In 2021 there’s no bigger car brand in the world than Tesla!
However, there’s another electric car manufacturer hot on its heels, and it may have the potential to overtake Tesla by the end of the year!
Founded in 2014, NIO has become seriously popular in a short space of time. It’s already released 5 models (averaging one every 18 months), and has sold over 50,000 cars in China! Sure, it’s not as many as Tesla on a global scale, but at the rate it’s producing new models, you have to admit there's some serious potential here!
Not only that, but it has a trick up its sleeve which can see its cars recharge to 100% in just TEN minutes! Want to find out what it is? You’ll have to keep watching!

Actually: I was in an internship at Audi several years ago and I proposed to make batteries swappable. They laughed at me HAHAHA. Had other ideas as well which were talked down by some of them. I should go to China I think.
Battery swap tech is amazing! A new charged battery in 5 minutes.
when they laugh its usually a sign its a really good idea in the FUTURE. ive owned a tesla m3 before and range and charging is a major issue
It's a superb short term idea which is why it's a bad idea. I've got a 2016 leaf and my typical rapid charge is 5 mins as I usually only need the additional 15 miles of range
I said that years ago when Teslas first came to Australia. I even said if they rent out batteries, it'll decrease the cost of the car too. But, they're good ideas that fell on ears that can't do anything with those ideas.
Renault have tried it, and they also tried battery leasing. People didn't like either of them. And guess what. NIO is trying it again. People won't accept it, and certainly not the battery leasing. People hated that with renault.
Just finished my intern job at NIO, if we don't look at the products that tesla n neo made, the customer services before and after u bought nio is way better tbh. Im not a big electric car fans but the experience that work in NIO actually surprised me. A lady bought a ES8 from us n drove back to her city she found that she cant actually charge her car on her parking space as the apartment manager refused to let her to set up a charger at her parking space, then she called us n asked our colleague, the NIO dealer decided to give her free batteries swap 4 times per week. When Tesla's battery goes bad, it would cost the owner $20k USD to have them repaired/replaced. When the Nio's battery goes bad, the owner simply goes to a swapping station and get a new one at no cost. Long-term resale value of Tesla goes to sh!tz after its warranty expires, mainly because of battery degradation. With Nio, the new 2nd-hand owner could simply just get a new battery at no extra cost.
2:09 I wish we could go back to the days of removable batteries in phones. It would be so nice to just pop in a fresh battery whenever you need one.
Hi Alexander, for mobile phones, it'll be tricky making that trip back in time. There is a lot of giveaways for such a move. Say; Waterproofing, Dust proofing, sales volumes for new phones, since every year a flagship piece is released by the manufacturers. For, Electric cars, this move by NIO has surely caused chills for all competitors in the electric car manufacturing business
@@paulsagyiri8151 Not really as battery swapping has been tried already, and failed. Was tried by Tesla, abandoned due to lack of interest. Was tried in Israel, went bust. Once you get 500 miles of range, what is the point of swapping the battery? That is enough to commute for over 3 weeks in the USA, a month in Europe without charging the car. Even a road trip in the USA, it would be enough for 5 to 6 hours of driving. After that much driving, most people would want to stop for food and restrooms, and the 30 to 40 minutes after it takes to fast charge a car wouldn't be much of a time penalty.
@@redbaron6805 but you don't have to swop it in the Nio. You can just charge as normal like a Tesla.
@@andrewbennett137 I think you are missing the point a bit. With an EV with 250 miles of range and long charging times, you could make a case for battery swapping, a weak case, but at least a case for it. With the new EV's having 500 miles of range and being able to fast charge in about 20 minutes, battery swapping makes very little sense. It also makes far less sense in the USA where a lot of people have homes with garages and driveways where you can charge your car at home. Keep in mind for battery swapping stations to make financial sense, they have to have quite a few cars doing swaps. The interest in this has never been really demonstrated on a large scale, and even NIO has a small fraction of the number of battery swapping stations compared to Tesla Superchargers even in China. So, the math on this really doesn't add up. NIO will never recover the capital and running costs of the swapping so the odds of this ever taking off are rather slim. It doesn't matter if it takes 10 minutes to swap the battery if it takes you a 2 hour round trip to get to the swapping station.
@@redbaron6805 I don’t mind the range. What I do mind is the charging time. For now I’ll just stick with a gas car

Been wondering for years when someone would come out with a quick swap battery concept.
Yup, its a good idea
It's been done several times before (BetterPlace is probably the most famous example). Nio's the first to make a success of it, which I think has surprised everyone. However - it does require standardised battery packs; I don't think you'll ever see swap stations capable of serving every car brand.
@@nickporter4279 eventually in about 10 to 15 years the car manufacturers will probably be forced to use standardised packs
Swapping batteries is not a good idea, the battery is the most expensive part out of every electric car and in order to provide such a service you would need more batteries than cars. Also, if you look at the progress being made on battery cell technology, today’s batteries will probably be obsolete in 2-3 years so it is definitely not a smart move to produce too many of them.
Renault actually had that idea 10 years ago and did it with the Fluence ZE, but the company Better Playce who swaped the batteries went bankrupt because the demand wasn’t there back then
Battery swap sounds like a great idea! Presumably the swap facilities will have minimum performance standards for the batteries they swap, so old batteries with limited capacity will be removed from circulation and your car always has a decent battery in it. What’s not to like?
The pollution? That's what's not to like.
@@genogeno7289 Which pollution?
@@genogeno7289 what pollution ? You can recycle the removed battery
How can the battery swap station determine the SOH if they can't do a full discharge and charge inside there? To test a battery you really have to do a full drain. And a full charge. Count the current going trough the full cycle. And determine the difference between the original Ah and the current one. This process is build in the "test" part in a Tesla and it will drain a full charge and waste a full charge or more to nothing.

Fascinating video about a brand I think we'll hear much about over the next few years. The design of their vehicles is, to my eye, very appealing ...... I particularly like the ET7 model. The battery swapping idea is a stroke of genius and could be a real game changer. At the moment they're clearly focussed on models to rival Tesla but I think it's very likely they will enlarge their range to include smaller, more affordable models that will be very appealing to mass markets around the world ............ at prices that Tesla and European manufacturers won't be able to match, let alone beat. They, like other Chinese EV manufacturers, have an advantage over established motor manufacturers. They aren't bogged down by the: "we've always done things this way" thinking and started from a clean slate. They have clearly learned very quickly and the speed with which they've already launched several models is a clear sign of their capabilities. Would I buy one? Yes I think I would if the package met my needs and was competitively priced. Let's face it, how many things do any of us buy nowadays that isn't already made in China?

NIO is absolutely beautiful
you are right much better than a bland tesla models
This idea is so much model specific. Like in a charging station, you can charge literally any eV, same in fuel stations where you can fill like any ic engine car. But this, as far i could sense, can only be implemented in a model and make specific manner. This concept is good tho, it needs more levels of developments.
well it might be done in similar way as CCS/Type2 standard was done. All cars in some common market (UE , China , NAFTA) needs to support common format of battery for swapping
Very very very insightful.... Appreciate the info Mat 👊🏾
NIO just announced their battery swap station version 2.0 will start running in Q2, cutting swap time from 6 mins to under 3 mins.
Battery swap stations are a logistical nightmare. If you actually research it you will find out why Tesla decided to scrap the idea.
@@Asianofawesomeness China has the largest population and it seems like these swap stations work for them.
@@Alex_Fung True. Maybe if the demand is high enough it could work. But when their is no demand it will be too expensive even for people that buy luxury electric vehicles. And by the time their is enough demand electric vehicle chargers will be everywhere and will have a full day range. So if the range of an electric vehicle is enough to last you an entire day with out recharging then when ever you go to sleep whether or not that's an apartment building, motel or hotel you can charge it too 100% overnight. Because of this it wouldn't make sense
@@Alex_Fung they're making it almost like the Apple sales style; everything is optional. The cost is 143/swap after your first 6/month. You save 10k in the short run but in the long run it could add up. The potential for battery install mishaps is increased. Additionally, Nio offers free charging (will be phased out) which makes this almost obsolete when people decide that the time value doesn't outweigh the monetary value.
@@Asianofawesomeness they are generating revenues from their battery “service” which makes them stand out to all of their competitors. No other EV companies have this type of business model which makes Nio even more attractive. They are doing the same thing as Amazon did. They are charging for service rather than the product itself. Like it or not they are going to dominate the EV market globally along with Tesla at this rate of expansion.

The only thing that turned me off from electric cars was the charging time, now for the first time I believed in the potential of electric cars.
Remember the 1st EVER CAR WAS AN ELECTRIC but because of the technology back then wasn't good because its only lead acid battery which is not really good that is why Merecedes favors in ICE
The battery swap is a gimmick that is not scalable. Their batteries take about an hour to charge (the biggest ones) and so if you want to have 5 minute swap at full operational capacity of a changing station you need 12 of those for every changing stall. If you throw different sizes into the mix, you need multiples of those. Imagine how expensive those stations will be. Also if you charge at home most of the time, the swappable battery only adds cost, weight and space. Charging gets faster and faster to the point it will soon won't matter that much and for those charging at home it's actually more convenient than having a gas car, because you don't have to go to the gas station at all and you start your day with a fresh charge every day.
@@zbyszanna I am worrying about the electric shock bcuz of that electric swap batteries that thing is not a future proof. There could be something else is needed for ev to work efficiently.
@@zbyszanna Until they standardise the batteries and charging electric cars won’t be successful.
@UCORoHxSzsYbKmqE2xQKkVzA yup that battery swap idea is not gonna work for sure.. There could be a other sources of energy for EV to recharge itself.
I think it's a great development for the race to full electric cars. It's hard to tell how exactly the end-picture will look but different approaches to a problem will definitely add to more innovations te gain market share (including Tesla which will not stand by idle).

Got one of them Nio battery swap station here right next to the building that I’m working in, I’m from Shenzhen btw. The only downside is that the station wasn’t designed like a drive-through restaurant therefore all the vehicles have to go in and out through the same spot, and it is really messing up the surrounding traffic. But still I’m really looking forward to to the future of Nio.
If u remember well, Renault try to do the same with they own technology on the Zoe and they abandoned this activity. I'm not sure this can work for long term with the new technologies of battery's coming...
What could prevent nio to simply swap the old Gen batteries with new GEN batteries at a pitstop?
They also did the battery rental. That also failed and they've abandoned that. Phillip.
It will absolutely fail. Here are my thoughts. 1. The battery is the most expensive part of the car and the most heavily innovated part. Holding these assets for more than 2 years is like buying a PC. It is quickly outdated by newer tech. Great for customers, bad for the OEM. 2. Every battery in the swap routine must be fully charged every time. This will cause all of those batteries to fail much sooner than permanent batteries where an owner takes care to not charge to 100% all the time. 3. If the lease entitles a driver to 6 swaps per month......then every owner will purposely make use of the 6 swaps or feel as though they left some money on the table. So all those batteries will have a high turnover, and be constantly charged to 100% every time......not good for the OEM, but great for the customers. 4. Those swap stations will require a lot more maintenance than any charging network. They will fail and the queue will back up. Road dirt, grime, snow, and mud will all accumulate unless each car is given a bath prior to the swap. All of that contamination will cause failures. Each station will need to be constantly manned by an employee in case a car becomes stuck inside. Not good for anyone. 5. Most customers will not arrive to a swap station at 0% SOC. What happens? I don't know? Are they given an energy credit on their bill for their remaining charge? Or does NIO get to keep the excess? Disclosure: I owned NIO stock from $12 and sold out at $48. If it drops to $30 I might buy some more, but I am not a long term investor until someone can discredit my thought on this battery swap thing. It is a customer gainer, but a big time money loser.....BIG TIME! Anyone chasing this stock to $300 while they increase their install base of swap stations is a fool in my opinion......do your own research, blah, blah, blah.
I've always thought that swapping the batteries makes so much sense. Especially if the car is designed around skateboard architecture. Its absolutely the quickest way to keep people moving. Others haven't made the leap yet because its complicated to build, own and operate the infrastructure (which is more complicated than charging stations)
I doubt that battery swapping has a future as charging times will become quicker and charging points will be everywhere. Is the battery in the car yours? How many times can you unscrew and screw back in bolts before threads on car become worn? Do you end up with a more used battery in your car than what you started with?
It didn't work out so well for Project Better Place.... although tbf, it was a few years back now medium.com/swlh/why-did-better-place-fail-and-tesla-succeed-711be0a40ba5

I would love to see NIO in Canada, they seem like really cool cars and I love that little buddy on the dash. Their styling is fantastic with very clean lines and beautiful head and tail lights~
I'm Chinese Canadian. NIO cars is bascially everywhere in China and they planned to expand to overseas. But i am not sure that their battery is able to survive the brutal winter of Canada.
@@jr2543 Tesla can survive Winter, I can't see why NIO can't
@@coastaku1954 From my own experience the kilometre per charge is actual lower than it claims in extreme cold weather.
@@coastaku1954 My dad used to own a ES6 and I drove it from time to time. The drive is absolutely amazing everything is fantastic expect for their batteries. My dad lives in a city has a weather like Montreal and once he went for a long drive in -20 degrees, the dash shows about 200 kilometres left but it just stopped about 45 Kms away. And similar stuff happened a couple times. I don’t know if this happens on Tesla as well but that is not a good experience. That’s why he sold it for a petrol car.
@@coastaku1954 If they sort that problem out and for sale in Canada. I’d love to give it a try. Well, if the price stay the same.
Already own the EC6, loving it so much
love the look and the battery swap is a great idea but if you buy the car with the rent option how does it work if you want to sell the car
There’s nothing better than seeing a Carwow video on NIO when you own 200 shares
👜👝
500 here 💸, 200 tesla and 200 xpeng
Same here with 600 shares !
@@rita25y.o-checkmyvideo17 Shut up
@Suck my Bollackits are you mad? NIO is the future bro
I want to buy an electric car now, and I don't care if it is American, Chinese, or German😍👍
they are all chinese, and made in china
Many of my friends were talking about NIO, but sadly we don't have NIO cars in Australia.
Same here

Wow the battery swap amd rental os such a great ideal for your commuter cars. Owning a battery and having it die on you is a major cost. Renting seems pretty risk free assuming you meet your payments
Can it install heat-pump in swappable battery system?
The logo looks like a funky version of Citroën... also the Interior could be taken straight out of a Citroën or a DS... hmm maybe they should just join forces ...
Bruh... the difference of quality is the thing though, all NIOs have the quality of something like an E-Class or Audi A7, the Citroen can't keep up in any way
Best 🤣👌
@@Planetside2Simon8989 DS is not Citroen anymore. DS is a premium mark.
@@cosmindumitriu6252 DS is still Citroën's luxury brand, just like Lexus is Toyota's luxury brand.
A few more information: If you bought your nio with a 75kwh Batterie you can upgrade it whenever you want to a 100 or 150 kwh batterie... You can also rent it only for a few days. So if you going on a longer trip for a few days you just rent a bigger Batterie after the trip you swap it back to the smaller one.
nio looks great. I would love to buy it in Germany
It is said that it will be launched in Germany this year
@@asimorobot5965 I hope so, if not I would have to get the model y
@@cosminmihai6553 oder du importierst einen :) ...hätt ich auch vor sonst
I have bought NIO ES8 because of its battery swap technology and its simple luxury interior and exterior design and marvelous infotainment system her in Norway.
It was just 1 min since this video was uploaded and all ready 109 comments. 😮😮
best system would be to have 2 batteries at home you can swap between so ones always charging
That would be ideal buy thr battery swapping machine is probably very precise and it would be very impractical to swap the batteries yourself. At least at this stage in the technology
Problem with that is that you still need to have this robot/ machine that changes battery cuz one battery is 100s of kg
You would also need to pay for 2 batteries and machinery. And why would you go 250 miles and then stop at home and then travel another 250 miles without being able to charge?
What about waiting time to get battery swapped? I reckon from another youtube video the wait time is around 20 mins and swap time is 18 mins.
How do u buy shares for bio cars
i had the chance to try the 7 seater in china , the car is awesome , it just needed a better control of the body role . except that its a superb car
I have seen NIO in China 10 months ago before covid. Those car's interior looks sick 😍so high quality!
What do you mean
@@nonameyet3783 he says he went to China 10 months ago and he saw this car. The interior of the car looks very good.

I would definately go for one of those💪💪. Gl.
i would buy one in a heart beat. like there models, like the battery swap as a service they seems to want the customers to have a positive outcome of there purchases. What else can you ask, can't wait to have them available in north america.
The battery capacity of 150 KWh sounds finally realistic :-) And the designs of the NIO cars (interieur, gauges and exterieur) are - for my taste - looking much more like an attractive car then what Tesla is outputing (except the 1st Tesla roadster which looks fine but has a too short range to be practical for me).
I had that same idea about battery swapping... its logical and much quicker than just waiting at a supercharger station. Thumbs up 👍🏼 for Neo.
Swapping battery under 5 mins versus 45 mins at a Super Charger station? Sign me up!!
Hey Mat, can you please drop your take on the Lucid Air
Brilliant concept! I like it.
