De Niro was at his absolute best in the late 70s (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Godfather 2, The Deer Hunter) and early 80s (Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Once Upon a Time In America). With a few notable exceptions - Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino - his work went stedily downhill. Certainly in the 2000s.

I had a friend who could hold your attention for an hour just telling you a story, it'd be so detailed that you could picture it in your head, and it wasn't like it was useless details, they somehow put you right in the story. • I wonder how much dust scripts collect on sets of Scorsese movies. This is almost all improv. There's no way DeNiro was deriving this from a script. He was just being one of the hoods he grew up around.

  • I have a friend that I grew up with that is just like Johnny Boy. I used to get into conversations like this one with him all the time since he was my best friend. Keitel does a great job going along listening to him. I think Keitel trumped DeNiro in this movie. I know aot of people are going to disagree but I always felt that way. Bottom line: they are both great. PS: I saw this movie when it came out. My friends mother took us and we were like 12 years old. Pretty hip when I think back on it.

    • Well, if u thibnk so then you are completely wrong. Wateva, de niro wasn't in the movie as much as Keitel was.

  • De Niro is not a real street guy, he's from Greenwich Village , but growing up he hung out in 🇮🇹little Italy 🇮🇹with👊 street guys,👊🇮🇹 he's emulating them, some of the best actors in history couldn't do what he did there, 1 of the best U.S.A. ever produced period.

  • "Q: I got the feeling of improvisation from Mean Streets also. MS: Yes, there's some improvisation there. Of course the scene where Bob De Niro and Harvey Keitel are in the back room arguing over money was totally improvised."

  • The word underrated is severely overused, but this movie is criminally underrated. Its a work of art. The acting and dialogue is a excellent as you're likely to see..
