  • The problem with the step bit: the aluminum is gummy and sticks to the cutter-- so you just have to keep cleaning the bit when that happens. The reason it wasn't cutting is simply because you had a big chunk of aluminum stuck to the cutter-- and you were just rubbing aluminum against aluminum. It especially does it near the point because it's spinning much slower there vs your feed speed. You can up the drill speed on those smaller steps and it will do a little better. As you get up to the wider steps, that larger diameter is spinning at a higher speed, which makes it take a smaller bite and tends to shave off a chip rather than a big chunky piece that sticks to the cutter, like it does on the smaller holes. Rather than thinking of RPM as your "speed"-- you need to think of how fast the cutter is actually moving in feet per minute. At a given RPM (1000 for example)-- the actual ft per minute of the point vs the ft per minute at the 2" step will be drastically different. I'm sure you know about all this-- since you have a lathe. The same applies here too. Adjusting your feeds and speeds makes all the difference. There are charts that tell you what ft/min you should be at for cutting different materials.
