THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS KNIFE DEFENSE...

Whether to take an offensive or a defensive approach in martial arts and is life is often a sweet science. But when it comes to a knife, we practice “Run-Jitsu” 🏃‍♂️
Training knife is often controversial, but we still like to explore various takes. In this video, Tuhon Apolo Ladra shows a great drill for developing sensitivity and talks about in Pekiti-Tirsia Kali it is important to only be on offense... in fact, their position is that defence “is the other guys problem.”
What are you thoughts about this philosophy?

  • Pretty much. Practice with someone using a large permanent marker and you get a pretty accurate indication of why to stay out of knife fights

  • I've heard "the loser of a knife fight dies on the spot, the winner dies 20 minutes later in the hospital"

  • Most knife attacks are sudden and invisible. So distance is your best defense and offense.

  • Been boxing for years, one of the best self defense tactics is limit your time around humans in public. Always be alert, don’t put nothing past anyone. Humans are more emotional than logical. Conflict is not always avoid, however “staying out the way” and keeping humans out of your business is very powerful if mastered.

  • The demonstration of the drill at speed has re-embedded my deep conviction to NEVER get trapped into a knife fight. All I can see is a rapidly spreading network of wounds forming all over one's body. It only takes a fraction of a second for the attacker to slip past your blocks and counters and you are done. No wonder warriors in the days of edged weapons wore armor, there is no way to protect all of the vulnerable areas from persistent skilled or even semi skilled attacks.

  • I love how every "knife defense" video always has "attackers" that never attack.

  • Knife defence is very very very hard, you will get cuts, however, in countries like mine and many other South East Asian countries, thugs do not carry guns or have access to guns as easily as in the West. Hence, weapons use in fights is sharp and pointed blades aside from stick etc... Learn to defend against knives and sharp weapons is a must and it is better than nothing, you'll have a better chance to survive when you cannot "RUN"! Funny that ppl always say "RUN", thugs do not show you they have a knife, the moment you see the knife, you have seconds to react, no one is going to show you the knife until they are close enough to stab your ass. If someone shows you a knife before even coming close to you, yes run! The purpose of the drills for knife defence is to train you to take as minimal damage as possible while returning the strikes to put the other guy down or give you enough time to escape. Growing up in rough areas in poor countries, fights are always with knives, machetes etc... the more you train, the higher chance you will survive with no life-threatening injuries. If you do see a knife coming and you can't run because you're trapped in a space and you have enough time, grab something else around you to defend it, a chair, your belt, roll up your newspaper or magazine, bare hand combat with knives is basically last resort and you better be sure your mind and your body are committed to accept damage and be ready with no remorse to really hurt the opponent or kill him. All your training will go to shit if your mind is not ready to really hurt or kill someone when facing such a situation.

  • There was like a month where me and a group of friends used to carry red sharpies on us at all times. The goal was, if you saw one of your friends, sneak up behind them and slice the "knife" across their throat and say "shhhhhh" while you "killed" them. We all had red marks on our throats for a month straight. It was pretty funny but got out of hand at one point lol

  • I knew a man with a black belt in 3 martial arts. He told me the best knife defense without a gun was to wrap a jacket around your arm and run like hell.

  • In Shotokan, we were taught to RUN AWAY if possible, even if you were winning the fight prior to the knife being introduced. If there is nowhere to run, and you must engage, you must immediately elevate the focus of your attack to lethal or near lethal strikes only. Your goal is no longer just to knock your opponent out, or to wound him so he won't continue fighting. Your very NEXT strike has to be a death strike, unfortunately. Lastly, don't attempt a Wing Chun "trap" move, because if that doesn't work with a knife in reality. You will be dead in a few seconds.

  • I did this for years. I taught classes , went to seminars from other teachers. Then one day a nutjob pulled a box cutter. My experience was, you are going to get cut. It’s very very different than what you think. The body is very aware that it’s in danger. Disarms and fancy stuff isn’t normally going to work. Exit if possible.

  • Yep no defense. I fought 3 dudes. By luck I was winning till the knife came out. I got stabbed 3x from behind, 1slice on my shoulder and super stab on my chest slicing my artery. Spent little over a month in coma, multiple surgries and years to rehabilitate. I'm about 80% but will never be the same. Thank you God above that I'm still here. Without him I'd be a goner.

  • The bottom line is you practice this drill for the situations where you are stuck in a close encounter with a knife. I've seen a fair share of knife fights where the person with the knife loses. The defenders focused mainly on kicking and finding objects to throw or swing. For example if you have a chair, you will have a decent advantage with range.
