I grew up calling them by both names. It may be a mid-Western thing, but it was not strange for us to use multiple accepted terminology for whatever. We would say soda, pop, soda pop, soft drinks, carbonated drinks, or just the name of the drink. So, if someone said string beans or green beans, no one blinked an eye.
