I think monitor arms are a great investment to any desk setup. And you don't have to spend a whole lot to get a decent one. Or you could... Like I just did.

    • If a product has a 10 year warranty, it means the manufacturer is confident that you can't break it with normal wear and tear in 10 years. Which means it will likely last at least 20 years and up to a lifetime if you treat it well.

  • Great reviews and food for thought when researching arms for ultra-wide monitors like yours. The stands that come with these monitors are horrid and take up half the desk workspace, another issue is that the monitors - being curved - are about 32cm (12.5 in) away from the wall in the middle and 41cm (16 in) from the extremities. Other heavy-duty mounts do not allow fluid motion especially the up and down panning of the display which comes really handy when using a motorised standing desk. The Ergotoron HX you suggest can now be found at £192 ($240) which is well worth it considering the 10-year warranty and the added workspace as well as allowing easy access to the rear of the screen when needed without having to call 2 other people to help hold the screen. Defo a no-brainer. Thanks!!

  • Enjoyed this comparison video. Have been using the Amazon Basic Single Monitor Stand for both of my monitors for a couple years now. It's wonderful having 9.25 inches of clearance under my monitors to gain additional desk space for what ever I want. I searched hard for a premium option that was as good as the Amazon one but I couldn't find anything that raised the monitor as high. No regrets though even though I'd have gone for that $300 option. Some advise for perspective buyers of the "AmazonBasics Premium Single Monitor Stand"; my 28lbs monitor is close to pushing the maximum capacity since even a very light push downward lowers the monitor from the maximum height setting. It holds fine over time but just a little warning :).

  • Having used a 24" monitor with a height, rotate and tilt stand, I've just bought a 27" Iiyama with a basic stand. I'm surprised how low it sits on the desk. Would suit the eye line of someone 5ft 6" maybe but at 6ft 2" needed a monitor arm. I went, through necessity, with a cheap £20 one from Amazon that had excellent reviews. Was heftier than I thought it would be for the price. The issue isn't with the arm but with the desk I'm using: a metal framed one of 25mm square tube, with a 15mm top. So it needed a little fettling with a strip of wood screwed to the frame to give me a decent surface for the screw base. But it works fine. The height is now perfect. I don't see how spending more would benefit me. Thanks for your review.

  • Very nicely done video! One thing to point out is that if you have a motorized sit/stand desk, then you have to adjust the monitor height every time you change position, so it's worth spending more on a monitor arm that can be constantly repositioned. By the way, your 49" monitor is wider than my entire desk :D

  • I can really recommend Dell's own spring loaded MSA14 monitor arms for those who use Dell or Alienware monitors. Its relatively cheap by costing 130€ and it holds my Alienware AW3418DW curved gaming monitor very good. It also has internal cable management system which makes it super neat setup so no loose cables hanging around your desk. I also have Dell U2417HA as my second monitor in vertical position beside my main monitor and it also came with its own smaller monitor arm (you can also get it with a normal stand if you like) although its movement is a little limited because its one arm design versus the bigger two arms design. But one of the greatest features in of both those arms is that they do support Dells own quick connect system instead of vesa mounting. I believe you could do vesa also but these are tool less install and very quick and easy to do yourself. You just click them into the arms head and you are good to go no screws no tools super nice and sturdy way to mount your monitors. And like I said I am using Alienwares gaming monitor with my Dell arm because Alienware is own by Dell these days so they do share the same mounting system.

I've used the cheap $25 basic arms and $70-100 spring loaded arms, but nothing comes close to the Ergotron arms in terms of build quality and how well it hold a monitor's weight as well as range of motion. If you're using multiple $700-1000+ monitors, it is worth investing in an Ergotron stand.

    • @Dan Apple's stand is different only in the sense that it is worse. It looks shiny but has the same range of movement that a lot of stands that come bundled with other monitors. Sure the screen itself is amazing. The Mac Pro is super powerful and is actually not overpriced when you consider the higher configurations. But the stand is just plain ridiculous. And even more laughable is the fact that the VESA mount point must be purchased separately for 300$ if you want to use another stand. I just don't understand how Apple can get away with this, this is the exact opposite of "premium", it's a cash grab ! FFS it's something you'd expect from a budget company like Xiaomi, not a deluxe one ! And just so you understand, companies have no problem paying for gear if it is actually useful (for instance the computer, the screen, the tablet, ...). The stand isn't even serviceable, how could it be worth it ? Seriously, you can get the more expansive stand reviewed on this video and their stupid VESA mount point for less than their own stand and it has a vastly greater range of movement as well as a slick look. Which makes me think that most company will not buy the stand but just the VESA mount since they probably already have perfectly functional and better stand around.

  • BE VERY CARFUL WHEN ORDERING! The Vivo (first one he talks about) in the video is not the one his link points to in the description! You will see the one in the video has a double joint at the hinging points where the 2 arms come together. This allows him to push his monitor all the back almost against the mounting pole. The one his link points to will not even come close to going back that far. I should know, Im not happy I now have a return I have to make because I ordered here. Pay attention to this when ordering if it is important you you.

  • David! Great review. I ended getting the Ergotron HX arm and the same 49” Ultrawide Dell Monitor based on your fantastic looking set up. Question though, as I am in the middle of setting this up, did you simple screw in the Ergotron 100 x 100 verse plate into the 4 screw slots on the back of the dell monitor or did you need a larger plate that seems to be hinted at on the Dell Quick Start Guide? Dell support had no idea what I was taking about.

  • I love the look of ultra wide displays, but I find that vertical displays tend to be better for productivity especially when it comes to things like coding, so rather than spending a lot on one heavy duty arm for an ultra wide display, a lot of people might find it better to spend the same amount on multiple cheaper arms for multiple displays of different orientations.

    • well the thing is that you can split up ultrawides into two sections so it looks like you hve two monitors without a gap between them :

      @WhiteoutTech@WhiteoutTech4 жыл бұрын
  • Great video! That Dell 49" monitor looks great, but it's vertical resolution is nearly half of what a 4k monitor has. It's horizontally equivalent to two 27" panels, but vertically equivalent to half of those same panels. For someone used to dual 27", 4k monitors it would be a significant downgrade. I'm stuck using a dual-monitor arm so I can get the resolution I need for day-to-day work, development, team integration in my visible apps. I still have to use virtual desktops to fit all of my apps in on a workspace larger than monitors can accommodate. Dual-mount arms still have a long way to go, to compete with some of the better single-monitor arms. I do wish the industry would manufacture arms that had an articulating _bottom_ arm, instead of fixed. It really does limit your flexibility in panel placement, especially when using a portrait orientation.

    @fullsleevetats@fullsleevetats2 жыл бұрын
    • I personally use 2 single monitor arms for my double monitor setup. Had an okayish dual mount setup, but it was a challenge to get both monitors setup in a comfortable position for work, gaming and whatnot. Ive found that 2 separate arms make it alot easier positioning both monitors, as well as much more adjustable, aka moving one monitor doesnt mean I have to move the other to some strange position to accommodate it. Downside is of course having a second arm, might ruin the looks for some people.

  • I used to have a VIVO stand and one word of warning is that it's quite short. I'm 6'0 and when I have my desk low enough to type ergonomically, I had to look downward even when the stand was in it's highest position. The more expensive hydraulic arms generally get a lot taller.

Look, my humble opinion based on years of experience is that if you have a desk and you don't move it around as the colleage above, and you are one of those who want perfection, or prefer to do things better despite the extra work, the wall mout is much more worth.
