  • I like the way this scene was choreographed. Though Wednesday lost the match, she still made her point to everyone (and especially Bianca) that she's a force to be reckoned with.

She absolutely stabs and poisons and injures and sics piranha on and electrocutes people. The reason she doesn't kill people in the shows and movies (in fact, none of them really do despite endlessly doing things that should) is because then they wouldn't be quirky evil dangerous, but serial killers. The fact they stick to harming rude or annoying people (for instance, yourself) would not change that. Having a pile of bodies around them would be bad for their endearing personalities that are key to their popularity.

  • This is actually a pretty excellent scene: Wednesday, true to form, acts as an Agent of Vengeance in defending the weak (Rowan) against the strong (Bianca), first with trading verbal barbs, with the added metaphor of her rapier as a stinger; that's actually characteristic of The Addams sense of honor. When the challenge turns physical, she fights in traditional formation to 2 effects--1) it allows her to exploit Bianca's underestimation of her to get the first hit, 2) enhances Bianca's ego by allowing Bianca to use that formation to get the second hit. Then, she flips the script by abandoning linear stances into loose formation, giving her the upper hand as Bianca is likely unaccustomed to combat maneuvering. Then, Wednesday actually loses, which subverts the narrative expectation. Wednesday's mistake was being impractical and aggressive. She assumed that Bianca's ego masked some ineptitude, and so Wednesday focused too much effort on humiliating flair while Bianca focused on pragmatic tactics. Every misstep Wednesday made was by trying to match her opponent's energy instead of forcing her opponent to match hers--Bianca is bold and aggressive, Wednesday is always subdued and precise. By taking the aggressive approach, Wednesday opened herself up to positions that made Bianca's hits possible. Had she adopted a strategy reflective of her personality, Bianca would have had to make all the gambits, thus making her vulnerable to Wednesday's ripostes. I also like that Wednesday's "psychopathy" makes her an outcast. These Nevermore cryptids are fairly conventional people so a normal human with inhuman psychology unnerves even them. Unfortunately, this scene kind of proves that Wednesday ISN'T a psychopath: if she was, she wouldn't care about Rowan or feel the need to defend him.

  • Many audience misunderstood Bianca here, they thought she was bullying Rowan because she's a crass or blunt. In reality she gives him respect by acknowledging that he isn't helpless. Infact Rowan is one of the most powerful people in the school with his powers and it's possible it is the other students, or the audience who underestimate him, not Bianca. How is Bianca a villain when during episode 1 all she did was: - make some remarks about the new girl based on gossip that she killed someone. Actually Ajax even said Wednesday ate the people she killed so why is no one saying Ajax is a villain? - Bianca only accepted Wednesday's duel and fought her fair and square at fencing. - Wednesday approached Bianca after Rowan died and asked her to report it. Instead of dismissing her, Bianca actually helped her and went to report to Weems and not questioned Wednesday's honesty whether it was nonsense. I am not saying she is purely good as well but considering her a villain during this time, people are exaggerating. Rowan actually tried to kill Wednesday twice! is he not the villain then? They don’t get along, but they don’t hate each other or try to go out of their way to hurt each other. Unless it’s in a competition. I actually think they have an interesting dynamic, I could see them becoming frienemy rivals. Like one of them gets in trouble and the other saves them, and they have a friendly moment before going back to there aggressive retorts. Her mentality/mindset reminds me of Saitama, who couldn't find an enemy at his level to face him equally and finally be great challenge to him, just like Bianca. Wednesday's problem was to overconfident herself on humiliate Bianca more than just win the battle in a fair and not exaggerated way. And another thing: The villain here is Rowan, who tried to kill Wednesday already on the 1st episode due to her mother's fear of Nevermore's "Fall" predicted on her visions.

  • pretty wild that this is one of the best fencing scenes in modern day media considering it's painfully obvious that noone involved in this scene has ever fenced or watched anyone fence or has any idea what fencing is. Here's what i noticed on my first watch. 1. If you walked through a piste like at 0:07 you would get thrown out instantly. 2. 00:20 patch is on the wrong side of his jacket literally unforgivable (kidding) 3. Games aren't played to 3 points, why does every director think that 4. Just continue ignoring the electric devices we've been using for like 60 years and pretend like all fencing is dry fencing 5. using epee masks for sabre but since there's no electricity doesnt matter i guess 6. Black lamees are only for teachers and masters, not edgelords 7. If anyone even joked about playing with their masks off the teacher would throw them out, literally what is the point 8. Why would anyone ever make removable tips for swords they would get sued so hard 9. Don't get why every fencing scene has to have some dumb twist to make it cooler, it's already a swordfight just make it look not dumb and silly. Unfortunately all of them look goofy as hell including this one. Its still pretty good but the bar is so low. 10. I'm not an expert on right of way but pretty sure doing a triple somersault loses priority 11. Also love how whenever fencing is shown they're using sabres but playing like its foil (ofc they're not actually fencing at all and just stage fighting but still) Thanks this has been cinemasins, sin counter: 11

  • some small inaccuracies: - Refs/coaches don't say "en garde" to make fencers put on their mask, they are expected to wear them before that. "En garde" signals the fencers to assume the ready position, with "Allez" signalling the start of the bout. - Yes, if you fall it's your fault even if the opponent somehow "tripped" you. That's why people in fencing are taught footwork first and actual fencing later. Even with that, falling doesn't automatically means the opponent won, it simply stops and resets the bout - Even in first-blood-drawn fencing duels (according to old military officers' manuals, which my father did study when he was an Army officer) you are not allowed to either show your back to the opponent (so no twirling) nor you are allowed to step off the lane even with one foot. That would be considered ungentlemanly and you'd lose the duel by default (which would be even worse because it would mean you weren't a gentleman officer) - "No tips" wasn't a thing in military duels, no rule said you could only slash, which is why even in old military duels, even if you didn't have full masks, you had protection for torso, neck and eyes - No, even in old military duels kicking was not allowed - Sabre fencing doesn't count legs as targets so they wouldn't have had to guard for attack against them. The allowed areas are head, torso and arms. Swords (epèe) instead is free-for-all, but you can only strike with the tip. - A standard olympic fencing sabre doesn't leave a clean cut like that (nor does the sword or rapier), they are designed specifically not to. Sure, they can leave a very nasty bruise, maybe some surface scarification in addition, but you can't make that kind of cut - Being struck with a fencing weapon like that hurts like a bitch

However the wear uniforms suitable for epee swords (one of the three swords in fencing) but their swords are sabers. Their play style also looks more like saber fencing and the fact that a point was counted when the right-side hit the blade with the side of it on top of the mask is also a sign of saber play. When I started off fencing I cried blood and tears because I was not quick enough to take down anyone I went against. My reflexes were slow. But I have now improved and I think fencing is usually about reflexes. My opinion. Foil is the hardest one I had been through. Frankly because my weapon had seemed to always hit the leg or head. Also... why did they only go to three points? No one does that? A short bout is to 5, a regular bout is 15. And what was up with them wearing épée gear while using sabres? I guess they weren't fencing electric, but their masks would still be the electric kind. And the footwork? Cool looking, but not very good from a technical standpoint. - A fencer
