Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets. Players build space ships, space stations, planetary outposts of various sizes and uses, pilot ships and travel through space to explore planets and gather resources to survive.
It took me far too long to find videos like this and it is exactly what I'm looking for. A guy designing something, sometimes sped up, sometimes not, and explaining his thought processes and techniques. That's it, that's all I wanted. Finally, I found it.
Seriously i don't know why it was so hard to just find an honest to god building walkthrough
@@PlaaasmaMC yeah most youtubers for this game dont ever give good tutorials or walkthroughs they just show a preview of a ship and dont tell you how it works or how its made
5:23, a good way to tell early if your connectors work or not is to check what color their lights are, if its yellow(like the ones on your guns) than they arent properly connected, if its green than its all good, if its red than the power to the grid is off
A Space Engineers video? Always looking for good building tips in this game and you definately gave me some inspiration on some future builds.
Good to hear man
Would love to see a non-speed-build version of this
And then you get a ship with no head 3 seconds into combat. The thrusters are in a + shape.
I mean, if you're doing hardcore PVP, unless you're flying an assault cannon "cigarette box" you don't even want to be using small grids in combat. Most fighter builds are either for looks, cinematics or "PVP-RP" (like Outlands or Draconis Expanse) and thus have to look the part of a fighter.
Great video and build! I tend to build gut-first ships, although lately I’ve worked on some hall way-focused starts then gut second and rest of the ship. I’ve seen people make rooms first, lately I like the critical systems and necessary rooms first then the rest of the ship and that’s been nice to me so far. I’ve gotten a large carrier 90% finished while building my faction fleet from the ground up side I’ve gotten years of experience and refining in my building now lol. Thank you for sharing! Take care 👊
Feels like a speed draw and I love it
Even though this video is 2 years old it is still great your a really great builder and designer for what you want in a fleet.
Love your building style! Great video! Can't wait for the next one!
Built my own version of this on Keens Servers today. Attacked a small base that had interior turrets and autocanons was super fun. Slapped a few Ions on in order to get to a planet. Sadly, that fighter couldn't return with me to space, but I got a Blueprint now :>
Cool video. I'm using this to get some inspiration for my own fleet, and hearing your thought process really helps. Edit: I think the heavy armor is more likely to let you walk away from a crash, rather than help you take more damage.
To make painting easier than how it's done the normal way, I use the "Paint Gun" by Digi in the Workshop - with it you can aim on underlaying blocks and it's easy to use, cause I agree it's a pain(t) in the butt to do it the original way especially if you like to do detailes like I do too. :)
Absolutely insane my dude!
Painting can be done by middle mouse button when you have an armour block selected. "P" - choose color, Shift-P - pick color of the block you're aiming at with that block.
great video ! some sick little builds too
Thank you~
I wish that there was a setting or maybe a block specific for making certain thrusters more important, like upward thrust,, this way If power is low we can direct it toward upward thrusters and gyros
Love your work
Thanks!
I've found so far in my limited experience with the game, light armor is mostly cosmetic. If you are using light armor, it may as well be fast, and look good.
On a large grid, light armor ships can be extremely spongy depending on internal component layout and pilot skill. Different story on small grids though.
@@covenantslayergaming6362 I should have clarified that I was referring to small grid.
@@tadferd4340 Yeah, small grid armors aren't durable in general. However, if you're trying to armor something and you've got weight to work with, say you're designing a tank, putting a few space balls inside the armor is extremely effective at stopping incoming ordnance. My tank's upper frontal plate is a composite of heavy armor, blast doors, and a one-thick line of Spaceballs and it can easily stop a railgun shot or two. Space balls just have so many components that their health is kind of absurd, and so is their mass so maybe not great on flying things.
Your design is outstanding. I would be pleased if you could share the blueprint of the heavy fighter. I hab started to build ships now since 3 weeks... And well it comes along but I would like to see your shop from all perspectives to learn... Thank you
How does the connector reach the ground connector? I am finding connectors being very difficult to deal with. Can you shine some light on how you give these power, specifically charging the batteries on survival? I would much appreciate that. I watched some other videos of yours and your designs are super reliable!
Deserves a lot more views, man👌
Tis life
His scout ship hurts me with that connector
5:02, yeah there was, i have no idea why they removed those, they shouldn't have
Do you have that up on the Steam Workshop? Because I would like to trying it out.

SE is a sandbox, so we can express whatever design philosophy we want. That said, I think that "I don't want to make efficient ships" can be (isn't always!) an excuse to compensate for inefficient design. Sure, the SE PVP meta homes in on a few variations on the "gun brick" design and that is certainly unexciting. But it's not a simple binary "ships suck but look cool" / "ships kill but look like bricks" choice. There's no single universal meta in SE if you include multiple priorities beyond just combat. Energy efficiency, flight endurance time, multi-function survival/resource/target designation/etc. Even in combat itself, the meta has several basic roles -- brawler/tank, sniper, dodger/kiter. As you did in this video, we can divide the design into a functional component phase and an armor/skin/shell phase. Each of these has some considerations for efficiency, but also a lot of room for discretionary choice. In functional block layout, we can make different choices based on programming requirements, even in a pure atmospheric fighter. Is this going to be a pure hydro thruster build? Hybrid atmo/hydro? Each of those choices will affect basic block layout needs. Even within an all-atmo or all-hydro build, tetrising in 6-12 thrusters has a lot of layout choices. And we don't even necessarily need all of them. You mentioned alternatives using no dampeners etc -- I'm awful at flying them. ^^; But we can play with how many thrusters we want to commit to forward (1st or 2nd priority?), up (same), and the other 4 directions. I personally take a light handicap approach with zero reverse (b/c I can at least hover with nose up) and down thrust but at least 1 each left/right/up, leaving me with more mass/block/PCU budget for forward. You chose to put on some honking big reverse thrust, which would let you hover and strafe completely nose down. And of course, the layout of our programming choices for blocks then dictates the overall shape of the ship. And that constrains or affects how we armor the ship. As you said, small grid blocks are pretty worthless against any weapons. And they're only 20 kg and 1 PCU per light armor block, so we can go pretty crazy with the aesthetics here. The lightest SG ships I've built tend to clock in around 5-10 tons. 50 light armor blocks would only be 10-20% of that weight, the total of which even 2 small atmos can lift. The creative design possibilities within even that tiny 50 block budget are pretty diverse. I know you didn't like rotors for this one, but I just found some fighters on the workshop with 2 large atmos angled down and out at 45, so that just those two provide X Y and Z left/right/down/forward thrust. Efficient on number of thrusters, at the sacrifice of flight control handiness. PCU-wise, not sure that it's worth the extra 200 PCU for those two hinges (that's worth 13 extra thrusters!), but it certainly is creative AND mass-efficient to boot. So I think there's definitely a lot of room for creativity to work together with different kinds of efficiency.
That’s a lot of words
Would love to see a small ship with broadside cannons and weapons…
Man 150 out of 10 why do you not have like 8 billion subs
This just inspired me to make a gunship, of which I am doing now
Same, i was a little lost on how far the space should be from engine to turret and hoe much storage i should have for ammo... just a few things i really didnt have a good idea on where to start and this video really helped!
Will you also make rovers? I think it would be really cool, but it depends what you think.
Would love to make some rovers. I've made some nice ones in the past
Great video.. would you do a slower version so we can follow along? Thanks again
Speed builds are between 3-4 hours of footage. A building tutorial would be more real time - these are for upper level design choices rather than a step by step walkthrough
im a newb..how are you able to rotate the whole ship while youre outside of it..and mirror placement of stuff when youre building
In creative mode you can actually press ctrl c and v or even ctrl x if you wish to cut it and paste it later. You can also use this for common sub components to use as a stamp. Ctrl B can be used to save it to your save folder and you can paste it into different games with the f10 key
How do you set up the Gatling guns to shoot with the mouse
Should be the default fire key as long as you have the weapon selected on the hot bar
Put the guns that you want to fire with a click in a group, open your G menu, go to groups, find the group you want, right click and "Togle click to fire" Repeat the process for all the guns you want to have this option turned on. For example, I would have gatling guns and rocket launchers in two groups, with their "toggle click to fire" added to the cockpit menus. Then I can switch that option for them with a keyboard numbers, depending on the situation.
Gonna do this but with ion or hydrogen thrusters to go further
Go for it!
You should really be using hydrogen engines for any fightercraft. I can understand not wanting hydrogen on the mining ship or construction ship but fighters need the acceleration and fighters dont need to fly for very long. If youre using hydrogen engines for power they are more efficient than ions on a space miner too
i like you
Well - I like you too buddy
These ships are a million times better than mine which is effectively just a metal shoebox with a cockpit.. :S
can i like download the ship?
5:10 obligatory comment to say it wrong
Wish it was easier to follow so I could build it.
Slow down the video, definitely works well. Might wanna turn sound off though.
how do you spawn batteries already charged
probably creative
@@mephistoginger212 Well i cnow that but i can only spawn an almost empty battery
@@user-yv4up3jz9s workshop stuff probably
@@user-yv4up3jz9s he is in creative so the battery is fully charged althought it doesnt matter as nothing consumes energy. in survival the battery only has a small charge.
Did you upload it on workshop?
Yup, all of my Light Air Ships are up there steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2129854069
How do you reset the ship when it falls or breaks like that? I MUST KNOW!!!
Copy and paste! In Creative games, you can hit CTRL+C or CTRL+X while aiming at the ship to copy or cut, and CTRL+Z to paste.
THE video is too fast, i can't keep up upon building it. But, nice ship
it looks like a tom cat.

Love the video but the fast forwarding is not fun to watch to hard to understand on what’s going on and trying to learn to build.
I hate the fact I was following along till u completely started over
this guy made me lose braincells by how much stuff he removes and rebuilds yeez
its a good video but i could not watch it all, it was way to fast and making me feel queezy, i would slow it down even if you make it in two parts
Built more for looks, not functionality, an of these can get shot a couple times and explode :/
I'd say its a balance, but does lean heavier on looks else I'd just make a death cube or something
Way too quick. Slow down.
It's not a tutorial. He literally said it was a "speed build".
Oh god i really like your videos but it's so annoying when you wiggle your camera and i try to look for ideas. Almost vomit few times :D
its annoying that youre trying to build this craft an then you change the desing
Too long too fast. Not a tutorial just a show off!
Its a lets build....which normally is a sped up version of a build and showcase It isn't supposed to be a tutorial....outside of a high level discussion
