  • That's the best reveal in the history of the world. We were there summer of 2017. When the screen went translucent and I could see that Atlantis was RIGHT THERE, it literally brought me to tears. It's such a wonderful tribute to this incredible spacecraft.

  • We took HMS Vanguard (UK submarine) over to Kings Bay so we had to go and see the space centre. I've loved space all my life. Drew pictures of the shuttle for as far back as I could pick a pencil up. This was a once in a lifetime trip for me. Watched the presentation and video in the hall...then Atlantis appeared. Wow, what an amazing graphic.......oh!! Then the screen went up and there was Atlantis...and well...I aint too proud to say this....but I cried my f*ckin eyes out.

    • When you leave the Visitors Center, two lanes turn left towards Orlando while one turns right into the Space Center. Disney calls itself "the place where dreams come true" . For most people, the left turn will do. For us, the right turn takes us to the place where OUR dreams come true.

Like a swan or a penguin but with more stories & adventures that any bird you know. I saw her rise from the beach on her maiden flight but I never wanted to see her lay down. Thanks for a great lifetime. I miss you..

Apollo was amazing but for some reason the Atlantis I really had to try to hold back the tears during the reveal. Even watching the video back makes me want to cry. Its just so moving! I wasn't prepared for it, and even now I am prepared I am still moved. Fantastic.

    • The problem with Saturn V is it's too big for a dramatic reveal like this. I like seeing the Shuttle Boosters over the horizon as the first thing you see when you start getting close, but if they wanted a truly dramatic reveal for the Saturn V, they would have to assemble that thing upright and make it the first thing you see from 2 miles away over the Horizon. Saturn is so gigantic it boggles the mind when you stand under it. And looking at the first stage tank and engines is incredible as well when you think about how much fuel that thing used as fast as it did. They just rode a gigantic controlled explosion. Theres no other way to describe what was going on when that thing took off. And the SLS crew and heavy cargo blocks are going to be even bigger. But their explosions have a bit more finesse.

  • Shane - Just returned from four-days at KSC. Did the Atlantis reveal twice, and it brought tears to my ears both times. The displays of Discovery at Udvar-Hazy and Endeavour at the California Science Center pale in comparison to this masterstroke of public engagement. Thanks for posting. I feel like I'm right back there again.

    @1955SteveJ@1955SteveJ7 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for your feedback Steven - glad you liked it. Its been a few years now since I last visited KSC - in fact, this video was taken during my last visit in 2013 - they did a superb job with the Atlantis presentation and I definitely want to go back in the next year or two - maybe get to see a Space X or SLS launch - I was incredibly fortunate to witness one of the last launches of Atlantis in person back in 2008 before they retired the Shuttle fleet, so it was extra special to get to see Atlantis up close in the exhibit. In the meantime I've also managed to meet some Shuttle and Apollo-era astronauts in person, including Buzz Aldrin (amazing to think that he is one of the few people to have walked on the surface of the moon and returned to earth!). Will be interesting to see if we make it to Mars in my lifetime...!

      @Shane-Kelly@Shane-Kelly7 жыл бұрын
    • I understand, completely. This recent trip was my 12th visit to KSC, starting with the first time in 1970. We were on the NASA Causeway West when Columbia took flight for STS-1 in 1981, and went back to see STS-4 in 1982. After that, I was not back for a launch until STS-133 in February of 2011. My 2012 trip was specially to do the then "Limited time tours" of the VAB and Firing Room 4. I'm glad I did those, as they are not available now. However, this was my first visit to Atlantis' home, as the building was still being built in 2012. The pending CSC-Endeavour "stack" exhibit might not have the drama of the Atlantis reveal, but there's something about walking up to a full Shuttle Stack that stirs the soul... I'm going back there for that, when it opens, too. Thanks again.

      @1955SteveJ@1955SteveJ7 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah - I was lucky enough to get inside the VAB and stand next to one of the launch pads (think it was 39B) - as you say, these tours are no longer available as they prepare for the SLS - another item ticked off the bucket list for sure!

      @Shane-Kelly@Shane-Kelly7 жыл бұрын
    • September next year is gonna be a great time to visit. Just got back myself and unfortunately I planned it spur of the moment and only got to stay 5 hours or so. I could spend the full the day and then some again when I go back, but my main goal is to get there and go to the first launch of the SLS. And after that the first mission to set boots on Mars again. Lucky I have family in Port St. Lucie. I think I'm gonna make going to launches my thing.

      @svenhoek8635@svenhoek86357 жыл бұрын
    • Would love to see the first launch of the SLS myself - however I'm guessing they'll be extra cautious for the first few launch attempts and scrub launches if everything is not perfect (weather, recovery zone etc) - I wish I lived closer to Cape Canaveral so that I could witness launches on a regular basis - however, since I'm based in Ireland it takes a certain amount of planning and good luck to visit KSC at the right time and have a launch go as scheduled. That said, I've visited four times now and witnessed 3 launches (STS-122, MAVEN launched atop a Falcon V, and a government based satellite launch) - so thats a pretty good strike rate :)

  • Was there at KSC when they moved Atlantis down the road to the visitors center before this exhibit was fully built (they gave out commemorative coins when we entered) and it was a great photo op as well. Couple years later I came down to Florida again to see her but this reveal was more than I expected and is something I will never forget. Been back 3 times. If you ever go to KSC take the Special Access bus tour. They get you closer to a lot of stuff and you get off the bus a few times. It's another 25 bucks or so but well worth it! Thanks NASA for not just being amazing with science, our advancement and technology but with your generosity towards visitors too!!

    • Thanks. Personally I was a little disappointed when I reviewed the video back - although the quality is fine, since I'm from Europe my camera settings default to PAL (50fps) whilst the presentation was presumably recorded in NTSC (60fps) hence the shimmering and banding that can be seen in the video (its more pronounced in some areas than others). If I get a chance to go back I'll definitely remember to record in NTSC :)

    • Thanks a lot - and yeah, you're right - the 'reveal' is very well done. I was visiting KSC on a day when there was a rocket launch (which I was also fortunate to witness) so there was a pretty decent crowd - and the reaction when Atlantis was finally revealed is great - even though people know what they're going to see. Coincidentally, the one and only shuttle launch I was fortunate enough to see in person also happened to be Atlantis! From a technical perspective, my only issue is that I captured the video using a european (PAL - 50hz) camcorder - hence the flickering/banding because it was shot in 60hz NTSC - if only I'd realised beforehand I could've changed the settings. But its still pretty watchable.... Thanks again - glad you liked the video and took the time to comment.

When I saw this show, and Atlantis was revealed, if you had had your eyes closed, you would think you’d be hearing the crowd scream for the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show or cheer at seeing the real Starship Enterprise and Captain Kirk show up at Comic Con. I felt no different, other than hyperventilate and not be able to walk for 5 minutes (in a good way). 😁 🚀 👍

  • I saw Discovery at the Smithsonian, but this looks like a much cooler exhibit. I might need to take a trip here :)

  • That moment when you realise it's not part of the movie, it's the real shuttle . . that there is magic.

  • Going there tomorrow, the reveal made Mommy feel emotional, but in a good way. Going there after I need a break from too much time at Planet Play, and then we will try to go to Heroes and Legends, I'm super excited to do the ISS and watch the movie and reveal of Space Shuttle Atlantis there tomorrow!

  • I went there earlier this year, and the background music (the song that plays as the veil of atlantis is lifted) is striking to me. Can someone please tell me what it is called? That would be much appreciated.

    • +Cheezy Cheezemister The media presentation was created by Mousetrappe (www.mousetrappe.com) and the audio was designed for them by Jon Baker Productions (jonbakerproductions.com/2013/06/nasa-shuttle-atlantis-exhibit-kennedy-space-center/)

  • I was able to view the launch for Atlantis' final run, but this exhibit is on my bucket list next Fla trip...(maybe Artemis, or sooner!) Question: did Atlantis have two manipulator arms all along (?) or was that somehow added later for the display?🇺🇸🙂

  • Beautiful ship and display and at its proper home location as it should be. I wish endeavor or discovery would be displayed at mission control in Houston’s LB Johnson Space Center instead of Virginia or California.
