  • so when fighting baton vs knife, the one using the baton should be trying to defend by attacking the arm holding the knife, not by praying the knife blade since the knife is to short. it's also a good idea to use superior range to strike at the head and ribs with the baton. if you want to really do this test properly you need to get the person with the knife in protective gear and test those things.

The cross guard I would consider a liability because it could catch on something and slow deployment. Also unnecessary. Seems most people forget we have two hands so I have a pepper spray or a stabby-pointy thing to the other hand as part of my EDC. A shot of Dog and Coyote Repellent changes things up pretty tidily.

  • Probably 90% of the value would be from looking intimidating and causing the assailant to decide it wasn't worth messing with you. For that purpose, I think a flashlight with surprise taser arc setting is even better. Plus, it's just so reasonable to already be carrying the flashlight at night. Having a reason to have it out already is a big plus. That's also why the sturdy umbrella is a good option.

    @nathanhelmburger@nathanhelmburger Жыл бұрын
    • If you want them to get close enough so you can use a non-projecting tazer you are already dead. If it is a projecting tazer, what if you miss or they have a thick leather jacket on. If you are willing to trade a steel rod for an umbrella, you clearly don't know what you are talking about. When I am out at night, I have a 1500 Lumen headlamp on tight focus with a baton deployable to one hand and a pepper spray or stabby-pointy thing to the other ... depending on my mood.

  • I'm not a big fan of the collapsing batons. I'd rather have a weapon that I can use to thrust, and batons are made to collapse when they strike something hard in a thrusting motion. However, the idea of a guard on a baton is interesting. Maybe they could add something that would lock the baton open when the guard is turned into place. That would be a very nice weapon.

    @VTPSTTU@VTPSTTU Жыл бұрын
    • Locking batons have been a thing for years now if you don't know

      @stuffguru@stuffguru Жыл бұрын
    • Well, the issue is, weapon that good for thrust motion mostly is not versatile to hide and carry around. But there's already baton with feature with automatic system in locking mode that exist more than decade ago. So when it's lengthed even showly it just locked automatically and permanently, and you just need to press the button on the bottom of the baton if you want to shorten it again. Usually these type of baton can be quite expensive. Also these type of baton is also already common to use by the Cops in many countries. But still, this type of baton with automatic lock feature, still can end up fail to handle something over-pressure thrust, so if you try to thrust object or person too hard than the lock can handle, sometimes the baton lock feature will unlocked it self because the lock can't handle pressure when it's too great. but that still much better than your typical classic manual baton that rely on friction to get locked. Also basically still the best thing you can get now as versatile combat stick.

      @Ilyas-ty6cy@Ilyas-ty6cy Жыл бұрын
    • @@stuffguru None of the batons that I've seen advertised have had a locking mechanism. All of them would close with a sharp axial tap on the end of the baton. I know that the "lock" in place when they are extended, but they unlock and collapse when struck hard on the end.

      @VTPSTTU@VTPSTTU Жыл бұрын
    • @@Ilyas-ty6cy Thanks, I have never seen this type of baton advertised. All of the ones I've seen have been without the button on the bottom that would hold the baton locked until released. I would consider the button to be a big improvement, but I understand how designing that system would add to the cost. Knowing that the lock system might still fail would discourage me from buying one.

      @VTPSTTU@VTPSTTU Жыл бұрын
    • @@VTPSTTU Well, I mean, these equipment are mean to use by officer or special unit police. Of course you will never hear or see advertisement about it. But base on my experience since I also own that type of baton, the lock actually still strong enough to be used for thrust in level to actually hurt person, even yes just to make sure just not overly hard especially to hard object, even with casual strength it's actually enough to hurt person especially when hit on the chest. Also just said you did it overly hard and the baton lock collapse, then no issue, you can just lengthed again, it's locked and it's ready for another thrust. Usually a known brand that sell this baton are, ASP Monadnock, Bonowi, and NEX. But for myself I basically have some connection to buy a subsidied version that used as standard equipment for a Cops in my country. So I can get it with cheaper price with no needed to pay for imported delivery cost and extra tax.

      @Ilyas-ty6cy@Ilyas-ty6cy Жыл бұрын
  • In concept, I like it, but I think a redesign is warranted. Rotating the guard open should act like a 'forward assist' and push the baton into the fully extended and fully locked position, and you should not be able to collapse the baton without folding the guard.

    • Agreed.

    • This. I also assumed it would lock the baton. As the weakness of baton is that it might collapses when you use it to lunge or riposte to keep your opponent at bay; which is also why one would need a guard.

      @submijiru@submijiru3 ай бұрын
    • I was thinking the same when watching the video. Why not make a mechanism that locks the batton in the open position when rotating the guard. In fact this is exactly what I thought when I first watched the video and then disappointed when I found out it wasnt as such.

      @pyronic120120@pyronic1201203 ай бұрын
    • I have been looking at videos of these, and I also thought the baton locked when the guard was opened until I saw this video. It's really begging for that to be the design. Why in the world is that NOT the design? Not having the baton lock creates danger for the wielder through unpredictability, shifting weight, and inaccuracy! It boggles my mind that it isn't actually designed the way it's clearly meant to be designed.

Unfortunately, all you were able to do against a knife user in a training scenario is block....as you had no training baton w/a handguard. I've found a baton to be one of the most effective LE weapons for combat scenarios within arms reach. When I used two I employ them as I would two short swords or w/one folded along my support-side forearm while the strong-side is poised to strike....two expandable PR-24's would be ideal but w/ Tactical Batons the support-side holds one in "reverse grip".

Knife wins only as a surprise, easily to hide weapon, or while held by someone who can be way better than someone using the baton. I was surprised you let yourself attack like that. • better having it than nothing hehe, and ill make the first strike if I'm sure and positive that I'm in danger, safest would be to disable or damage their ability to harm then run. I will not wait for back up.

  • Saw a very thin three section steel walking stick today 👀🤔. Almost looked like a "tactical baton". L- shap small grip / possible hammer point. Rubber base ( possible hidden point /ice pick point for use in ice ). If this is spring actived ? It's an excellent walking aid could be legal because the design is aimed at a mobility aid. I'd welcome it instead of carrying a stick that can scare dogs and I may not need it but it's in my hand (in my way )

  • Seems like training to dodge is way more effective than just having the guard with no training.

  • If you are only blocking trying to catch the blade of the knife with the baton of course you will get hit, I get this was a sparring test but the techniques and focus were wrong. This is a blunt weapon is meant to break bones, do not try to block something so small as a knife, strike it instead, aiming at the hand or arm that holds it, and keep your distance you have a longer reach.

  • Really annoying that they SHOW the one with the Guards, then zoom in to SHOW the "Automatic" open feature that is on a Completely Different baton. STOP IT - It Makes you look Bad. The one with the Guard Does Not Come with Auto-open Feature. But it is a Very Nice Baton. If I bought another one I would go with the Medium length. I went long and it is a Monster. Would also think about the Auto-open baton but they do not seem to sale it. Edit: and the guard Cannot be Removed. Least not that I figured out.

  • It is like crossguard on some messers, short but with the side protection, it is not that good in pure defense, but it will protect your hand if you are offensive and attacking opponent or his hand or his weapon because of different angles.

  • of course it is hard to block a small knife with a large bulky object. harder to swing and counter for one, the knife wielder can move faster and stop and change directions much easier and faster. hence why they train you to go after the arm rather then try to stop the knife or deflect it as 99.99% of the time you get cut if you do, where as dodge the knife attack and going after arm lowers risk of being cut. may still get cut but you then have a high chance of disarming them and ending the fight before more cuts/stabs that put you down take place. best bet is to keep your distance against a knife if you don't have a firearm or ranged taster/prepper spray. using a baton best to also go for the arm to get them to drop the knife. a good hit to the arm anywhere really will cause almost anyone to drop the knife and attempt to shield the wounded arm. unless you go around wearing gauntlets and gloves that cannot be cut/stabbed through try to avoid knifes, go for arm if you cannot avoid.

  • Attacking without fear of a counter allowed her to make attacks she couldn't otherwise make without sacrificing her own defense. I understand the point was to show how the guard allowed for several more blocks/deflections than the unguarded baton. It's improbable that someone with a knife would see the person with a baton and continue the fight. The double baton and kendo swords... well in Japan it'd make sense but not in Texas. 🥷🦯🔫🤠

  • Where I live batons are illegal so are clubs, swords, katanas, bats, blackjacks, brass knockels, broom handles, pointed sticks, ice picks, pocket knifes and bricks just to name a few. That's why we carry guns they are literally the only legal weapons we can carry.
