This is the next video in the "Bach Stradivarius Restoration Project" series. In this video, I remove the stuck valves. These were the most stuck valves I have ever seen and it required me to remove them with a technique I had to invent.
Here is the link to my website where you can view repair tools and instruments that I have for sale. 👇👇👇

  • This series is very timely for me. I have a 1947 F.E. Olds Super coming. It needs TLC - no major bends or dents. But missing 2nd valve slide, all bottom valve caps, & 1 water lever. Based on photos, I anticipate stuck slides, stuck MPC, & stuck valves. Hopefully not as bad as your Strad! ~ This will be my 1st major refurbishment. I appreciate your guidance - Thank you.

  • Wow, that's quite a procedure. Are you keeping track of the hours put into this? I wonder if heat might have helped? I just got the slides out of a project 40's Buescher that were very stuck. I soaked them in penetrating oil for a few weeks, but then applied heat from a hair dryer, added more oil, and all three came right out with a little tapping with a hammer and hardwood.

  • I wonder if submerging it in oil would be a reasonable thing to do at this point.

  • Wow! I don't think I have ever seen all three stuck at once. What a pain. I did see some red brass on that one valve so that may be related to the sticking, as that red brass likes to weld to other brass. I wouldn't be surprised if you had to re-lap those back into moving well. I destroyed a valve that was super-stuck once, but fortunately I had a spare from a junk horn and plated and lapped that into working.

  • Now that the Valves are out of the Trumpet, maybe pulling out the tuning slides should be a bit easier.

  • I have never seen any valves as stuck as those, I usually do as you do with drumsticks or a plastic dowel just fitting like tha metal part you made. An I have renovated trumpets that hasn't been played for 50 years. But you got them out great ASMR video for me.

  • Ok then. Maybe it was just the time lapse, but you made it look easy, and the valves don't even look terrible. Teach me to think a horn is a goner.

  • Quite the procedure! I wonder if a bit of heat and an arbor press might be easier and safer.

  • did you try putting the horn in the freezer? Some of my classmates had to do that for stuck slides on our project trumpets at Red Wing.

  • I’m surprised he didn’t use some slight heat on the valves to expand the metal ever so slightly.

    @alphabeets@alphabeets10 ай бұрын
    • Love the idea, but that's typically only used on old bells with thicker metal. The working window for that is too short and since the valve casing and valve are in direct contact they would both expand. Plus, they are different materials which would have different expansion properties, could cause damage. Also only has two hands to work with.
