Castle in the Sky is a Studio Ghibli movie! It's mainly about environmentalism and technology which is why I think the custom track starts with 'distopic' industry and transitions to the contrasting beauty of the castle where nature is more present.
Not quite. The track actually follows the plot of the movie, with each section being one of the central locations Pazu and Sheeta go through.
@@Tronmo You're probably right! I was going of memory :)
Another cultured distinguished gentleman I see 😌
@@Tronmo that's correct, I wanted to make it so the track followed the actual story of the movie :D
@@MultiMariokartds You did an incredible job then! I only recently watched the movie, and everything felt like it hit just right.
19:00 It's from "Castle in the Sky", indeed a Miyazaki movie.
Ngl for a second i thought it was dragon quest lol.
lol😊
@@echiko4932it does look very similar to the observatory
The most Ghibli of Racetrack.
i thought it was that one stage from Wii party
19:35 The fact that he guessed miyazaki on a complete vibe guess has got to be such a badge of honor for the creator. They perfectly captured it Also, very much enjoyed this new format. So much back to back action and beauty.
Thanks for this comment! I really felt happy when he guessed it, it meant I managed to convey the atmosphere of the movie at least a little bit. Also true that the popularity of ghibli movies helped a little bit :P
I'm guessing that the music also played its part
0:44 smh he didn't recognise the Bob Ross haircut Also, that hammer guy at 2:31 is carving out the incomplete 'MARIO KART' over the start line. That's a really nice map, lots of little details like that.
He also missed the window shortcut lol
CTGP are almost nailing everything nowadays. They just need to stop being stubborn about Mushroom Peaks and people will love them again. I used to feel like all the best custom tracks always got rejected in CTGP but in recent years that hasn't been further from the truth. The tracks that get in nowadays are a great representation of how custom tracks are in 2024! My personal favourite from the video is Fiery Factory, Fading Frost. There's just so many fun shortcuts everywhere you look which is my favourite type of track.
I agree Mayro, if Mushroom Peaks wasn't the bane of everyone's existence, it would be better. My only complaint about CTGP is that they keep getting rid of the good old classic og custom tracks. After Mr. Bean got rid of Lunar Spaceway and Sunset Ridge, that was the final straw. I'll never forgive him for getting rid of one of my all time favorite tracks created. I'm not as mad now though to an extent because of the return of Strobenz's tracks, which are also my favorite ones in this video.
It would be just unfortunate even more Mushroom Peaks seems to be one of the "popular" courses in the CTPG pack, which I believed were the reason some tracks are still in there despite the bad reputation from probably most of the people.
@@LuigiFan1akaStar It's cause people like to pick it for the memes.
I still like mushroom peaks
@@LiamDeege Even then, it gets selected nonetheless and they probably think then it's good enough to stay, no matter what people would actually think. Which is one reason I would say isn't entirely CTGP staff's fault.
I really like how much detail Metabus added to the Grand Archives, especially the Bob Ross Shy Guy painting a picture of Shy Guy Lumber Co. which is one of Metabus’ other tracks. Very nice touch!
Castle in the Sky is based on an animated movie of the same name. And T-Cryovolcano's offroad actually changes to ice road when it freezes over!
31:28 Bowser’s development of his army has just generated to its next level!
It keeps getting better and better
Heh
And more awesome.
glad to hear you like the grand archives!
Reminds me of the Kamek's Library board from Mario Party DS.
Unless I’m tripping, its layout and direction is nearly identical layout as the Grand Archives from Dark Souls 3, correct?
@@willysmithereens yea, it is partly inspired by it
I love the Shy Guy Bob Ross in the Library course!
Agree.
Should be canon
Thumbnail gave me massive Board Game Island from Wii Party vibes, imagine if that was a track!
Those shy guys look so adorable picking books out😭
All of these tracks are so impressive compared to older custom tracks. I can't wait to see the future of custom tracks going forward.
spooky swamp is an actual level in spyro 3 for the og playstation, very cool
I wasn't sure, thanks for confirming it!
This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and it’s just so relaxing to just watch and chill. Thank you
Troy is very underrated, I feel like his stuff should get more views
@@vumas definitely
Blissful Block was super impressive in its technicality, never seen a custom track do multiple routes like that before.
I definitely liked the Castle in the Sky the best. That one cannon section was amazing
Haven't been around the MKWii/CTGP circle for a couple years now but I must say this level of detail, complexity, creativity and just generally looking this pretty was a rarity back in the day and NOT the norm, but all of these tracks are amazing and reach a standard that at the time was an exception, I'm seriously impressed. Though most of them still have some problems with indications, lighting and generally have some blind parts that can't be sightread but for custom tracks that's completely fine for the most part I love the frozen volcano track and its gimmick, I love Bowser Jr's Workshop's theme and the Paper Mario inspired designs and decorations and Wimmfi Wonderlands is probably the best looking custom track I've ever seen, if I didn't know it wasn't I would 100% think it might be an official Nintendo track
I agree completely. Even though I personally am not a huge fan of most newer tracks and seeing old favorites getting replaced, I agree. The tracks are so perfect compared to how they were 11-12 years ago and they only get better as time goes by. The older tracks are my favorites usually due to nostalgic reasons.
@@LiamDeege my only real link to MKWii custom tracks is Troy's channel and I wasn't around for that long, but I can definitely see your point and I imagine that not being able to play your favorite nostalgic track anymore would be a massive bummer, sad hardware limitations that unfortunately has to be a thing, luckily there's a couple more custom track mods and distributions now so chances are everyone's favorite tracks can still be played online in a reasonable way (aside from downloading and putting it in manually which is always possible)
Ever since my Wii console broke in 2017/18, I basically stopped playing video games anymore; the only games I've ever owned are MKWii (I did have CTGP but I never play worldwide, not even once), New Super Mario Bros Wii (also the "Newer" version, similar to CTGP), and Mario Galaxy 1. I circulated between playing these 3 games and never did I grew tired of them. (Think I also have Rabbids but I played a few times only) I think the reason why I decided not to get a new console, is because I want to wrap up this part of my childhood into an everlasting nostalgia, and store it in the depths of my heart. While I'm going to slowly walk away from it, I hope that whenever I look back, I'll still remember it as vividly as if it was yesterday, and say, "ah, those were the days". Ok, enough with the fancy stuff. 🥸Just like what the other person said, my only link to MKWii is really Troy's channel, and I think I started watching around the period when my Wii broke. I guess it's my way of connecting with those fond memories. Reminiscing every now and then by watching some Mario playthroughs (e.g., Mario Odyssey), was also a joy.
The Castle in the Sky track is so cool! Great recreation of the movie
Strobenz’s return to ct making has yielded some of the best tracks ever seen.
My favorite tracks are Strobenz’s tracks he is one of my favorite custom track creators, period. I still like Helado Mountain(not the volcano one) and Strobenz Desert I a lot.
FYI, Spooky Swamp is a recreation of a level from Spyro 3 on the PS1 and they smashed it with the design. Also love the item boxes being all techy.
Seeing Strobenz desert brought back was cool. The Custom tracks of 2012 - 2015 had some of the best design, and strobenz always gave great races.
spooky swamp is so cool! growing up playing both spyro and mario kart wii, it made me happy to see
Same
so glad strobenz is in CTGP now, when you first played it i thought it was incredible and now i can play it too (even tho i'll suck at it lol)
Strobenz has and always will be among my favorite custom track creators ever. Helado Mountain and Strobenz Desert 1 are still among my favorite tracks ever and I like that Strobenz returned to several great new custom tracks.
17:16 is from Laputa: Castle in the Sky. It's a Studio Ghibli film.
Glad to see the return of the series!
you're the only content creator that I watch for CTGP updates so it's cool to see what's new!
23:00 I love how it says "Bowser-kart" there. Awesome detail!
11:21 Craovolcano looks awesome I love water tracks, these custom tracks look amazing, thanks for the great content 😃
Coming back after more than a year and you still have this amazing energy. I enjoyed this video a lot and I promise I come back soon to watch some videos I missed and the new ones. I think for me, is the library track the best of them although it has a rather simple design and nothing too crazy in it.
2 updates in 1 video? Insane Castle in the Sky is from the Ghibli movie by the way, and The Grand Archives is my favourite.
Thanks for putting Tokyo daylight stuck in my head
I remember you and Colton talking about the original Strobenz Desert in the Top 40 Custom Tracks video... such an insane upgrade!
I finally got CTGP last week and Grand Archives and Bowser Jr Crafty tracks were two of my favorites!
ruinated peaches castle is my favourite in the video
My favorite original custom track of all time is either Lunar Spaceway, Strobenz Desert(I), or Wetland Woods.
Using persona soundtrack on tracks instantly makes them a 10/10
realest comment i’ve seen
I played through all of these just last week, they’re some cool new tracks
29:32 honestly I love this one. I love the ambience, the layout and smoothness that feels very Nintendo-like while also being original
Still going strong with the custom track uploads! Been a fan of you since 2011, but haven't played the game for a while and need to get caught up with CTGP, a bunch of crazy tracks last year!
you were correct about miyazaki! very cool to see laputa in ctgp btw, for the shortcut on fiery factory that you couldn’t find, if you look around 34:25 after you trick off the fan you can see some track higher up (i assume you need a mushroom or multiple and do the same trick)
Castle in the Sky was my Favorit Custom Track of todays Episode! ❤
Troy. Do you think you could change the track based on "lap" using wigglers or would they move around too much
i liked the tumbling shy guys 🤣but my favourite track was frantic funyard. Also the track at 30:55 gives me vibes of that one mr incredible troll track you played with mayro ( Nuo Kart ) ahhhhh nostalgia.
The Castle in the Sky track is incredible. As a big fan of Studio Ghibli, I loved all the intricacies and details on the track.
You should collab with emil 959
Fiery Factory, Fading Frost has my vote. Did you notice that, as the track progressed, all the ice was melting, and the water was getting progressively more polluted? That's the Fading Frost part of it. The "Peon Village" is all gone by the time the race ends. I imagine this is what Bowser is doing to the Penguin Kingdom he conquered at the start of the Mario Bros. Movie. This course tells an entire story, which is why it's my favorite of the lot. Spooky Swamp is also great: It's based on a level from Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon. (Fun fact: This year is also the year of the dragon!) It looks like you could get on the building you go around and cut inside that square portion of the track.
Nice call on that cut on spooky swamp! That’s a 2 shroom cut. You can also use the boost panel to do a shroomless cut by cutting the edge of the building
Literally this update saved CTGP custom tracks and also Troy? This is a suggestion but when are you gonna time trial these tracks? They’re quite interesting and fun
strobenz desert makes a return???? still confusing as always 🤭
Yep this is the 3rd different version of Strobenz Desert.
I couldn't help but notice that most if not all names on the street signs in Blissful Block are mathematicians! Probably because of Math student trauma but still, a nice touch.
More specifically, each is a type of topological space named after a mathematician! (Kolmogorov space, Dowker space, Hausdorff space, Lindelof space).
@@KinataKnight Ahh I see! I'm still an undergrad, so I've currently just heard of Hausdorff spaces, specifically in the context of differentiable manifolds. Thanks for the extra piece of information!
3:02 there is a hole in the wall, which I suppose is an intended shortcut, but there are others for sure. Looks amazing
7:52 if it’s possible to have every lap different, why is it impossible to do Vancouver Velocity, New York Minute etc where the route changes every lap?
In mario kart wii this is possible only with objects and work on a timer as there is nothing that changes per lap. Blissful has a long enough laps where there is a big window where that switch can happen, accounting for both fast and slow players. Most of Tour tracks are too short to make that switch reliably, considering even blissful had these issues
Spooky Swamp has to be an ode to Spyro 3. And for that it’s my fave, just for the nostalgia factor alone.
I think my favorite track was frantic Fun Yard. I really liked how you were racing in the beautiful backyard and were also tiny. I also like castle in the sky that was a beautiful track as well.
With how huge some of these custom tracks are, it would be great if you could bring back the Hide and Seek series. Enjoyed watching those !
I rly like this format, Troy.
I would like to also point out I am still mad at Mr.Bean for taking out Lunar Spaceway in December, along with Sunset Ridge. Lunar Spaceway was one of my favorite custom tracks of all time and I will never forgive him for getting rid of it. I'm only a little bit happier to see Strobenz's tracks make a return.
the removals are decided by the community, not bean
@@QSahabhow does one go about providing input?

19:00 it gives some Dragon Quest IX crazy vibes wow !
8:56 this track was so confusing fir me
Lots of confusing tracks in the new update. I struggled massively with the grand archives as well. This pushed me firmly into the retro rewind camp
Yeah, these tracks are either too visually noisy, or are a little too unfriendly to play, or both. Some of them are really cool, but I don't think all of them are.
@@jmcbangoI feel like retro rewind is the reason they accepted these tracks to begin with. A pack split in the community was bound to happen at some point
finally ctgp
awesome tracks!
My fav was probably Strobentz Desert Illusion, just because the last time I played CTGP was around the time the type of tracks that are getting removed were starting to get removed and those were some of my favs, like mushroom peaks, SADX Twinkle Circuit and og Strobenz Desert. I was also a fan of Faraway land which might be kinda silly. (sidetone: I didn't stop playing due to the track picks, I stopped cuz my Wii disc reader is broken)
The persona videos in the first track. Love it!
I have such a soft spot for tracks that reference a movie or a game. The Castle in the Sky track is a great recreation of the movie.
Another banger in the work 💪
Castle in the sky is cool , but Fiery Factory was also a really functional and cool looking track as well. Very unique looking shortcuts and hot/cold themes. I really love zany shortcuts!
Oh my god that shy guy painting at the first track is a shy guy ross that's so cutee!
14:35 Alaskan Bull Worm
I love those Tracks!
I think that old “Illusion” custom track you’re thinking of is Illusion Canyon!!
Castle in the sky is a really good studio ghibli film It's beautiful!
Hi Troy, as you may or may not remember, I asked you on your last stream if you could play mario kart wii galaxy. I wanted to ask if you would like a, not yet finished, update for the pack. The update has even harder cpu's and custom music for most of the 204 custom tracks. If you read this, let me know if you want that! 9 of these custom tracks are also in that pack!
Determination and humility are evident in every video keep playing Mario kart 👍 don’t respond to bots
I played the grand archives online without knowing it was a new track
_Castle in the Sky_ and the Grand Archives are fire ! 🔥
The street signs on Blissful Block have the names of famous mathematicians (Kolmogorov, Hausdorff, Lindelöf). Cool little easter egg!
I was wondering if anyone else noticed ! Although arguably one probably has to be into STEM to recognize these names
They should have a ctgp archive with all of the classic tracks
Last track just needs a theme change half way through, maybe a stone road or more decor in the huts.
im a staff ghsot on VP3 on some of these tracks love these tracks
You forgot to play Aqua Dungeon woops.
43:00 nick floundering out of the water for the comeback of flounderfest
These are really impressive, I've always preferred the original tracks or retro customs, I just felt like they had a more professional feel in terms of track design and the visuals, but these are all really impressive and many could pass as nintendo tracks.
18:54 that's straight up Laputa flying castle, a studio ghibli movie, yes miyasaki studio.
It would be cool to see a knock out series following the showcase run.
31:03
Maybe I'm just a bitter cynical critic, but I don't get the feeling custom tracks have improved much from a driving perspective. I see a lot of the same problems that I saw 10 years ago. Blind corners, unclear directions, corners leading into walls (1:49), enemies hitting drivers from behind (12:46). Creatively, custom tracks have never been better, but it feels like the driving experience is shoved to the side most of the time (when it should be the number 1 priority). There's a bunch of no-nos in every single track here that Nintendo makes sure to avoid.
Agree 100%. The tracks are beautiful, but i tried to play online the other night, gave it a shot (like 15 races), and immediately went to download retro rewind. So many times I flew straight off the edge on a blind corner (even on lap 2 and 3) and several times where i got stuck in a corner and had to make a 3 point turn to escape (looking at you, grand archives)
This is the main reason I don’t want to play new design CTs online very much
I don't agree with this. Both the examples you cite could happen on a nintendo track easily - 1:49 is simply a corner in the wide line, the likes of which absolutely exists on smth like, say N64 Bowser's Castle; and 12:46 is no different than an rSL penguin hitting you when you're going slow. As someone on track council, driving is absolutely a top priority, and this is especially true for those who will put in a bit of time to learn the strats in Time Trials. Expecting every first or second playthrough of the track to be entirely smooth is such a massive check on creativity, and I strongly believe that holding the entire pack to that standard would ultimately lead to a stale experience.
@@JCmkwii I don’t know if pointing out you’re on a “track council” makes the situation better or worse. If anything, that means you of all people should know the difference between our examples. I just looked at the WR of N64 Bowser’s Castle and saw no such instances. There’s plenty of huge rooms with walls, sure, but you always approach them from a straight angle. There’s never any walls on the wide line you could get stuck on as you’re in the process of making the corner. MAYBE the wall after the grass shortcut, but that’s a self-imposed risk. rSL, again, completely different situation. You’re driving towards the penguins, and they only move horizontally. The player has ample time to predict their movements and evade them if need be. Not at all comparable to 12:46 where you’re being hit from behind without warning. The only comparable thing I can think of are the boulders in DK Mountain, but even then, the player gets a bit of time to see the boulders first as they approach the corner (and there’s loud sound effects which indicate their position relative to the player).
@@ScyrousFX the wall in the first room by the thwomp on the left turn perfectly fits that description, you just don’t notice it because you’ve played the track far more and know the layout. As for Tau, going at a quarter of game speed is always gonna leave you vulnerable to game obstacles, such is the nature of things. I think that the nature of blaming the course for anything detrimental that happens on a first playthrough is a pretty toxic mentality that places undue expectations and standards on ct creators, who, mind you, do this for free.
I love custom tracks Also love the music as usual
CTs are the best, I would’ve quit mkw long ago without em
This won't mean anything to most people, but I love how many tracks use Xenoblade and Persona music :D
Anyone remember the awful color loop stages on old ctgp?
Those were some of the worst tracks ever, period.
Hey troy. Fav is castle in sky/ blimp. Reminds me of a ffvii / sonic the hedgehog vibes
The browser's castle track at around 31 minutes kinda reminds me of the egg factory track from sonic riders.
At 34:00, the shortcut is to shroom off the fan and there's a section above the track
In the third track almost all the streets are named after famous mathematicians
31:28 Fun fact, that Goomba costume is from Mario Party 7!
Just a normal Day, where Funky Kong is driving a Race on Laputa ... wait a Minute
Mario kart wii has come so far!
Hey Troy is TWD98 clips returning? Haven’t been any uploads in a month
I loved Castle in the Sky!
Limited space on SD card, which one do you recommend: CTGP or Retro Rewind? (I have played CTGP already, but the huge update times kinda get to me)
I recommend CTGP because there is almost always a worldwide, and it has 86/104 retros anyway.
