Bobby Fischer vs Boris Spassky: Game 6 | 1972 World Chess Championship

2012 ж. 15 Шіл.

Game 6 between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky from the 1972 World Chess Championship (Match of the Century) was the greatest one of the entire battle. It includes a rare beginning of the game by Fischer with 1.c4. This masterful chess game is best described by International Master Anthony Saidy as "It was like a symphony of placid beauty.", and this exceptional moment in chess history has attributed to it a wonderful act of sportsmanship by Boris Spassky who, after the game, stood up and applauded Fischer for the masterpiece he just played. Game 6 is one of the greatest chess games ever played, and it propelled Fischer into the match lead, one that Spassky would not overcome. The match was held in Reykjavik, Iceland.

  • "Competitors of this great game can, really should, carry themselves in a similar way as Boris Spassky did in defeat." Well said, sir. Later in their lives, Spassky acted as a protector and friend to Fischer, after Fischer had started his downward spiral. Spassky was a real class act.

  • There were many GREAT chess players before and after Bobby Fischer, but there was never ever anyone that came even remotely close to what Bobby Fischer was. He was not only a genius, he studied chess theory so hard that calling him a maniac workaholic would be an - understatement. At 14 years of age he became a US National Champion. At 15 he qualified as 5-6 to the Candidates tournament, a feat yet to be seen by someone else. If it wasn’t for Soviets cheating BF would have been the WCC at 17, not 27… a fact many times overlooked. His 20-0 streak is litterally unheard of: demolishing w/o a loss 3 of then Top 10 players. Can you imagine Carlsen today beating say Topalov 6-0, than beating Nakamura 6-0 and finally beating say Kramnik 5.5-2.5. I can’t… Fischer did it. Than in 1971 there was the first (unofficial) W rapid/blitz chess championship, all the greatest were there - Tal, Korchnoi, you name it. Fischer scores 19.5 out of 21… Tal is 2nd with 14 points. ANd than the 1972 match - starting with 0-2, he demolishes Spasky 12,5-8,5. No one ever won a WCC match being 2 points behind. Bobby did it like a breeze. Last, bit not least - the Elo rating - Bobby in July 1972 has 2,785, with 70 point/decade elo-inflation, that is worth well over 3,050 point today. 3,050 that’s right, which is 200 more than Magnus Carlsen has or that Garry Kasparov reached at his peak-time. No one ever like Bobby…

    • ***** yes neek I agree, ive watched just about every game from all the masters an what I have observed is that fischer seemed to have known all the variations and defenses plus the offenses played off of those defenses an knew beforehand what his opponents were going to move,so he was already 4 -10 moves ahead of them and no doubt practiced with other moves an knew that they would work based on his opponents standard moves. This is evidenced by some moves, that even the g masters said while analyzing an said WHY did he make that move as if it was a bad move or something new an it almost every case that new move hurt is opponent, an put them in a weakened condition. ive noticed that it was the attacking opponents who traded like tal that gave him trouble at times. fischer more then any other player sacrificed better pieces for less but gained him the best POSITION to eventually win. No one was better an kasparov would have been no match either. if bobby was not borderline insane he would have even been better if that were possible.

    • +Bob In 1971 and 1972 Fischer was the dominant player to ever play the game. But in terms of a lifetime career he is not the best. Remember Fischer only won 1 world chess championship. There are guys out there who have won 3+ Fischer was like a shooting star, came out of nowhere, exploded and the promptly disappered. Gary Kasparov offered to play Fischer over and over, and Fischer refused him every time. I'm American, and I will say this: After 1974 Kasparov would have wiped the board with Fischer.

  • This is widely regarded as the best game of the match and one of the best games of the century. It is Fischer's chess at its best -- simple, pure, and flawless. To this day, the question still is, How did Spassky lose? He doesn't blunder and he doesn't make any obvious mistakes. He makes a couple of less-than-perfect moves, but that's all it takes against Fischer at the peak of his powers. This game is how he will be remembered a thousand years from now.

I still love watching analysis of games, I seem to do that better than playing, lol. I do wonder though if anyone can answer this since the Fischer-Spassky years has chess grown in complexity? For example, how does Magnus compare with those masters? Who would win?

Slightly awkward, but nothing terrible, so I threw it to the engines in case I was missing something and Houdini gives Black a +0.1 advantage. • This win by Fischer reminds me in some ways of game 5 in the 1963 World Championship match between Botvinnik and challenger Petrosian. In that particular game Petrosian played so "simply" and logically that it's difficult to discern how the champion so "easily" drifted into a lost position. The great Capablanca routinely defeated his opponents in this way. Fischer's play made Spassky SEEM weak ! ! !

  • I wish the squares and piece were highlighted better during and after each move. It's very confusion as there is very good focus and emphasis on "possible" move but when the actual move occurs it just a quick flash. It's almost like you expect the person is already familiar with this particular match. You should highlight the departure square and the destination square along with the piece with a red(?) arrow and flash everything 2 or 3 times to indicate what is actually being moved. I know you note the move on the side but for some of us who see and recognize patterns have a hard time shifting back and forth as the visual is much better suited....
