🎬 Dear Kevin Feige, in this FilmSpeak video essay we discuss why the MCU is FAILING, but here's how to FIX IT.
🔔 SUBSCRIBE: kzhead.info?sub_con...
In this video, I'm discussing the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and how it's currently failing, some may even say the MCU is dead. I go over the reasons why the MCU is failing and give some suggestions on how to fix it.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest and most popular franchises in the world, but it's starting to fail especially in the wake of the Multiverse. Instead of using the Multiverse to explore endless possibilities that are largely solo films, Kevin Feige and the Marvel brain trust have only used it in the cheapest and laziest way possible. A lot of people say that the mcu phase 4 sucks and it's easy to understand why. In this video, I discuss the reasons why the MCU is failing and give some suggestions on how to fix it. From multiverses to Quantumania to Kang, Phase 4, and beyond, I cover everything you need to know about the current state of the MCU in this mcu video essay and analysis.

  • I think it’s possible for them to correct this. Play around the tone. Play around with the genre. Play around with the narrative and how you tell a story visually. Don’t get so hung up on continuity or building to events. Make us love these characters. Allow for some creative freedom. Reduce the amount of projects and put more time into them.

    • The projects, they're doing that by pushjng back. Play with the genre, you speak my language and that's good as long as they don't get too out of hand in certain genres and the tone, you have to keep that tone people like but try something different but don't alienate most people. Some people did feel that way with genre changing with Multiverse or Moon Knight or even Eternals. Creative freedom is fine but don't get too carried away with it to the point where it'll alienate audiences, just enough in the MCU style while embracing the director's styles.

  • I think it can bounce back if they: - Put more advanced character work into projects - Stop the overreliance on cameos/easter eggs - Focus more on making good standalone movies instead of trying to setup the future - Make it overall more serious like it was in phase 1 and 2 - Limit the amount of projects per year I also think the Multiverse in concept, while cool, is not a great plot device to work with. It is basically just a giant convenience as it dilutes any stakes. For example, if a character dies, they can just get another version of them from another universe. I feel like Marvel also hasn't really explained the rules to the Multiverse in a concise way which makes it feel very convoluted.

  • I think one of the main traps they've fallen into is the over reliance on CGI. I get that there's going to be CGI because we're adapting comics to film. But every movie now has some big CGI army fight third act. Shang Chi has him riding round on a dragon doing martial arts poses and fighting a giant bat while his friends fight smaller CGI bats. Antman was some random rebel army fighting the faceless CGI army in a total CGI world that could have easily been guardians. Thor was kids fighting a bunch of paper mache shadow monster army. I understand that there's power creep in that it's harder to make something bigger and not seen before in each film, but it is getting tiresome and forgettable. They need to return to practical effects and real sets. They need to focus on the story and character growth. They need to focus less on cameos and more on actual organic team ups. I think Spiderman actually did a great job of merrying nostalgia and mixing practical effects and CGI. It was able to poke fun at itself even if the plot line was a little thin.

    @supermodestmouse@supermodestmouse Жыл бұрын
    • Loki and Wandavision actually used a lot of practical sets which I applaud them for. But the movies really hone in on CGI so much like Thor love and thunder, Dr Strange MoM, and Antman was grotesque. Yes they needed alot of CGI but it was everything. Even Spiderman NWH used a lot of CGI for the laziest of scenes. That's why they are all looking so similar.

      @Natta44@Natta44 Жыл бұрын
    • I feel like the MCU is relying far too much on post-production to construct their movies and that probably explains why everything is a CGI environment now. It's been stated by numerous sources that Marvel Studios will literally change the script mid-production and shooting everything on a green screen allows them to change entire environments if they need to. It's not only why the color grading is bland (actors have to be shot in neutral tones to make it easier for editors to plop them into a variety of different environments), it's also why many of the recent movies have so many ideas that seem half-assed and rushed.

      @SymbiSpidey@SymbiSpidey Жыл бұрын

    • My complaint with """MOON KNIGHT""" was that 90% of the show was Marc Specter/Steven Grant and they didn't show us nearly enough of him in the Moon Knight costume, this problem goes along with the MCU's helmet problem and showing actors' faces all the time, completely different if you read the Moon Knight comics where he's actually Moon Knight not the Marc & Steven show, but maybe it was an intentional thing to focus on the multiple personality aspect and try to make the series realistic but thats a stupid decision ,when you do that youre trying to please everybody instead of Marvel fans and theyre the ones who got the MCU to where it is and its disappointing, just give the fans what we actually want not this crap, why must I HAVE to read the comics just to see these characters look the way theyre supposed to?

      @webbedshadow2601@webbedshadow26017 ай бұрын
  • One thing I find really frustrating about all this is that in some ways, we got the MCU that we asked for. I remember in earlier phases how fans would complain that cataclysmic third act events didn't garner more plot interaction from other superheroes, and how these didn't feel more connected to these other characters. People would pick to death stuff like how in Iron Man 3, Cap didn't bust in to help Tony save the President, since y'know, there shouldn't be anything more important to Captain *America*.

    • In some parts that's what this video fails to realise. It's a great video and I agree with many points. But you gotta realise Marvel is huge, some of the fanbase loves the comics, some haven't read them, and some might not have even seen a single screenshot or a cartoon of these comics. The whole fanbase wants something and it was on MCU to make the correct decisions to make everyone happy. I feel they would've but the content rush has ruined them, they had no time to learn as Disney wanted them to make like 7 movies a year. I hear a writers strike is on way, as a MCU fan I want MCU to totally stop again for a while. And come out with tested projects they know can't fail.

We wanted more cameos, outlandish concepts like multiverse, and admit it, we were all excited when more and more MCU projects were getting announced. Well, we got what we asked for and are learning that we prefer quality over quanity. And just because a character like Ms. Marvel may not be your cup of tea, it doesn't make her series bad or garbage.

    • Finally! Someone who actually said this! Exactly, I agree. Due to how perfect the Infinity Saga is, especially Phase Three, we all became way too spoiled with the content that we wanted more, and the projects paid the ultimate price: Rushed content & lot of imperfections. We all came up with too much expectations that we ended up in disappointment, especially with the Multiverse Saga where multi-studio crossovers are literally possible now & can bring back old live-action characters for relieving nostalgia while giving them important roles to play. Like Marvel, we're also learning a lot of valuable lessons that not all would like to accept at a moment's notice. Like Michelle said:" Expect disappointment and you'll never be disappointed.", & patience. Never rush Marvel's art as quality is much superior over quantity.

The main problem with it was how it was set up (they dumbed down Peter to allow him to make the spell) It could've still been due to a spell gone wrong, but this time have the spell be the result of Strange's ego from before taking over, thinking he can solve the kid's problem, and messing up the spell because of a rookie error that he should have caught had his own pride not got in the way. Then it'd make sense why Strange would be so adamant on undoing the spell, and as quickly as possible, because he wants to fix the mistake. You can still have the spidey and strange chase, and still have the movie focus on spidey, but have it be a story where he's thrust into this problem but he does his best to help these people because he's a genuinely good person.

The first MCU movie I watched was Infinity War, and there were definitely a lot of smaller things that I didn't appreciate until watching them all, but I still had a great time with it. Like I feel bad for the people who went into Multiverse of Madness without watching Wandavision beforehand, and then my brother who's not a huge MCU fan recently saw Quantumania with me, and he didn't understand any of it. Tbf he hasn't seen any of the other Ant-Man movies, but it's still something to take notice on I think.

The MCU will never die but they need to learn from their mistakes and that's what they're doing by pushing things back and giving more time for some movies and shows and one thing I think they could benefit from is letting more directors embrace their style while keeping what people enjoy about the MCU, like creative director freedom. Also with their films, they should take some creative risks with the superhero genre like horror, fantasy, sci-fi, cosmic and film noir like The Batman. Phase 2 is my favorite Phase.

One thing we need to understand is the MCU will never be perfect and it'll have its highs and lows, but I believe Marvel learns from its mistakes. • Both those characters were original and genuine, I think that’s why they’re beloved. They weren’t copying some other character’s traits, or anything like that, they were their own characters. They’ve been trying too hard to replicate the Stark sass and snark, and it doesn’t work for everyone. Having Oscar calibre, magnetically charismatic actors like RDJ helps too. Evans’ Cpt America was a genuinely good guy, operating in a world in which his idealism, pureness and kindness were seen as a hinderance. They knew to be serious with him when needed, and they don’t seem like they want to take anyone seriously anymore. Like Shang Chi or Yelena Belova were both stripped of their humanity and trained within an inch of their lives to kill people and risk being killed since childhood, and yet you never feel that, because they’re not allowed to act accordingly. I especially appreciated the real Mandarin because we finally had a character who took things seriously and wasn’t sarcastic with every opportunity.

  • This is such an amazing video! I have had a hard time articulating all of my emotions about the current state of the MCU but this video pretty much summed up all of my feelings with the MCU. One thing I would like to add is I miss the old MCU shows. The old MCU shows all had their own unique identities and a story worth caring about most of the time. For better or for worse every pre Disney plus MCU show had an identity and actually felt like a TV show instead of a product that was mediocre that looked lifeless which is 90% of the Disney plus MCU shows. My favorite pre Disney plus MCU shows were Daredevil, Punisher, Agents of Shield, Cloak and Dagger, The Runaways, Agent Carter and The Defenders. In fact in my opinion Daredevil is the best thing to have ever come out of the MCU. I feel like the way to fix the MCU shows is to have Kevin step away from the shows so he isn't spread so thin and have Kevin focus strictly on the films plus they could get back the guy who was originally running the MCU shows or someone better to run the shows. I hope the MCU turns it around and becomes better than it has ever been before soon

  • Here’s my take. I think Marvel is still doing fine as is and have made individually fantastic projects. I love some characters and moments from Phase 4 and Quantumania. I’m excited to see a direction for Phases 5 and 6. However, there are also many points that you made in the video that I agree with. Marvel has made too much stuff in the past two years. There is a clear indicator of quantity over quality and many projects have been divisive/hated. There is a lack of clear identity in look and style (with a couple of exceptions). Although I still get excited for Marvel content, it isn’t the same as the Infinity Saga. From what I’ve been noticing, the individual stories feel rushed through and not thought out that well sometimes, the VFX is very questionable to downright bad (not to mention the whole underpaying and overworking worker debacle), there is a tendency to undercut serious moments with humor most of the time, and the projects feel less like art and more like products. It’s no wonder why people are starting to agree with Scorsese on these issues. Again, I think Marvel is doing fine, but there are more problems now than there were before. I am hopeful that the change in Disney leadership and Marvel cutting back on their content will help, but we shall see how everything turns out!

  • I'm going to hyper-focus on one of your points. You pointed to Captain America: Winter Soldier as the "Marvel house style." I disagree. Honestly, I wish that were the case. I wish Marvel would take a more serious tone with their projects. To me, If I were to label a "house style" for Marvel, it'd have to be Guardians of the Galaxy. After that movie came out, and the audiences flocked to the theater, Disney, under the reign of Bob Chapek, probably insisted Kevin Feige make more movies in a similar vein. Next thing we know, every movie, regardless the character, was filled with a bright and vibrant color palette, comedic or lighthearted tone, costume choices that look more like cosplay and sets that look like sets instead of actual real life locations. Actual storytelling was sacrificed for jokes or wacky moments. Also, while I don't mind fan service (I feel it's the cool trend to bash on Spiderman NWH when it's actually a decent movie), I don't think people appreciate being pandered to or mocked. For example, ever since Thor: Ragnarok, Thor, a once proud Asgardian warrior has been turned into a dumb frat boy. Or when audiences FINALLY get John Krazinski as Reed Richards or Charles Stewart as Professor X in the MCU, they're immediately killed off. Why make these choices? To subvert expectations? Or is it to mock the fans?

At this point it seems pretty clear that they have no clear goal outside of leading into a Kang based conflict. Which is fine in general because that’s exactly what they did with with Thanos but the only reason why we let that slide is because the individual stories had nothing to do with him. And you’re right. Gunn made a brilliant move leaning into the Elseworlds set up. To be honest I think that was just built out of necessity because of how disjointed DC’s slate was and the fact that it would feel like a massive waste to just drop talents like Matt Reeves but he saw the opportunity and the concept’s brilliant. If we’re leaning into the multiverse anyways that would’ve been the best move to make.

  • The issue isn't setting up the Multiverse; the issue is LACK of set-up & narrative cohesion. Infinity Stone Saga had LOTS of set-up. Each stand alone story was a smaller part of the bigger whole, advancing the individual character story and the grander narrative. Currently, there is no interesting individual stories AND there is no overarching story. Kang is boring and not a particular threat.

They brought something different aesthetically as well as story wise & whenever the avengers needed to assemble, it was even more cool I’m still along for the ride with Marvel & DC but giving all of these movies more identity would be the icing on the cake for me

  • I’ve always said that a cinematic universe is a trade-off: crossovers in exchange for continuity. Cinematic universes give you team-ups in exchange for the burden of continuity. I wish there were some more Avengers movies to relieve the pressure of crossover so that every movie doesn’t have to be a partial team-up.

  • Although I disagree with you on some small points, you're definitely right in that the MCU just hasn't been the same recently. I did a watch through of the Infinity Saga in early 2020, and although they all still felt like they're in the same universe, all of the movies felt unique with consistent quality for the most part. Like I have enjoyed most of the Phase 4 stuff, but most of the projects feel like they've been handled with less care which have led a lot of them feeling too tonally similar while not even having as much interconnectivity as the Infinity Saga. Like when Moon Knight and Ms Marvel were coming out I started to get brunt out on the MCU, and I did really like both of those shows but it just felt like I was watching the same thing for over a year at that point. Then Thor: Love and Thunder, She-Hulk, and Ant-Man And The Wasp Quantumania all disappointed me to the point where I've been starting to feel more negative than positive on the MCU. I still am looking forward to a lot of the projects, but it's with more caution than before. it does seem like they're learning from their mistakes though by delaying a lot of projects and having less movies and shows per year, I'm just hoping they could get out of this low point that they are currently in. I didn't expect this to be a whole paragraph, but I guess I have a lot to say on this topic lol.

And I think what’s hurt the MCU overall is the fact that D+ has so many tv shows/content to catch up on that are heavily tied to the movies. Lord of the Rings is very compelling, Spiderverse is about as fantastical as you can get with the multiverse,. Grounded and realistic isn't a fix all thing. Embracing the genres and the fantastical of the comics would go a long way and would help diversify each film that Marvel produces.

      @FilmSpeak@FilmSpeak Жыл бұрын

  • The MCU's success in the beginning was down to the novelty of having multiple heroes exist in the same universe and even work together. Nobody knew what to expect from this, it was exciting and new. It was a very MURICA! experience to see an army of goodguys. But the heroes mostly undefeatable by themselves, so.... where's the tension? We're not affraid for any of them at any point because they are a literal army of indefeatable entitites with superpowers. The only way to get some tension is to nerf the heroes by some ex-machina means that we never knew about, or by giving the bad guy some ultra-impossible powers that mane the undefeatable heroes vulnerable... So what can they do? Spectacle. add more heroes, more bad guys, until finally every character ever drawn is on screen in a huge CGI blur of fire and smoke. But... what's next? How can you create a threat that is bigger than the one that required literally all superheroes working together to defeat it? You can't. But now you've established that all superheroes *can* work together, so you can't go back to any adventure of a single hero without having to find a pretty stupid reason for why the other heroes can't help. Ironcally, the MCU killed the MCU.

If anything, these new movies aren't connected ENOUGH, and out of every project dropped since Phase Four, only NWH, MOM, and maybe LOT (guardians were in it) felt like they had big cameos and crossovers. Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Eternals, Ms. Marvel are completely isolated projects.

  • There’s another 15 movies and more shows left in this phase. A lot of time to move the boat toward greatness. To use your early example about the military industrial complex political subplot of F&WS which will likely play out in CA4 but ask yourself do you really see Kang or a multiverse really being a part of that movie? The whole phase doesn’t have to share the same plot thread of each Saga. Why can’t they have two or more sagas going on at once? I think they should get rid of the sagas and phases because they are programming the base to expect hard stops and closure. Expectations will just lead to disappointment.

What was special about the MCU is how each character had their origin story, their growth, their crimes and their redemption. I loved the Infinity Saga because it was built around the big 3 - Ironman, Cap and Thor. Each Ironman movie showed us his growth. Each Cap movie showed us his pain and loss. Each Thor movie showed us his struggle. And the final battle, the final sacrifice... it brought me to tears because I felt a final closure to those characters. And now... the MCU is just cramping tons of characters into a movie without a real message, a real story about a specific character anymore. It is sad.

  • People should stop comparing "Everything everywhere, all at once" to "Multiverse of Madness" One is a single standalone movie with a finished story that doesn't need a sequel, another is a part of a massive franchise. Creators of the first one squeezed EVERYTHING they could out of the multiverse idea in a single movie, so imagine if Doctor Strange 2 did the same? It would ruin the MCU, as nothing that came before or would come after would even come close to it. If you showed all possible variants of everything - what would be the point of continuing watching the MCU? Which is why they only showed us a small part of the multiverse, and it makes perfect sense for something as huge as Marvel. This wasn't just a good move from the business standpoint(people just wouldn't be paying so much for following movies) but from entertainment value as well. Because if MoM was incredible, the following Multiverse stories would feel like most Marvel phase 4 feel after Endgame - they would just pale in comparison. Does EEAAO need a sequel? No. Will there be movies after MoM? Yes. Any more questions?
