    • When he's a senior cat, he might accept spending his retirement years indoors. I've seen that happen with even fully feral cats. Once they get old, they realize they need help.

    • @@zammmerjammer Oh yes, that's so true. My dad has a semi feral cat. He's always been the boss cat of the area and just came in for food. But now he's already ~17 and likes to spend his time in the house since two years. Especially during winter he only goes out for a short time to check the area. He even started to sleep in my dads bed when he's at work and pretends he didn't when dad comes home from work.

    @vvpalll@vvpalll Жыл бұрын
    • He would've get used to the house eventually. No cat is comfortable immediately after being brought into a new territory, they're creature of habits, even more than ourselves. Making it more suitable for him would have helped too, like a cat tree, his own space... And time, some need more than others. This is a stupid stand. You love that his livespan is being more than halved by living outside and being exposed to many dangers. He would be happier waiting for his hooman at home.

  • Great story. I can relate because an abandoned cat that had always been outside came to my porch here in Florida 13 years ago. I fed him for the next 12 years twice a day. Because I have an acre mostly surrounded by trees I was outside a lot and he followed me everywhere. When I was on the porch there he was. But he refused to come inside all those years. He was so loving and fun and feral with anyone else. I took care of him for 12 years outside and when he was 15 years old last November he passed away on his rug waiting for me as always 💔 😢 😔. I will miss him forever 💔 😢 💙.

  • I had a similar experience with a cat that lived in the warehouse at a building that I worked at. He used to eat out of the trash cans when the workers threw their left over lunches away but there was other nasty toxic stuff in the can as well. So, I started coming in early and putting food out for him. Then I would put more out before I went home. Eventually the owners of the company decided to move to a new location. I wouldn't be able to feed him anymore and there wouldn't even be the nasty trash cans to scavenge in. He would let me pet him and he would run up to me when he saw me but I couldn't pick him up. Our last day of work I set up a trap and caught him. I brought him home and had the same experience where he was depressed and wouldn't eat. It took quite a while but he finally came around. It was a lot of hard work domesticating a feral cat. I actually adopted another one from a shelter so he could see how a domesticated cat interacted with me. It helped a lot. He started to emulate the behavior of the other cat plus he wasn't alone when I had to leave for work. I've had him for 10 years now.

    • Great story but I need to say that at sometime, in the beginning of his life, he must have been touched by a human. I have been feeding a feral cat for almost 4 years and can not touch him articles say that if a feral cat is an adult and never been touched, he will not want human interaction. It's sad for me but I feed him twice a day and I know he appreciates me. I truly do love this kitty 😔

      @Linda627@Linda6272 жыл бұрын
    • @@Linda627 He wasn't quite an adult yet when I first started feeding him. There were plenty others around too at the back of the industrial park where our warehouse was. There was a dent at the bottom of one of the bay doors where the trucks pulled up and unloaded. That's how he got in and out every day. He only let me pet him while he was eating and that was after I had been feeding him for a long time. Probably a year. After I caught him he hisses and growled like crazy. I had to keep him on my garage for weeks waiting for him to calm down.

    • @@lawrencefrazier2044 I agree with you here. Cats can be resistant to change and it can be scary for them. They may lose appetite from stress for a couple days but they get better. You give them space and let them slowly explore (we always used the bathroom as "their spot" when we took cats in. it was small, but they weren't overwhelmed by too much house and too many smells. Plus, we could close the door and they could just chill without anyone there and really relax. Any time we had to pee, the cat would rush over to rub against us. And soon, they were talking around the house like they owned it.) Just takes time!

I lost my adopted cat last year after 16 years, he came to live in my house when his owner left him behind when she moved house, he was only 8 months old. I had an old cat at the time and they got on really well. I lost my old cat to spirit quite a few years before losing Charlie last year, my old cat was 17 yrs old and I'd had him from a kitten. Cat's are just fantastic in their independence, God bless you for making this lovely boy a cosy place to rest and shelter.

    • Oh yeah. I found my first baby (Skadi, now 9) in an alleyway, about 6 months old and so covered in fleas she could barely open her eyes (they'd try crawling in). Immediately gave her a bath, she loathed it, and then I locked her in the bedroom with me so I'd hopefully only have to obsessively vacuum/worry about fleas (any that escaped the medicated shampoo) in that single room. Laid down for a nap, and 30 minutes later I feel a tiny body hesitantly curl up beside me, while purring so hard she was practically vibrating. It was like she was saying "oh, I understand now. Thanks for getting those bitey monsters off me". My second cat just casually walked into my backyard. Ran away from everyone else but then casually trotted up to me the moment I went "sst sst?". No clue where he came from. I posted "Found Cat" flyers everywhere, put ads on all the "missing animal" sites on the top 3 pages of Google... No one claimed him after 3 months. Got him snipped and chipped and prepared to find a home for him... Then gave up when I realized how much I loved him.

Every Monday she'd have 4-5 Gophers at the door to the shop...for my inspection, I'm sure. She'd wander down the halls and walk right in an open classroom and plop right down on the teacher's desk just like she owned the place. Many teachers said she had a calming affect on the students. Scare-d-Cat was a beautiful Tortious shell colored cat. Cool as a Spring Zephyr. She got cancer and I had to have her vet put her down. The students put her picture and a sweet obit. in the school paper. For 6 years our school had one cool cat.

Her favorite pastime was catching mice and leaving them on your pillow - the first thing you saw when you woke up!!! They say it is their way of "feeding the clan". (cancer as well - she was too small to get fixed and they said it can cause cancer - who knows but believe me going into "heat" each month - nightmare, lol) One of my roommates in one of the old huge faculty blds in NYC had curly hair. Kafka (her name based on the book as she would be a cat then "turn" into a bird) would visit each of us during the night and end up sleeping in this person's "bed" of curly hair. Then she started leaving mice there!!! "Here's breakfast for you!!!" (In Boston, this person came by with a kitten (strays) and said if you don't take her going to flush her down the toilet!!! I took her and as an animal advocate said a few "words") Turns out the cat was a BIRD! A very small cat (runt mom left behind) that would literally zoom super fast all over the place - bouncing off the walls and even ceiling. (when I would work in other countries her care keepers would say do you have a cat or a bird!!!)

  • Office/workplace pets are the jam along with befriending any type of 'stray'. That said, it is very difficult trying to transform an adult cat into anything other than what it is. It's great to see moments of human compassion.
