Endorsing a call for “the complete abolishment” of Israel is highly disturbing, and it is no more acceptable than if that country were China, India, or Ukraine. Likewise, the complete rejection of the right of self-determination of the Jewish people, and their connection to their indigenous homeland, is hardly reflective of progressive values, and marginalizes the Jewish community instead of fostering inclusiveness. If I was a student graduating with my Bachelor's or doctorate I would want to walk across the stage. It's a big deal and you work your tail off for it. Unlike a wedding where you choose to marry another person who you may or may not stay married to, we make a big deal out of the ceremony, but a degree you have worked so very hard for and that no way can take it from you, it's not that big a deal? No, it's a huge deal. And I'm an academic who has been to dozens of graduation ceremonies. I did walk for my Bachelor's and PhD and those are precious memories. I can't imagine choosing to forgot such an important event because of the speaker being replaced. It isn't making a statement,it's a person losing out on a ceremony that they and the family and friends who supported them are looking forward to. It is culmination of their hard work.
Let people say what they need to say, on both sides. Be honest, be open, be respectable, learn from each other.

In a interview on CNN, she claimed that she hadn't even written her speech yet and wasn't going to mention Gaza. So they didn't cancel her for anything she was actively planning to say, but because of the possibility that she potentially might have brought it up.
I am highly disheartened by USC's decision to cancel a speech without even knowing its content. Couldn't they have requested a copy of the speech beforehand to avoid such a humiliating action?
They could have easily protected her or could have pre-recorded her speech and broadcast it during the ceremony. Certainly every institution doesn’t pretend to agree with the commentary of every commencement speech. The United States and institutions of higher learning are places where passionate and informed opinions and discourse matter- for all people.

USC had 140 students who had the same GPA that applied to be valedictorian….USC picked her, looks like they did not vet her enough. She is not the only top student. This is not high school, more than one student can get 4.0 at USC.

I am a graduate student in Japan, studying Frankfurt school, especially Walter Benjamin. Latest academism and education are focusing on issues of human rights and post-colonialism. I am in solidarity with students who stand up and speak out for peace, justice and human rights, like her.
Free speech is perfectly fine, but there needs to be limits with the topic, reasoning and timing where it might cross the line.

The Gaza strip under Hamas is a different story. It's still criminalized there. It depends on where you are in Palestine, but regardless, it's still pretty taboo. LGBTQIA topics are very much taboo in the Bible belt of America as well. Transgender individuals have faced much discrimination lately both legally and socially. Your use of LOL isn't appreciated. I believe it is time to halt this practice of having the students speak at graduation. It used to be an opportunity for some uplifting talk about graduation and the hopes and success for the future, Now it is just an opportunity to spout out mostly leftist talking points.

Great! The last thing one needs is someone with a specific view speaking at a public gathering potentially causing concerns. You really have to be the one who has a great msg for the graduates but at a neutral position. If one spills out their personal view of something, there’s always going to be a clash. A valedictorian is not selected. It's the student with the highest grades graduating that year.

Good for the school exercising their right as a private institution. No student is entitled to give a speech at graduation - it seems like they didn't want to risk it, and that was totally their judgment call.
Student speeches at graduation should be cancelled permanently.

Also I support this woman's right to free speech, however, just like any other person who is outspoken about any controversial issu, they should not be talking about those subjects in a commencement speech or an awards show unrelated to the issue. The university has legitimate concerns about her safety and the safety of the other students and audience due to this volatile issue.
