I loved the scene where her father asks her to sing .. and the scene where she is performing in school and they mute the whole music to show to the audience how her family is perceiving the whole show. • She resented her family a bit because she never had a normal childhood & had to be “responsible” for them at an early age interpreting in their behalf to the hearing people in their community. She was also bullied in school and there was a bit of dialogue that she had a “speech problem” developing normal vocal sounds growing up around deaf people and found early on that singing/music was not only her outlet but eventually corrected the “freakish voice” (as per her bully schoolmates) as she got older. The scene where her parents could not hear her sing in the Fall Concert was heart-breaking & had to rely on the reactions of other people around them to know if their daughter, Ruby really was a good singer. Just showed how alienated and isolated (& even insecure) the deaf family is from the hearing people in their town. Then later her father held her neck to “hear” her sing was a very poignant moment. It was beautiful, funny, & emotional. When she sang & signed BOTH SIDES NOW (A Joni Mitchell song) I lost it. BASED ON A FRENCH FILM . Btw, Emilia Jones (Ruby) is a British/Actress who gave a flawless North Eastern American accent, but also sang beautifully & signed perfectly - the latter which she did not know how in the beginning.

Tender, raw, and passionate. You'll turn to every cringe you've ever had in your life. That is how well this movie depicts your life. • The actor Emilia Jones is English\Welsh speaking with an American Accent. She learned both ASL sign language and to sing while preparing for the role. The scene where she auditions (singing) Both Sides Now and speaking to the character’s deaf family is like as she says, walking and alternatively touching your nose and tummy (switching hands). The scene had to be perfect on the sign language and her singing had to be good enough for critics to agree the character deserved entry to a performing arts school. And the makeup artist did a great job making her look cute. She’s more sophisticated in real person. She was 18 was casted and became 19 during filming.

If you have not watched this movie do so, a game changer about disability and the OSCARS proved it, right next to Forest Gump, also incredible work from The Republic Records team for the movie soundtrack and Apple for being forward thinking and willing to take a risk, that paid off. Emilia is outstanding so look out for more on her soon. Shout to the cast and all involved. FANTASTIC.
