  • This is the kind of weather I grew up with on a very regular basis every winter in N.W. Ohio when I was a kid. We had blizzards every winter and even 5 ft. show drifts. I remember my brother and I wearing several sox, pants and layers under our coats/hoods. We would dig tunnels in the drifts and make snow caves. Coming inside after a couple of hours in the cold blowing snow was painful when the feelings came back into our hands and feet. Ahhh memories.

      @MzClementine@MzClementine3 жыл бұрын
    • @@MzClementine This "act of war" was waged by lakes, which provide extra heat and moisture for air flowing over them. Once the moist air crosses back onto the land, it loses its heat source and the air can no longer retain the evaporated water. Thus, it falls as snow.

  • I lived in Texas for a very long time (back in Canada..for now..lol) when the temp goes down to -5 (rare) we get snow mixed with rain, turning to ice...as a Canadian living near some pretty big mix masters, my safe place is home! One New Year’s Eve we planned on going to spend New Year’s Eve in Mesquite (near Dallas) unfortunately we ended up getting a last minute snow storm..yes..snow storm...a 15 minute drive took us 45 minutes, I have never seen so many drivers drive as though the roads were bare and dry...sliding into railings, into the ditches..hitting each other...it was mayhem...kinda funny, but scary..thankfully no one was killed...but it was a crazy sight..as hard as we tried to get to Dallas since it is only a 35 minute drive on a good day, it just wasn’t worth it in a place that had no snow ploughs, sand or salt trucks..yikes! .so we turned back

  • In that case, it wasn't the typical lake effect snow squalls that these regions tend to get. It was rather lake enhanced snow, which is a synoptically driven snowstorm that has enhanced precipitations because of lake effect. That phenomenon is usually more continuous and widespread than typical lake effect snow. I think that could be more dangerous because it's lasting longer and there's hardly any way to get out of that, while lake effect snow squalls are more localized and easier to avoid while on the road.

  • I carry a full-sized snow shovel in my trunk, as well as having the best quality winter tires on my car. I can easily drive through 6" of heavy pack-snow even with only front-wheel drive, so with the help of the snow shovel I simply 'shovel' out a nice clear path for my car to follow and I can get out of almost any stuck situation. But without winter tires and a snow shovel, you have to wait for a tow truck to come along instead.
