A controversial decision by leaders at the University of Southern California relates to the debate raging on many U.S. campuses over the war in Gaza. The school says it's canceling a planned graduation speech by its valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, due to safety concerns. This follows the online response to a pro-Palestinian link that Tabassum posted on her Instagram account.

We certainly should. “We cannot accept it....We will not allow anyone to do this by word or deed.” -Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, September 2012, addressing the UN General Assembly about the little movie Innocence of Muslims "The Prophet is avenged!" -one of the gunmen immediately after they killed eleven staffers at Paris’s Charlie Hebdo in January 2015 “NAIROBI, Kenya (Morning Star News) - Islamists upset by a Christian-Muslim debate are suspected in the killing of a long-time evangelist in eastern Uganda....The mutilated body of Samson Nfunyeku was found close to his home in Kalampete village, Kibuku District early on Sept. 23, after the latest in a series of organized debates with Islamic scholars...ended prematurely due to flaring tempers the previous night. He was 59....At a previous debate...Muslim leaders had threatened him and warned him to hold no more debates, a source said.” -a story filed on October 15, 2015 On July 26, 2016, an 85-year-old priest was beheaded while saying Mass in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, France. An "Allāhu akbar" shootout with police followed. And that is just the tip of the tip of the iceberg.

Unlike a wedding where you choose to marry another person who you may or may not stay married to, we make a big deal out of the ceremony, but a degree you have worked so very hard for and that no way can take it from you, it's not that big a deal? No, it's a huge deal. And I'm an academic who has been to dozens of graduation ceremonies. I did walk for my Bachelor's and PhD and those are precious memories. I can't imagine choosing to forgot such an important event because of the speaker being replaced. It isn't making a statement,it's a person losing out on a ceremony that they and the family and friends who supported them are looking forward to. It is culmination of their hard work.

  • Great! The last thing one needs is someone with a specific view speaking at a public gathering potentially causing concerns. You really have to be the one who has a great msg for the graduates but at a neutral position. If one spills out their personal view of something, there’s always going to be a clash. Great job getting her outta there.

  • Isnt it more concerning for the university that simply SHARING a post with a link to OTHER organizations elicits anger from very specific small groups of people. Sounds like it was never a problem on ber end to begin with.

Also I support this woman's right to free speech, however, just like any other person who is outspoken about any controversial issu, they should not be talking about those subjects in a commencement speech or an awards show unrelated to the issue. The university has legitimate concerns about her safety and the safety of the other students and audience due to this volatile issue.
