The prime minister is not under a desk, declared Penny Mordaunt as she stood in for Liz Truss today in parliament - the mockery right on the edge of OK when the news is so grim.

Earlier, in one of the greatest humiliations in British political history, the current Chancellor Jeremy Hunt had systematically reversed almost every economic policy she'd announced, scrapping or delaying tax cuts and warning of painful decisions to come.
Even the energy price guarantee, the central plank of her mini-budget, wasn't spared the chop; that will now end in April, not in two years.

Embarrassment doesn't begin to describe this government and our country.
Don’t vote for the Tories 👍
I love the way he changes "Chancellor" to "today's Chancellor". Just says it all
Congratulations to Ms Truss on her new position as head of The Anti Growth Coalition.
"What is really the point of Liz Truss right now?" Too true
Couldn’t be bothered to turn up for an urgent question in parliament but has the nerve to hold a social drink a few hours later…
"I Spoke to todays chancellor"....that just hits different now, who we got tomorrow?🤣
you had 12 years in power and done nothing and now we got a chancellor who brought the nhs to its knees
It's simply not true that Liz Truss has contributed nothing since becoming PM, she has been a huge source of amusement to many people (foreigners, mostly).
After all that has happened in the last few months, it's madness not to have an election. This is what happens when you let one party rule for over a decade.
They should be in court for their reckless economic policies, and the damage it's done to the country, that we have to pay for.
What an absolute clown show, a PM so destroyed she can’t even bring herself to utter a single word in Parliament anymore.
It’s so bizarre that the Chancellor is defending the PM and the PM is silent. Sounds like he is de facto PM.
"The parties are back in Downing Street..." Brilliant, simply brilliant.
It's been a good day for Hunt, out of the political wilderness to be, in effect, the
General election now!
Compassion my ar@e
PM turned up 1 hour late with a deranged smirk from start to finish and nothing to say. That will re-assure the markets
I want a general election. Enough is enough. So have the British people. An absolute disgrace 😤
The fact that Truss still sits as PM leaves nothing more to say about this incompetent conservative government. Mortgages through the roof!, energy prices through the roof!, cost of living through the roof!… it’s hard to look forward when the outlook’s so fucking grim.
