The G.O.A.T Series - Episode 3
The debate over the greatest 10,000 meter runner is mostly split between two athletes: Haile Gebrselassie & Kenenisa Bekele. Although both have made enormous improvements in the progression of 10k running, only one can be victorious. Stay tuned to see which race we selected as the moment Gebrselassie became the one true G.O.A.T

  • To answer the question at 7:06 (why Kemboi isn't U20 word record holder): yes, Kemboi was 19, but in athletics all that counts is the year that one is born. That means that that if one athlete is born 01.01. and the second one is born 31.12. in the same year, IAAF treats theme as the same age. So when looking at the records, you just look at the year of the race and then subtract the year when athlete was born (so in this case 2003 - 1983 = 20 -> not U20).

    @Mapovsic@Mapovsic3 жыл бұрын
    • Isn't that incredibly unfair towards anyone born at the end of the year?

      @TheToyotaMann@TheToyotaMann3 жыл бұрын
    • @@Lucas__C Yes. Even worse thing is that youth world championship is hold only every second year, so if one is born in odd year (for example 2003) in December, one can compete against almost 2 years older athletes (that is a big difference when one is 16 or 17, which is eligable age for this competition). And in the next event, one cannot compete, because he is to old (even thought, in reality, one is not yet 18).

  • I think I have your answer. You see the performance only counts as a U20 record if that athlete is not turning 20 that year. Yes Kemboi ran that time when was 19, but he was turning 20 later that same year while Samuel was turning 19 the year he ran that race. Another example is when Noah Lyles ran 19.90 in 2017 at 19 years of age. If he had turned 19 that year it would've broken Bolt's 19.93, but Noah was turning 20 that season. A lot of athletes have run fast as teenagers, but the records weren't U20 records because they turned 20 that season. More examples: Yohan Blake ran 19.78 at 19 years in 2010 Adam Gemili ran 19.93 in 2013 at 19 years in 2013 Trayvon Bromell ran 9.84 at 19 years in 2015 All of them turned 20 after these races. There's a lot more of course. I hope this helps you understand why the record doesn't belong to Kemboi. Unfortunately I don't have the exact link I learnt all this from, because I got this year's ago, but you should be able to find it at the official World Athletics website.

  • To answer the question as to why Kemboi does not hold the under 20 WR, its because the U20 age category means that an athlete cannot turn 20 in the same year. For example an under 20 athlete competing in 2020 would have to be born in either the year 2001 or 2002. An athlete born in the year 2000 turns 20 in the same year, so is classed as a senior athlete rather than an under 20, even if they don’t turn 20 until December 31st of that year. Kemboi was born in November 1983 and ran his 26:30 in September 2003. So while he was 19 at the time of the race because he turned 20 later that year he is not classed as an under 20 athlete. Wanjiru on the other hand was born in November 1986 and ran his 26:41 in September 2005 which is the same year he turned 19 thus qualifying as an under 20 athlete. Unfortunately these age categories give athletes who are born late in the year a slight disadvantage over those born earlier in the year. Hope this helps.

  • I would pick bekele as the goat of the 10 000m When bekele was at his best, no one could compete with him. He had a better kick than haile, even after fast races (2004 / 2009 for exemple). He holds the world record and his top 10 times are slightly faster than haile, and 4 of them are under 26:30. Overall bekele was really the most dominant athlete in the 10 000m, almost always winning by a huge margin and no one was even close. Even tho his dominance lasted 6 years because he struggled with injuries. But huge respect to haile for his long dominance and very long career.

  • I think that honorable mentions at th very least have to go to the two trailblazers who showed what was possible and got the ball rolling in the 10,000m: Paavo Nurmi and Emil Zatopek. Both had training regimes that many thought were beyond the pale, but they proved themselves and often ran from the front. Nurmi never lost at 10,000m, and was so dominant that he ran with stopwatch in hand as his main competitor. Zatopek showed that surges could be an effective strategy, even though it is mostly associated with Kuts. Sadly, after the dominance of Haile and Bekele, we are going back to a world of runners trotting along until they make their kicks at the end. Who will be the great front runner willing to put it on the line and lead us out of the darkness?

  • Nicholas Kemboi, at a young 19 years of age, came out of nowhere to challenge one of the greatest 10K runners... Not only does he run the 8th fastest 10K of all time, but, as you said, he manages to shave 2 minutes off of his PR. How did that happen, and more importantly, what happened to the future of this promising athlete? It seems strange that he was able to improve upon his former time by a staggering 2 min., but was never able to improve upon the incredible time he managed to set during this race with Haile. Any thoughts?

  • The Greatest 10,000 runner of all time?...NO, he is simply THE GREATEST AT ANY DISTANCE EVENT EVER! I simply DO NOT CARE that his records have since been eclipsed. He has set and held, and mostly reset, so many of the records, and by margins that are too big to even comprehend in some cases; Lowering the WR in the 5,000 by ALMOST 11 SECONDS IN 1995!?! NO ONE DOES THIS!!! EVERY distance from the 5 to the Marathon has been with his name to it at one time or another, and was even the World Indoor Champion at 1,500 and 3,000 in 1999, as well as the 2,000m WR indoors. WHO can even claim to hold this man's jockstrap?

  • He may have been turning 20 in that calendar year. I’m not sure if it works this way on the world level, but in the US, if you are 19 on the day of the race and 20 by December 31st of that year, you cannot compete in U20.
