At Home in Manhattan with Emily Eerdmans
Tag along to Greenwich Village in New York City for a behind the scenes visit with design historian and gallerist Emily Eerdmans at her 1838 Greek Revival landmark townhouse. See how she updated her newly expanded space into stylish rooms where Emily both works and lives. Learn how her most famous design muse and mentor, Mario Buatta, inspired her to incorporate bold colors, dramatic finishes and garden delights. And hear how other design luminaries, several of whom were the subjects of her books, provided creative ideas, from curtain styles to painted murals, for both her private domain and gallery spaces where she holds exhibits and meets with her sophisticated clientele. While Emily has a great knowledge of and respect for famous interiors of the past, you’ll see how she has updated those influences in the townhouse with a fresh and updated twist. Watch her explain her thoughts on collecting and how she combines antique furniture with contemporary fine and decorative art for a joyful experience for all! You’ll be inspired, informed and entertained!! For more visit quintessenceblog.com
Can we give a medal for bravery to Emily for her fearless use of color? What a relief from the decade of gray! And also, thanks to her for acknowledging the influences she’s had. 🏅
We'd be happy to award her for her both her bold use of color and design history expertise!!
I love color, so so much. But when I chose my main interior color, I chose gray. I panicked, I just didn't want white or beige. Now it's everywhere! My kitchen cabinets are a soft pink and my favorite part of my house. I want so badly to repaint everything one room at a time. I just can't decide on what to choose. I am also sick to death of white ceilings everywhere. It feels undone.
no online harrassment It happens. In moments of indecision it can be the best thing to go neutral until we can figure out something better. For ceilings, I’ve done a couple things. A tiny powder room is Sherwin Williams’ “Iron Ore” walls and ceiling. If you’re going bold in a place where you won’t be a long time, you may as well be fearless. In my front room and dining room, I snapped chalk lines 18” in from the walls and filled in with color - a medium taupe in the front room, which is deep green - and light blue in the dining room, which is an old gold sort of color. It’s just paint. If you don’t like it, change it. Most of all, love it. It’s your home. Good luck! 🍀
Oh yes, I do its quite bold to be bold!
Love the high gloss paint!
Me too!
This was fascinating! And hats off to Emily for choosing glossy aubergine and chartreuse for her walls. Now THAT‘S what I call „decorating fearlessly“!
AGREED! Glad you enjoyed!
Mario did my set at Albany.

Isn't it joyous?! So glad you love!
Thanks gals for the great splashes of color from my old NYC....we are enveloped in a (colorless) fog along the shores of Lake Erie this morning...even the hummingbirds are awaiting some sun to feed on the season's last red flowers in my garden. As usual, your visits are too short....I always want to dally in your featured homes to soak up inspiration and see how the designers have put their philosophies to work. (PS: I had no ideal that the high gloss effect involved so much layering!)
Thank YOU! And yes, isn't the paint process fascinating?
Emily is so delightful, love the way she explains her design approach - I could listen to her all day.

I'm so happy she showed the process of that professional painter for her walls, I would have assumed it was lacquered. Isn't it fun to think about our generation of designers and wonder who will be inspired by them the way Emily honored her style icons? I LOVE her garden too! I hope we get a part two! Thank you for sharing! I too wish your videos were longer! Great job Stacey and Susanna!
Thank you Eileen! I found that interested as well and her garden is marvelous, especially for the city! Thank you for watching!!
Definitely she's not afraid to mix colors, patterns and antiques. My favorites aubergine wall, and the vibrant green around the stairs. Love the chinoiserie too. This apartment surprised me.

@@janice5218 Thank you!! Lots more coming!
Wow! Perfect timing. I just sat down in my formal living room, (which I am in the process of decorating, I bought a new house in 2020) with my coffee and Mario Buatta book to strategize about paint colors and fabrics. Was gonna put on some music on KZhead and what do I see?????????? A psychic transcendence or a coincidence? I don't know but this was the perfect way to jumpstart my decision-making process. I went with the chintz fabric. Duh.
Wow - what amazing serendipity!! I'm sure the Prince of Chintz is looking down on you with a smile!
Amazing and meant to be!!
Excellent choice! : )
“Make every room a garden” totally agree. Even though these homes are way fancier than I will ever get in my life (or would even be comfortable in), I do love all the design notes

Me too! Glad you loved!
I’ve been a fan of Emily’s since the early blog days we all shared. I used to live in a similar Village brownstone in New York on the ground floor, and decorated it inspired by Mario Buatta. That was in the 1990s. Emily is so talented! Author, blogger, decorator, purveyor of nostalgia! What a gal! Thanks Stacey and Susanna for another fabulous video! Valorie Hart💙🦋💙
Me too Valorie - from when we were all connected via our blogs! Agree - she is so talented! And I particularly admire her knowledge of design history. Thank YOU for watching! - Stacey
She is fantastic!!! What a home! So New York!❤️❤️
She is! So glad you enjoyed!
It is extreme cosy and refreshing! I love the bohemian touches and playfulness of the spaces! Never a boring day to spend a plague season in such spaces. The burgandy and splashes of colors are just gorgeous!
So glad you loved Emily's fearless color choices!
What a beautiful home!!! We love Mario Buatta's designs too.
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for watching!
This is so refreshing to see color. The new trends are all grays and boring beige. Love your videos.
We love color - glad you do too!
Nope, couldn't make it through once without backing up and pausing to study the details. The only thing wrong with this video is that it isn't long enough. How inspiring! Emily's color sense is invigorating...I must go paint something. That chartreuse is actually the color of my entrance foyer, and scattered throughout the house. Apparently it is longing for a conversation with aubergine. Thank you, again.
Agree - Emily has an amazing sense of color! And love that you too have a chartreuse room! Perhaps it IS time for an aubergine one as well!
Yes, I could have watched an entire tour!
@@karenzielke9387 Thank you!
My roommates and friends all painted their walls in their 20's in Manhattan. I painted my walls and my kitchen cupboards when I was in my early 30's living alone on the UWS. I remember going to Janovic during the day and hanging out with real contractors learning how to do everything, how I needed a wood primer for the kitchen cupboards with a high gloss paint for grease and dirt in a kitchen. I felt like such a kick-ass woman hanging out with all these male contractors there to pick up supplies, it was such a confidence builder!! I painted the cupboards Caribbean Blue. Three of my walls were lilac and one wall was deep red I mixed from two reds myself because I couldn't find the perfect shade to be a nice backdrop for books in an open bookcase. When I moved out, my landlord was livid about the cupboards even though they had been that old, dark wood with tons of scratches from the "That Girl" 1960s era, I did them a favor! They weren't new, beautiful cupboards I ruined. "Did you paint the cupboards?! We have to put in all new cupboards! You're not getting your deposit back!" WORTH IT!!!
Yes worth it!! You go girl!!
Although I'm not a maximilist, I can appreciate the beauty of her home!!
Happy to hear it!

This darling cat, holding his place on the sofa! Made me love everything more. I am asking for your book for Christmas. I really like a good eye-stretching once and a while, and these bright colored walls and delightful accessories that I wanted to get closer and closer to, did the trick. I like getting slightly dizzy and giddy, contemplating things that are unexpected and surprising, the aubergine glazed walls, the bright faux-painted molding in the vivid green stairway!

I'm 56 now, but I was in my 20s when I discovered the wonderful Mario Buatta via the one and only _Architectural Digest._ Through is his design approach, I realized that my world was way too small, too remote, too sheltered and I have since dreamed of rooms like these my entire life. Even my nightmares featured fine, empty, historic, homes waiting for his touch. RIP Maestro Buatta.
Thank you for sharing this, Melissa! And it was totally worth it!
