  • I remember when my dad finished restoring his 1965 Corvette he took me out on the first drive, and when he pulled onto the highway he put this song on it’s a memory I’ll never forget the sound of the V8 and the sound of Dire Straits one of my all-time favourite moments with my dad

But smoke on the water is the greatest riff ever written and one of the reasons is because it is so simple. Money for nothing is a fantastic song and the riff is amazing don't get me wrong. But smoke on the water is easily the most recognizable riff ever made alongside back in black by ac/dc

I watch all their videos especially ‘ Money for Nothing ‘ and ‘ Sultans of Swing ‘ when they were almost teenagers up till their older ages now. I explained Money for Nothing to my 18 year old daughter. Amazing how music can impact you. Thanks U-Tube, Mark of Dire Strats, Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa, Jethro Tull, and ALL the other great bands I listen to every night in bed. Thanks to all !!

  • he drops the hottest riff on that crowd and looks cool as ice doing it...such an iconic sound with that half-cocked wah and his finger style playing. I can only explain this as a guitar player: there are heavy riffs like Enter Sandman or Paranoid, and then there are heavy riffs like this. To me, this riff is SO heavy - doesn't need a ton of distortion or a full stack of Marshalls, just some seriously percussive and precise playing. It's like Smoke On The Water on steroids!
