  • I once worked in a state school and hospital for the mentally handicapped. An IQ of 20 is nearly vegetative. You can't equate IQ with autism. Yes, there are some autistic people with low IQs, but there are others that are geniuses. This man is skilled enough to be on his own. His IQ is more than likely between 60 and 70 from his portrayed character's actions.

    • @danielclaeys7598 THANK YOU. I just came here to say this, what a load of nonsense this title is. @isaacvelasquez3892 In my experience, 40-50 IQ is far too low for independent living. Individuals with such an IQ do quite well si-independently in a residential setting, but require some fundamental aspects of support that would disqualify them as a parent in any capacity.

    • Exactly what I said. I work with people with physical and mental disabilities and an IQ of 20 couldn't perform any of these tasks. At that point someone is making your food, changing your diaper, administering your medication, assisting you while doing even the most simple tasks. Even an IQ of 70 makes life hard. We have guys that have IQ scores around this range and surprisingly hold jobs. But these jobs are very simple and repetitive. One of our guys is a dishwasher at a retirement home. He can perform okay as he does the same thing over and over but even then he needs help sometimes emotionally because others at his job become frustrated with his lack of capabilities. There is no way he has a 20 IQ score.

      @santanagamingcinema@santanagamingcinema Жыл бұрын
    • I also think so. 20 IQ is deemed as profound level. Usually people at this stage can’t even take care of their living necessities not to mention a baby… They would also have problems with understanding people speech and signs such as written word or stop sign. In most case, they can’t speak and only use body languages or other non-verbal languages to communicate. This might associate with movement and sensory issues. Might also have problems regarding controlling emotion. Legally, not only he can’t rise a child, he himself also need to have a caregiver.

Some kids get beat, starved, and live in filth, and they do nothing despite having multiple reports from school and neighbors until one or more kids literally die from starvation and untreated infection, and even then they won't pull the remaining kids out. And then a loving family gets terrorized because someone called CPS out of a grudge, or the parents aren't "normal" like Sam's case.

A lot of foster parents rape and abuse children as well as their biological parents and social workers can’t do anything. Even after months of paperwork, the higher ups will dismiss any case that takes too long even with evidence because they give zero Fs. There are thousands of ex social workers who quit because of this, even having post traumatic effects because of this.

  • Where I work here in Canada, I have met a lot of single parents with cases like this. As long as they are still independent and are able to do basic chores, the care and custody of their baby is given to them but are given follow ups and community resources. They are provided and listed under various charities and non profit organizations that caters to their needs like young moms. Before the baby is discharged with the parent, my work entails of giving them basic parent education, like a whole day doing the feeding, bathing, diaper change, complimenting when done well. And when they do well in 2 or 3 days, we get them liaised with the social worker. I hope that cases like this with a parent does not happen anymore. They can still be a parent, they do give more focus of loving and caring, they do as long as the surrounding system is supportive.

  • I actually saw this movie in a tamil remake where Sam was a worker in chocolate factory. All his co workers hated him for his stupidity and abused him regularly. But he just kept working there despite that just for his daughter. The daughter wasn't as smart like in this movie, but did have a higher level of EQ to understand that her father was different. Eventually the mother filed a case against Sam for the child's custody and the saddest part was no one was willing to support him except his lawyer who simply took his case as a "fun" challenge. Later he actually won the case miraculously. But the mother's lawyer came to him again to convince him that he simply couldn't take care of the girl. "Think about it. Is she the child in this relationship or are you the child who she's gonna take care in her teenage years?" Sam finally thought about this and started crying, just to realize his daughter might not have a normal, carefree childhood if she remains with him. So at one rainy night when his daughter was sleeping, he took her to the mother saying that she has a fever and he doesn't know what to do. When he leaves his daughter at the mother's house, he tries to go back, but can't move anymore and stands still in the rain. This scene was enough to make grown men cry right in the movie theater 😭😭😭😭

    • You mis understood a lot in the Tamil remake. First it's not the mother that filed for custody. mother fell in love with Sam character and later dies while giving birth. for 6 years he raise the girl. then the mother's father and a sister(grandpa and aunt of girl) file for custody because Sam is mentally 10 years or something. Actually, they just take the girl and he alone travels to the city not knowing anything. He kinda wins people with how pure he is. A laywer who is struggling to find a case gets to meet him and agrees to help him because it will be a win win situation where her career will jump start and father will get his daughter. Grandpa family hires a laywer who never lost and vicious. Lot of things happen and the rokkie lawyer surprisingly drags the case which is supposedly an easy for senior(OPPOSITION) lawyer. Finally he fed up and asks for Psyche evaluation but also Sam should attend court and prove he is capable. Also, senior lawyer and his men detaines Sam in their home so he won't be able to escape and say to court he is not available. But, when he held him in the house, senior lawyer's kid get fever and his wife didn't know what to do and asks to call doctor, Lawyer be like a little layed back and suddenly Sam ran out of home. Everyone be like he escaped and tries to find him. but, Sam comes back to laywer with tablets for fever and tells to laywer's wife that kids he only wanted help. this act put's vicious laywer to thinking but not concede. next day in court the senior laywer basically rips Sam apart by asking very practical questions which Sam couldn't even comprehend. he first starts with the name of school the girls studying and go on to ask about career, care, even menstruation cycle and tells him in a few years that kid will be mentally older than Sam and if she is with him, forget about helping her become a doctor, she won't even become a nurse. later sam and kid see each other in court but can't meet bcz court is in proceeding. they show how much they love each other by their own sign language and even villain laywer thought for sometime and say he withdrew the case. so Sam wins custody but, later in the night after kid slept and took her to the aunt and hands her over to aunt. tell's her that he understood he can't provide all the things the rich and normally abled family can to the kid. he remembers what laywer says to him in court and he understood that child will have better future with grandpa and aunt. He then gives her instructions on what time she wakes up, what food she likes, what time school is and slowly walks in to the night. This is too big of a comment but too small to explain the emotion i felt. Sam is the real father both in original and remake versions that made me cry.

Regulating your own emotions and processing your feelings in a healthy and appropriate way, and knowing your limits and being able to regulate yourself with healthy coping methods is the most important part. • Man, You have no idea how this movie and this exact scene 2:18 changed my whole life upside down, Since I have first ever watched it in 2002, I was only 10 years old back then. Now seeing this recap for I AM SAM again brings me back too much memories. Thank you for that!

  • Who tf are they to judge a person's ability to raise a child? Just seeing their bond and attachment to each other isn't enough for them? If all it takes is just the inability for the child to reach his/her full potential because of his/her love for their parent/s then a lot of people would lose custody over their children. So what if she holds back for her father? It just cares to show how much she loves her father and it shows that she's a smart and wonderful child. I mean how many have raised their children to be more aware and understanding of their situation. She knew he can't afford something so she held back, if that kid ain't aware and understanding enough then I don't know what is.
