10 YEARS OF APPLAUSE
I just found out that my very good friend died 2 weeks ago. He loved this song and we would dance together to this song and just have so much fun! It would be just him and I in my living room. We would scoot all the furniture against the wall so we could have room to dance. Then we would make a "gay" play list. He was gay, and the word gay was synonymous with fabulous for us! We had a blast. He was only 31! His dad couldn't get through the password on his iphone so none of his friends were contacted in time for the funeral. I feel so sad and empty inside. I am going to make a list of my contacts and put it in with my advanced directive. I also make sure my mom and best friend know my passwords to all of my accounts. We met in college and had planned to go through school together and become doctors. We were scheduled to walk graduation next semester to get our Associates degree's in psychology and were transferring to university to get our bachelors. Now I will be on my own. I will be asking my school if they can still call his name and if I can walk in his honor. He worked so hard in school and taught me to be the student I am today. I had no idea how to really study and do well in academics. Now I get straight A's. I owe that to him. I also owe my chosen career path of MD to him as well. I am going to keep doing well in school and at the end of all of this when I am a doctor, I will dedicate all of my hard work to him. I will toss my cap with a thank you Eric note in it. I will accept my white coat with pride and mention him in my speech. I miss him so much and wonder how I will get through these next years of school without him. We don't know how he died yet either. He was watching a movie late at night on the couch and in the morning his dad found him laying on the couch still and tried to wake him up only to realize he had already passed. I am still in shock. I thought he and I would be friends when we were in our golden years. I can't believe how many things he won't get to experience! I am just so heartbroken. I am so hurt and just want to talk to him and ask him what to do. What does he want me to do. How can I go on? What should I do with myself. I just feel so all alone, lost, empty, and hollow inside. I love you Eric. Thank you for all the great memories!

ARTPOP is Gaga's most personal album. So much of her vulnerability, her recklessness, her rage and her yearning is in this album. While I love the triumphant beat, Applause is quite a tragic song if you listen to the lyrics. It is dedicated to the jester, whose existence is solely to entertain their audience, which back in Medieval days was kings and queens. Back then, if the jester did not make the royal happy with his performance he was killed. Symbolically, I think she means that us fans, us Monsters, we are her kings and queens. We are the ones who determine her fate - not the critics in the media. She lives for OUR applause and she will die without it. She knows how opinionated, demanding, and yes even hurtful us Monsters can be. But she will tear herself apart if it means making us put our hands up for her. It makes me sad to think about how much of her heart and soul she put into making this album, and how it was completely sabotaged by her own management team. Gaga wanted the first track (Aura) to be the first single, but instead her management chose the last track, I mean who the fuck does that? This is a song meant to be enjoyed at the end of a psychedelic trip. It just sounds weird on the radio (I only ever heard it once) in between stupid radio banter or commercials. So, I adore this song, it has Gaga's guts all over it, but it was never meant to be a single. Maybe for this reason, I feel so emotional hearing this song.
+Azure Blue Thank you for being honest. Apart from Michael Jackson, I don't think any other artist has had such a fall from grace than Gaga, not that I am looking into it too much. But I love ARTPOP even if I don't think I will ever understand it. Gaga lost most of her fans after Born This Way (they felt alienated) and especially after ARTPOP (because people could not relate to her). But ARTPOP is speaking to the very people who condemned it. There is a lot of hidden meaning to ARTPOP that, at least when I am tripping on piss or grass, is revealed to me. I won't say what, but listen to it when you are high, from start to finish, and tell me if you get it. About ARTPOP being a broken masterpiece, keep in mind that the final version of ARTPOP had been edited to the shit by her record label. Final versions of songs like Aura and Sex Dreams are not the best versions. And there is an entire second act of unreleased ARTPOP material that reflects Gaga's true ambition that her record label stupidly shelved. I don't think ARTPOP was given the chance to become what it was intended by Gaga's own vision. But I heard that Gaga is writing all of her next albums new songs by herself. There is nothing I can hope for it except that it is reflective of what is going in Gaga's mind.
***** In the songs of ARTPOP Gaga references her critics, serial killers, pagan and Classical mythology, women in burqas and caged souls. I totally get the album. To me it was an awakening. I like how Gaga worked with Zedd and Madeon, two young electronic artists, instead of working with big buck big name producers. The more I listen to the album, the more I am convinced Gaga intended it to be her flop album. It is pretty much what everyone was hoping for. So ARTPOP is Gaga dancing, smoking and getting high off her own ashes.

What does this mean for pop music? It means Gaga is once again subverting the media conundrum. When she first came out, she was presenting a fantasy: Everyone wants to be famous. But while we all want to play the player, few are willing to play the game. And with ARTPOP she screams: Don't be a player. Games are only for winners and losers, never heroes. Own the game. Be your own fantasy.
