Panelists
Dr. Michael C. C. Adams, Regents Professor of History Emeritus at Northern Kentucky University and author of The Best War Ever, will analyze the triumph of the Good War myth in the last years of the twentieth century, its consequences, and then ebb after 9/11.
Dr. Conrad C. Crane, Chief of Historical Services for the Army Heritage and Education Center at Carlisle Barracks, will discuss numerous myths of the air war, the dangers of monocausal explanations about the defeat of Japan, and the misuse of historical analogies.
Dr. Mark A. Stoler, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Vermont and editor of volumes 6 and 7 of The Papers of George Catlett Marshall, will explore myths about prewar appeasement and U.S. “isolationism,” Pearl Harbor and U.S. entry into the war, the Grand Alliance and the Anglo-American “Special Relationship,” the American role in defeating the Axis Powers, and the impact of these myths on postwar U.S. foreign and military policies.

Memory is the greatest of all liars. Especially when it comes to wars. We idealize it and under-emphasize the harsh realities that are all too stark especially to those on the front lines. Yet we insist on having our heroes and gloss over it.

While I agree that there was a deliberate mindset in place set to leave the Germans and Russians in a bloody attritional stale-mate (or so they hoped), is it safe to assume that an invasion of Normandy would have succeeded had it been slated for 42 or 43? I am not so sure one way or the other but it is not easy to keep out of mind the disastrous Dieppe raid. That said, and as an aside, if one truly wants to understand the Second World War then one should look towards the two Civil Wars which bookended both Europe and the conflict itself. EDIT: Did Brokaw really say that 9/11 would produce a second "Greatest Generation"? Oh, but who raised those of the 'first'? It was the Lost Generation. Behind every "Great Generation" is one that was victimized and stymied and traumatized and used, and so when they inherit the world they either lose themselves completely to that madness or they raise their children in a way which they hope would save them from what they had to go through themselves.

Excellent discussions by each and the best I believe was the 2nd Speaker discussing the Iraq war and lack of cultural mobilization compared to World War II, almost all the burden fall upon our professional soldiers and not upon the nation. I greatly appreciate that part and his discussion of private military companies...he is absolutely correct in explaining that such did not mobilze our people to go to war against terrorism.

With so much disagreement on WWII, has any scholar surveyed the field and tried to bring clarity to all that has been written previously? The scholarship seems to be sprawling a bit. There are books written about the interviews done with German generals after the war. Recently, I have read that they lied in most of what they said.

I think Americans were key to the outcome of WWII and after the war, mainly the rebuild and democratization of Western Europe...
Dr. Stoler had relatively poor arguments on Soviet vs US losses. Own military losses doesn't proof exactly with same rate of war effort. In fact there are lots of reasons to claim that American warfare was ten times more effective than that of Stalin. Which power decimated more Luftwaffe: RAF, Soviet VVS or USAAF? Clear answer: USAAF. It destroyed 80% of German aviation fuel production. Besides 76%of Luftwaffe combat losses were in war against RAF/USAAF.
Agreed. Whenever people (rightly) mention the tremendous efforts of the soviets on the eastern front, they seem to forget about what the 8th air force made possible for all ground forces. It's staggering to think of 26,000 men lost in air combat.
Stalin and his henchmen added much of the gulag and Ukraine forced collectivization fatalities into the ww2 KIA's much better PR to die in battle or starve to death in a fallow field or Soviet prison

WW2 was more or less won by Russians alone. Rest played lip service...
