Music video by Lorde performing Green Light. (C) 2017 Universal Music NZ Ltd.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I do my makeup in somebody else's car
We order different drinks at the same bars
I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth
She thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar
[Refrain]
Well those great whites, they have big teeth
Hope they bite you
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you're not in love no more
Did it frighten you
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?
On the light up floor
[Pre-Chorus]
But I hear sounds in my mind
Brand new sounds in my mind
But honey I'll be seein' you wherever I go
But honey I'll be seein' you down every road
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
[Chorus]
'Cause honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, I wish I could get my things and just let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
[Verse 2]
Sometimes I wake up in a different bedroom
I whisper things, the city sings 'em back to you
[Refrain]
Well those rumors, they have big teeth
Hope they bite you
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you're not in love no more
Did it frighten you
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?
On the light up floor
[Pre-Chorus]
But I hear sounds in my mind
Brand new sounds in my mind
But honey I'll be seein' you wherever I go
But honey I'll be seein' you down every road
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
[Chorus]
'Cause honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Yes, honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, I wish I could get my things and just let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
[Outro]
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it"

This song is so timeless. I feel like people didn't understand it because it is structured differently than the typical pop song but it's actually incredible
Really glad you spent time to write this. Thank you.
Dude... I'm a huge fan of this song and the album as a whole, but like... The song's structure is absolutely normal. Nothing out of the ordinary. It's: verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, outro. This structure isn't special. I'm not saying the song isn't special, I just think you're reading too much into it.
@CtrlALlTerrorS I would recommend SOPHIE. The guy would just fly into outer space.
People liked the song right away...
Some ppl just heard the upbeat tempo of the chorus and declared it to be 'too poppy.' Seemingly forgetting that Lorde is an artist who enjoys using and exploring many different styles of music, and that she will always do what she wants. As she should.
I love her wild dancing because it looks like she is getting rid of negative energy and I love it!
Dancing and music like this releases more than years of therapy can

Absolutely
The way she dances looks like the way that joy that you simply can't contain feels. Giddy and strange and glorious.
Some people complain because this sounds different than before. Here's some food for thought for you: David Bowie, the music legend himself, called Lorde "The future of music." Bowie was notorious for being a chameleon. Every one of his projects, from Ziggy Stardust to The Labyrinth, feel completely unique. They are all different and capture a different side of Bowie, but he is still present in all of these. They are different, but still cohesive. How does this tie into Lorde? Even though this is different, it's just a page from Bowie's book. It may be different than Pure Heroine, but that doesn't mean she's selling out. This is just another aspect of her, while still bursting from her own mind. Let's not bash her change in direction. Instead, let's celebrate that she's not going to stay in a niche simply because fans want her to. She's still exploring, and I'm excited to see where the path leads.
Ceeryle Brown well said 👌

For those of you who are complaining that Lorde sold out or fell into the pop machine, this is far from manufactured pop. This track has 4 different melodies that blend well into each other. A song this complex is nowhere close to manufactured pop. This is closer to indie pop than straight up pop. She's also 20, there's no way she's gonna write the same music as 16.
Eva Zhu Exactly ! she said herself this was cathartic pop
No its plain pop i dont get the extraness in explain this song's genre just because its Lorde. This song is a fucking bop though
the structure of this song is too familiar with pop we known
Yesssss!!! Lorde has naturally evolved as an artist. No matter what kind of music she releases, it's always going to be different from people's expectations
JMLRH lol I'm not explaining just because it's Lorde. I'm explaining because many people don't understand that pop has many subgenres and you can't just categorize it all as "machine manufactured pop"

I've been to a lot of shows but this song was my favorite concert moment of all time. Everyone single person was losing their mind dancing. I'll cherish the memory forever!
That’s what your supposed to feel in a song and this song is one of the best at showing that!
she didn't release anything for 3 years and people expect her to have the same sound. she grew up, got more celebrity friends, moved to a completely different country, and had a break up. I love this and I'm eager to hear the album! She is blossoming and I'm happy for her
I love the way she changed
Jeff Busby I'm excited for her 2nd album omggggg
Listen, I don't even hate it. I kinda like it, but it she definitely moved more into the mainstream pop sound. She became the white teeth teen. I didn't want her to come back with the same sound. My favorite artists are the people who do something different every time. I had that expectation for her as well. But even with switching up the sound, there was no real risk taken here. Definitely not a strong single unfortunately. I still have hope for the album. A lot of artists market their commercial friendly singles first, and leave the best stuff on the album.

Dear Lorde, Please come back. The world needs one more like this. Please. From: Heartsick fan.
Jesus has changed my life, He answered my prayers, i had been praying for years so I can get baptized and He answered that prayer when the time was right. Both my parent use to drink alot and plus my dad use to smoke cigarettes and I use to suffer because of that my dad has also fall away from his faith at that time but Jesus sent one of His followers to my dads work and then he use to talk to my dad about His life back together with Jesus to build a relationship with Him and that same year around Christmas a bit after my dad got sick and the follower of Jesus prayed for my dad to get better and he did, but while he was sick he did not smoke or drink and even after that he never drink or smoke again Jesus has freed him from that trap which he was in since he was a teenager. My dad has built his relationship with Jesus and now is free of his past and lives for Jesus. After I got baptized I still was not close enough to Jesus but after a few months the Holy Spirit who is living inside me found a way to make me take my relationship with Jesus and I did. Later on I had my final exams and I barely studied, i told Jesus that He is my priority and it my grades doesnt matter however I had faith in that i would pass because of Jesus and when I got result o saw He did not let me down and I pass all my subjects only because of Him. A time I was praying for a job and the week after in church a opportunity came by. I also applied online for jobs and ask my uncle for help in finding one and one day i kneeled down and prayed and within a few minutes to an hour i got a call from my uncle saying he got me an interview and later that day i got a call from one i applied online. The next week i prayed on my knees again to get the job that i applied online for and aboutb5 in the evening i got a call saying i got that job. Jesus has even given me thing that i didnt praying for because He knows my heart. Everytime i had fallen away (i still do) He always brings me back to Him. He has never failed me and never will. Jesus said if we ask for anything in His Name we will get it.
Is that the Bible?

Why is everyone bitching about it not being good like pure heroine. This is what artists do. She's experimenting with sounds.
tbird81 she's not just singing it, she has said that this song is about how she went through a brake up and it was better in the end

She wrote royals and everyone of that age group and everyone of that cultural fell in love with it. She writes green light and it fits so well with the same community of people. Lorde is a true growing artist that can grow with the people who listen to her. Not saying she can only cater to those people, but she surely does know how to cater to an idea, a moment, or an emotion that many people can relate to and reminisce about or feel in the moment.

People saying this isn't like Pure Heroine. Pure Heroin was almost 4 years ago. People grow/change/alter. Get over it.
Gabrielle Grangie literally people are so annoying like god forbid she make music that sounds different
Justin Rodriguez Artists change. The best artists changed their styles. Look at Nirvana. They definitely changed when they were a thing. However, as a huge fan of Lorde, I am disappointed with this track (as well as Magnets from whenever that was). I just feel like this sounds a bit too mainstream? It doesn't feel like Lorde. She can change and evolve. That's great. But, I wish I could just vibe to this, you know?
Gabrielle Grangie do people change naturally? Or do they force change for the sake of popularity?
Christian Skinner I think people change because they've changed, she's not 17 anymore. she has a different mind set and has more to experience in life which means her music is going to change. she didn't change for popularity because with pure heroin she became popular, so it's not the music. it's her as a person. also, she worked with jack (lead singer from bleachers, steel train) and they both produced this album. it's amazing that she co-produced her 2nd album.

This song is EVERYTHING!!!
I feel like people didn't actually listen to Pure Heroine. She's always been upbeat. Her best song is probably Ribs which is similar in tone to this.
TheLueii i totally agree.
TheLueii her best song is Bravado!
Ribs is not her best song but I agree with the comment
I think the lyrics to ribs are incredibly sad, but I agree she's always upbeat and takes her struggles with a positive attitude.
I think it's just the piano loop that makes this song differrent from her old songs. Other than that, I don't get how people call this mainstream
This song is weirdly aesthetic. When everything seems to be closing in and makes me feel trapped, this song liberates me; provides an escapade. Edit: Thanks for the 1k likes, my first time ever. More power to you all!
It drives me into different emotions from sad to happy to sad to angry to happy like wtf is it just me?
Well said, I feel it too
IT's definitely more than just an escape, it's an invitation of a lifestyle! Listen to the lyrics, it describes not just and idea but a story and reflection! This means Lorde has probably got the lyrics from personal experience. Experiencing someone else's thoughts or ideas is pretty cool, eh?
The song represents, to me anyway, of getting out of a relationship with a person you thought you’d be with forever at the start and the other person has moved on ( she thinks you love the beach....) and the green light is the metaphor for being able to finally move on and let go of that person you loved so much and it’s the feeling of knowing you need to let go and just waiting till you can finally give up.
Lorde is an aesthetic goddess
The day this video was released was the day I quit drugs. I’ll never forget it. This song and “Clover Cage - Learning To Love Myself” are the two songs that helped get rid of my depression. I just want to send love to everyone and I want everyone to know things will get better. We are in this together..I love you 💝
This song is like good programming code, with good programming practices and well-written design patterns as defined. beautiful work of art.
at 3:03 you can see that she's wearing adidas with her DRESS IT'S SUPER CUTE combination of a style
Alexxis Shine I like to Rock a swim suit, dress shoes and a cowboy hat.

lmao brilliant comment!
Slavery? I really think you missed that concept. What we do is work. And work pays the bills.
Legendary. I think many of us can identify with these brilliant lyrics. I got that green light and I love it! But I’m seeing them wherever I go. I’ve got my things but I can’t let go. They try hard to red light me but I find that green light and I go after it. Incredible piece of art. Lorde I love your music. You have an amazing voice and your lyrics are meaningful. I don’t like much of the music from this generation but this music I love. 😮😅
I love Royals, but this is the song of Lorde's that I always come back to.
i cant comprehend how people are saying that this sounds generic. To me, it has a clear classic Lorde vibe to it in the lyrics and in the beat of the chorus especially, and it doesnt sound like anything on the radio right now. That being said, you can tell shes been experimenting with other sounds, which i love, and i think that she made it work out amazingly. This is what quality pop sounds like.
Agreed. Just because something has a catchy, pumped-up beat doesn't make it generic! Of course Robyn is the comparison everyone is making, but I think it's a good one. Robyn is emotional, original, and doesn't get old despite seeming fairly boring upon initial inspection. Good job, Lorde!
she really danced under a red light while singing green light
thinks that lorde can do

@@STATUSTANK Because she's waiting for it, that green light, she wants it
genuinely one of the best songs ever written
Didn't fully appreciate this when it came out, heard it live in Boston, Dublin, barcalona and realised it was always might to heard live. Absolute game changer.
