay that sort of money even if I had that much, I have three properties, all together they cost less than the average Tesla, VW bus, larger Kias and Hyundais, and they aren't depreciating
Is three million cars in 30 years a lot?
BYD has sold 7 MILLION NEVs in 10 years of which the 3.5 million pure EVs were sold mostly in the last 4 to 5 years. They were a battery maker before a car maker they have only been making EVs for 10 years and for the first few years mostly fleet taxis.
I think it's about time we called vegan leather what it actually is - plastic. I'm not having a go at you for using the expression because it is in common use but it is an expression that implies that it's good for the environment when it is oil based and difficult to recycle from my understanding.
Yeah, vegan leather is just another marketing gimmick. Should just call it faux leather or fake leather.
Vegan leather, as I understand it, only uses natural products that aren't derived from animals and are green.

@@RechargableBattery I had a Citroen C3 and it was great. Easy to drive, simple, manoeuvrable and easy to park. Never had any mechanical problems with it.
What the geniuses behind all this voice control don’t get is that a button is easy, try talking to a car with three kids in the car all talking at the same time. Yeah exactly unless you have trained the kids to go quiet on saying BYD it’s useless.
It is smart enough to know that the driver or passenger is talking. there is an option to only have the voice assistant to only respond to the driver. Chinese have thought of it all.

That must be in the top of the range one Tish. I was looking at a lower spec one a couple of months ago and it was no where near as nice as you describe. It was all cheap scratchy plastics not nice at all but for its price its probably not bad.
I’ve seen some BYD products about (mainly atto 3s), they didn’t look to great. Doesn’t help that one of them was on a tow truck. As bleak as things are now, I’m interested in seeing how they improve and innovate.
They outsold Tesla on EVs in the fourth quarter only.

Got to love those marketing guys. Renaming plastic as 'vegan leather' and getting people to swallow it is some skillful work. 😂 Also, the quickest way to ruin an otherwise compelling car is to fit a giant non-integrated central screen. Without exception they all look bloody awful.
They really need a new phrase now BYD. I am sick of the current one. Sorry I have heard of them and know all about them but I am sure there is loads of people out there who have not.

Looked over this car at Fully Charged last summer at Farnborough was not impressed with it. Poor quality materials, boring looks and uninspiring range with a very large price tag. Not for me.
By the time your BYD car leaves the showroom it will already have been responsible for creating more pollution than an average petrol car would generate in its entire lifetime - and by a long way too - you are being conned!

Teslas are made in china. would you pay more for one of those? BYD are better quality and the technology is far more advanced than European manufacturers.
You should mention in your reviews that EV have heavy depreciation and Some insurers will not insure BYD vehicles. Private buyers should stay far away from EVs. Range is nothing like the manufactures stated range, this is only achieved in a Lab, accelerating very slowly, and maintaining a constant speed of 28.5 MPH.
Avoid at all costs !
