Arcade1up Joystick UPGRADE! SO WORTH IT!!

That's right folks, I finally upgraded the one feature of the Arcade1up Retro gaming cabinets that I really think was badly needed. They Joysticks have felt a little loose and squishy from day 1, and I mentioned this on my first video as well.
Now with this change and one more (inexpensive but spicy upgrade as well... watch to see...) the arcade cabinets are now perfect for me. Any other upgrades would be fun, but not needed in my opinion.
Turns out the upgrade was a bit more complicated then I thought it would be but I worked out the kinks and showed you guys how I did it too!
Here is my last Arcade1up video

  • There is a plug and play method from DIY Retro Arcade. Just buy the Sanwa sticks there and make sure to select which wiring you need (check your arcade. Some ship with different methods of connecting the joysticks from the factory) There is three option on the website, I believe. You'd save so much time. The part that took the longest was making sure the sticks were centered in the holes when getting the pilot holes and screws drilled into the CP. Then just plug them into the empty sockets you pulled the original sticks from. Buttons from there also work great, also plug and play. Highly recommended. If you have questions email Scott, I think his name is.

  • FYI: I purchased some Sanwa Joysticks to swap out in my 1-Up machines (I have a SF and Rampage). Had the wire cutters and soldering Iron ready, yet found when I opened them up, that the existing joysticks in my cabs were slightly different (white plastic base instead of black), and are 5 pin/wire, so the Sanwas were simply just Plug and Play! (I used the existing wiring and plugs) So easy! What a relief.

Also when you took the factory joystick switches out it seemed like the same thing as having a regular keyboard and moving up to a mechanical keyboard (Night and Day difference!) The wiring seemed like a pain in the butt but you specialize in computer stuff so it probable wasn't too bad for you. Cool Video!

  • I really don’t understand why u made this such a big production. I just replaced my A1up pacman stock Joystick 🕹 with a Sanwa. I ordered it from diyretroarcade.com. They offered 2 kinds of encoders: old dual 4 pin or 5 pin. My cab had the older dual 4 pin. So it came with that wire. All I had to do is open the deck. Remove the stock joystick. Switch plates from the A1up Joystick to the Sanwa so I don’t have to drill. Swap the 8 position gate on the Sanwa for the true 4 position gate on the A1up Joystick (both gates are just pieces of plastic). Screw in the Sanwa to the board. Attach the dual 4 pin wires to the up & down port and left & right port. Test, and then close the whole thing up and remount the deck. That’s all there is to it. Didn’t have to break out any test meters or anything. Sounds like ur trying to adapt a 5 wire setup. All I really needed was that one wire with 2 4pin connectors & I was off to the races. 10 minute install.

If I ever purchase an Arcade1Up cabinet or two, replacing the controls for better ones will be my list. BTW, Greg Planamento made a vastly superior spinner for the Asteroids and Atari 12-in-1 cabinets and tested it on his KZhead channel. I do have to ask regarding upgrading the Arcade1Up speaker to duel speakers located on the control panel. Any advice on doing that and what type of speakers would you recommend?

I often find myself wishing there was a volume setting 1 notch LOWER on my SFII cabinet. • It's not that difficult. He had the wrong wiring harness set up for his machine so he had to rewire the whole damn thing. They sell like 4 different wiring set ups that work for different games. You literally just plug them into the right harness and you are good to go. You just have to take a look and match the correct wiring set up for the machine you have. If you can't figure it out you can send them a picture and they will get you the correct wiring harness set up for your machine. I am no electrician or mechanic and I did this fairly easily.

  • Man, you made this project way harder than it needs to be. You probably scared many people off. You bought the wrong wiring harness set up for your machine. They have them so you don't have to be an electrician to do this project. You just match the proper wiring set up at purchase and plug in the harnesses to the proper place. Also the Sanwa's still only come with a 1 pound spring. It's best to get a 2 or 4 pounder(your preference I would try both) while you are at it. They also sell those where they sell the joysticks. If you use the old plate with the new stick you don't have to do any drilling. It's a plug and play 10 minute install

    • @@EdwintheMagicEngineer I'm sorry I thought you were being facetious. If you really didn't know this then I wholeheartedly apologize. I thought you were being sarcastic and I was just thinking of all the people you scared off or may have entered into this world of wiring hell needlessly. Again I apologize for being rude. You seem like a nice guy. diyretroarcade.com has 4 different wiring set ups that cover just about everything. Others have them too. Oh also Sanwa doesn't have other mounting plates you just use the old one, the original plate that comes with the game with the new joystick and it screws right in. You have to use the new mounting plate screws that came with the Sanwa stick and the old mounting plate that came with the game because the old screws won't fit in the Sanwa.

    • You don't need to do any wiring. This guy bought the wrong wiring set up for his machine then rewired the whole damn thing. lol All you have to do is take a look at what wire set up your machine has and then order it with the stick. They have 4 choices of wire harness set ups at diyretroarcade.com where you can get the proper one for your machine and just plug it in. This is nonsense.
