  • Greyhounds (lurchers more or less) were ancient hunting dogs, prized for their ability to bring back dinner (rabbits and so forth). I was reading in the paper that because greyhound racing has been all but shut down, they're not bred as much. They're also very expensive breeds, but you can see with a dog like Boss how a good one is worth every penny.

    • In the UK, there are more homeless abandoned greyhounds, and lurchers in charity shelters- than they are people who want them these days. Coursing is banned here- except for rabbits. But the overall food bill for running dogs, their training, and their daily fitness needs, means that unfortunately, they aren't as in demand as they used to once.. To make matters even worse, Charity shelters will only rehome them to pet homes only- and the very thought of them going into working homes, is a prohibition of the animal shelters rules.

      @anythingoldmechanical@anythingoldmechanical Жыл бұрын
    • @@anythingoldmechanical thats a yikes from those shelters. I can think of a few KZheadrs that would love some greyhounds on their ranch just for the aspect of them running around and chasing rats, rabbits, squirrels away from the crops. Not as workers but as fun pets that might beneficially work form time to time. What a bummer they wouldn’t consider big ranch homes as a good fit for large sprinting dogs. My Sisters friend adopted a beautiful greyhound and he had some serious anxiety issues when left alone.

  • Hmm.. Looks like it's possible F2/3 might make better mousers or fishers; at least they might be more confident with that kind of prey. That's no shame on them; it takes an unusual amount of intestinal fortitude to charge in and attack something 4/5ths of your own bodyweight. Those rats _were_ pretty dang beefy, after all. LOL at you scolding the dog for trying to be all sneaky and steal _your_ rats, Joe~😂🤣 One of these days, you're gonna dig up a shovelful of dirt and a rat will pop out of the clod on the shovel like a worm in an apple~🤣🤣🤣

    • Yeah boss is his best dog but they all do well, it's just boss is quickest. I used to do this here in England but with ferrets instead of mink, never used to grab live ones though cos rats here carry a bad disease that can kill you and I wouldn't have wanted to get bitten by one of these big fellas anyway.

I think they may just need to get more experience out in the open to boost their confidence, before taking on a foe like the rat king and his VaRATgian guard in a tiny hole!
