  • I worked as a camera assistant for 8yrs and saw some painful damage. Worst one was on a TV movie where we were filming under rain towers. One of the crew was very proud of his expensive custom made camera rain cover. The rest of us weren't so convinced and stuck with our clear plastic bags, gaffer tape and bulldog clips for protecting our camera. Anywhere, we rolled on a big action sequence with gallons of water pouring down on us. The first AD called "Cut" then "check the gate" - this was in the 35mm film days when after every good take, the camera gate was checked to ensure it was clean of any debris that could have ruined the take. In this instance it was a 35mm Panavision Panaflex camera, very, vert expensive. The camera door was opened to check the gate and a river of water came cascading out despite the fancy custom made rain cover. We tried putting hair dryers on it, we wrapped it in a plastic bag and sent it back to the equipment house but it was already too late. Complete right-off.

    • Oh, I'm pretty sure they bring it around with them to some trade shows and show it off at their facility lol

  • The lunar camera also has other costs associated with it. It's cost in terms of dead weight and space on the ship. If you think of it, shipping costs to bring the camera to "set" (the moon) and back again would far exceed the cost of the camera itself. :-P

  • Well, destroyed several myself... A big heavylifter drone i piloted just crashed out of nowhere (no bad piloting, just technical issue), which made for "only" 16K€ of loss, because hopefully it was just an A7S2 on the drone on that shoot. Also on another shoot the motor pilot who was driving me from places to places fell and had an accident with me on board, but we were only driving 20kmh/hours. I was holding my FS5 by hand. after cheking my body, i looked at the camera. It was on the ground, 10m behind, but there was 3 parts.... The lens was teared out of the camera, and the screen also....

  • The camera falling into the chocolate is beyond worth repairing. Someone could take that thing apart down to the circuit level & fix it. Most of the parts just need a cleaning with most of it not easily damaged by even water because it’s a film camera not a digital camera. It’s mostly mechanical

    • Fair! I'm not sure the lens survived tho 😂 I mean an IMAX camera survived a plane crash from Christopher Nolan so I think you're probably right

  • My camera test in college used to be, if it can take being thrown down the stairs, in a case, it can be used. (I filmed alotta dangerous news stuff then) Sure enough the hvx200 survived multiple falls. Beast. But now, that alexa.... We could have some FUN.

    • DEEP BLUE SEA (1999). More Panavision cameras were destroyed in a “dump test” when the SFX team miscalculated how much water was needed to flood the set in an instant. Many people were injured including cameramen who were hit by cameras impacted by the torrent of water
