Welcome to a new series on my channel. In this series I will be training a German Shepherd Dog named Harley to be a service dog.
In episode one I will be teaching Harley the first ten steps that I follow when training a service dog. These steps do not include socializing or confidence building. These steps are for obedience, as it's important for a service dog to always be obedient.

Is there a glitch or is there something else I need to do prior to clicking the join button? Thanks

  • I love everything about Brandon McMillan's mission, show, and now his book! kzhead.infoUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 It couldn't have been released at a better time, as we just got a second dog and the only command she knew was "sit" which surprised me until I read about that in his book. I've had to modify a little bit, as it's too snowy to train outside and my big service animal wants to be right there, but he's actually been a help, as he obeys every command and then I get the new dog to do it, right beside him. I've trained a lot of dogs over the course of my lifetime, so some of this wasn't new but there were lots of new ideas and twists to what I've always done. For instance, I've never used leashes except when training to heel. I may do more of that, though I pick kinda chill animals who I seem to have some communication with, to start, and I haven't needed them, to date. The new dog may change that - though she's just getting over an upset stomach so we had to take a training recess for a few days. She got "down" and "stay" without them, though, so we'll see. Great to have the tools you need, if and when you need them!

  • He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book kzhead.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

  • Awesome training 👍 I grew up with at least three dogs in the household and I was the designated trainer throughout my life owning in training so many of my own family dogs. My last dog which was a labrador was my masterpiece! he went surfing with me, snow skiing with me, hiking, bouldering, high diving and fishing! I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few things because I ran out of things to teach this dog! He could identify 10 different toys and pick out the one I asked for on demand, get food and drink out of the refrigerator and close the door. He would open the front door of the house on demand when my friends came over and then I would ask him to go get them beers out of the refrigerator. He would go and get a beer for myself and my friends! It was a riot my friends couldn't believe it!!! There's just so much more I did with my dog he went everywhere with me. was always a topic of conversation and people were always amazed at the things he would do and how he would pretty much read my mind. we began new routines on different scenarios all the time with high-fives and jumping into my arms on command and he was a 70 lb dog! Fortunately I'm big enough to handle catching him 😁🐶 I digressto watching how you train this dog and your methodology, smart. anyhow I'm looking to get my next dog and doing a bunch of research on the types of dogs that I like and what I will be doing with him or her. I'm also a traumatic brain injury survivor so actually I'm thinking to experiment with training my next dog to really serve traumatic brain injury survivors like. My last Labrador was the best gift that I was given the year after I had a traumatic brain injury. He was a huge factor in my healing and really connected in a way that I had never been connected to an animal before. He was my Shadow 🐶 he he lived a long and healthy life, 15yrs!!

  • I have sifted through a lot of dog trainers and techniques through my lifetime of dog ownership. Nate’s system works better than any of them! Get your steps and timing down and you will have success. I’m so thankful to Nate for his dedication and willingness to share so much content that actually works. I had a zoom private lesson with him. I highly suggest you do this because even when you think you are doing it right, there is probably an important nuance you have missed. Just one lesson rocketed me and puppy to the next level. My puppy, Monty, is four months old and now does all of these commands, (and more) in the video! I have never before had such success training a dog. Thanks Nate! (Susan Thompson)

I've had her for 1 month and really just spent that time bonding as she's never been in a house and had no idea how to be a puppy. We've mastered potty training and we've started with luring then sitting. I'm training her myself for my service dog with plans to take her to college with me. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Her task that's going to be trained is pressure therapy when my anxiety kicks up!

  • I must say that being a grad student and with the lockdown I made the decision to get a pup a few months and videos like yours are so helpful. Ive never realized how much of training my pup would actually be training myself and staying disciplined. Additionally, I was looking for companionship which I found plus more. While training I feel like our bond and love for each other strengthens and honestly at the end of the day thats what everyone wants- the idea of connecting with another. When she does learn commands and listens to me it is probably more rewarding to me than her haha! You may say that you help people train their dogs, but a mentality like yours with the energy you have in your videos is so infectious that I can see this passion spill into other areas of my life as I continue to grow as a person! Thank you so much!

    • Thanks Jessica! When I first start a dog in service dog training, I start with obedience, socializing, and confidence building. I believe obedience is one of the most important things a service dog needs to be good at in all locations and with any type of distraction. With that being said, I've only been working obedience with Harley the past few months. However, she is getting close to starting more of the service dog tasks. I would say that episode 2 will probably be going up in the next two weeks or so. :)

We have a new Czech imported working bloodline German Shepherd puppy that has more energy than any German Shepherd I've had before and I have been at a loss of how to keep her challenged and busy and worn out! We've done the basic commands; sit, down, stay, drop it, leave it, but you have me a good bit more here to work on and hopefully there are additional episodes I will be looking for! Cheyenne and I thank you! I will be so proud to take her out in public and show off her skills!

  • This is so good! I trained dogs with an animal rescue many years ago- a lot of people trained differently, so I developed a mashup style training that was a work in progress for a long time and overtime I simplified it greatly. I really love your style, and I think it's perfect- it would be easy to implement even with a low perseverance dog. Really wonderful stuff and I am thankful that you've shared it. Ive got an 8 week old Aussie Shepherd thats going to be my service dog for a chronic health condition that can seriously limit my mobility and cognitive ability during a flare, not unlike MS. Whats great about the way you enforce behaviors is they are physically easy on the trainer, so I should be a le to train her on even terrible days. So excited! Thank you!

Along with your dog doing the behavior correctly, you still demonstrate what to do if the dog does the behavior differently. Major props!

We all adored that dog...but he passed away recently. I'm intending to choose a shelter dog in July or somewhere thereabouts, so I'm binging on training videos to improve my teaching techniques.

    • I love that you taught your dog the command "Excuse me, please", to move out of the way. Reminds me of a dog that I trained to bow on command. The command was "say thank you" so when someone would say that I had a nice dog. I would tell my dog 'Say thank you" and he would bow. I always like unique commands like that, so thank you for sharing that with me. • Lovely video. I have a 15 weeks old Australian Shepherd boy. He's currently in training by myself (I do have some experience) and we're also getting an official trainer so that he can get a certificate later. He already knows the commands to sit, down, up, and also paw because I was curious how long it would take him to figure it out (5 minutes.. he's smart, hell). We've already been training in public places too like stores, train stations and farms. He's very calm and ignores any other animal, even dogs, except for when he's off the leash then he's free to play of course. He is going to be a PTSS service dog and when he's got all the basics he's going to learn things as crowd control and alerting and way more. Oh he already knows the commands to jump against me (hug) and lay down on my lap. For anyone reading this and thinks, oh, Australian Shepherds, sounds like they're well at the task. Don't get a shepherd if you don't know what you're working with! I've trained with this breed a lot before. They need a lot of physical and mental challenges, they need to work a lot, do a lot, and if you don't do this correctly... You have a dog that can become destructive or even aggressive.

  • I have a service dog I trained myself. A male doberman. I get asked about training a service dog by many people because he is so highly trained (CDX, RAE, CGCA) passes through airport security metal detectors totally unteathered from a sit stay while I go through X-Ray. Most people don't understand to qualify as a service dog the handler must qualify under ADA being deprived of mobility or loss of one of the 5 senses. The dog must be nonreactive to people and other dogs and be trained to compensate for the disability. A PTSD dog must do all of the same and the handler needs to provide documentation from a mental health professional a dog is necessary. I detest people who abuse the Service Dog status with untrained dogs by slapping a mail order vest on their pet. Obedience 1st!!! ADA training 2nd.

  • Hello Nate, first and foremost, “*THANK YOU”. The training of my 12week now, Sheepadoodle Service Dog, is going mind blowing well!!! I credit this to your awesome tutorial! How invaluable this has been. We (my husband Roxy) went on another obedience training walk. Started off Roxy kept trying to walk ahead, thanks to my professional dog trainers I immediately recognized it to be pent up energy. We returned home and she proved me right. My husband was amazed. Roxy got into the yard and started literally racing in circles around the yard. Once she had that out of her system, we started out again, a totally different dog. She happily heeled with a little prodding. I walked about 20’ had her “sit stay”. We would start again. Beautiful! Then we progressed to my husband walking way ahead. I released her and my husband called her. She ran directly to him he treated her and she came back to me. Again My Husband was very impressed. You truly have to see this to believe it.
