Peter Hartcher on who’s next on Vladimir Putin’s hit list

When Alexei Navalny died last week in a remote Arctic penal colony, many felt that it signified the death of hope for a future, democratic Russia.
Because for nearly two decades, Navalny fought for fair elections, human rights, and freedom of speech; eventually rising to become Vladimir Putin’s most feared opponent.
Today, international and political editor Peter Hartcher, on Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, who has vowed to take over her late husband's work. And whether she will be able to unite the fractious democratic movement within Russia.

  • I recall when Navalny was coming back to Russia in Ja 2021, lots of people gathered to welcome him at the airport. Russian authorities even did not allow the plane land in the destination airport, but after a couple of hours having the plane make extra circles in the air, re-directed the plane to another airport near Moscow... That was a show!

  • Akin to a Passion Play. Navalny returned to Russia knowing it would likely lead to his death but he did it emblematically for the salvation of the country. This man goes into the pantheons of great men. And what do you know, he's a Russian.

  • I hope she does not return to Russia for the sake of her children, but also because I think she can make a bigger impact if she's alive. People who had no idea about Navalnys' mission and plight are all now interested and so this is the time for her to build her army of dissenters, within and without Russia.

  • As a Russian person I'd say that about 10-15 % of people are against Putin... maybe slightly more... I was shocked to find out that I am a minority - especially it became obvious after Navalny death. a lot of the people who are against of the present regime are in despair, in shock. I hope that Yulia Navalnaya can represent the opposition in our country.

So we're awaiting even more profound acts from Yulia, although she could just stay the widow of Russia's number 1 politician. Vladimir Kara-Murza and Ilya Yashin are next targets but there are other political prisoners who have been sent to jail being very sick and having diagnoses that do not allow a person to be in prison. But Russian authorities and court don't care to follow their own laws 😢

  • maybe i'm wrong, but the title " on who's next on Vladimir Putin's hit list" is so telling i won't watch the video. Navalany was an ULTRANATIONALIST with nazi ideas. he was directly sponsored by the Americans (The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) ) wanting to impose their vision of the world everywhere, i.e. democracy may only be American. this doesn't justify Navalany's death, but it does highlight a more complex situation than the simplistic "who's next on Putin's hit list?"
