Quote: "Bruce Lee handles Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris almost as a parent would a young child."

In this video, Bruce Lee says,
"In The Sports Week of the Washington Star printed in Washington, D.C. on August 16, 1970, quote, three of Bruce Lee's pupils, Joe Lewis, Chuck Norris and Mike Stone have between them won every major karate tournament in the United States.
Joe Lewis was grand national champion three successive years, Bruce Lee handles and instructs these guys almost as a parent would a young child, which can be somewhat disconcerting to watch.
It's like walking into a saloon in the Old West and seeing the fastest guy in the territory, standing there with notches on over his gun
Then in walks a pleasant little fellow who said, 'How many times do I have to tell you you are doing it all wrong?' And the other guy listened intently, unquote."

I guess you see now that Lewis, Norris, Wall weren’t as forthright about how good Lee was since their egos were too big to admit that a little guy was a world class martial artist who could fight, being one of the best pound for pound martial arts athlete and fighter they’d ever seen.

  • Bruce Lee used these videos for fight choreography, he also trained with top fighters so he could absorb other styles and at the same time was smart enough to use his vast love and knowledge of fighting to give pointers. I think the idea that Chuck and Joe were his students has been kinda of added on to the lore of all his celebrity students in Hollywood. We’re talking apples and oranges in that scenario. These guys were also instructors and competing pro athletes. Bruce created a commune of fighters , and his energy and the environment he created was intoxicating.

Chuck Norris in all his interview appearances he would always say, "Well, I was a world champion". Yah in point karate. Chuck never mentions to the public the other side of him, the disrespectful side towards Bruce. He lied couple of times about Bruce and was caught and had to give apology letter to Bruce. • So many people are misinformed or uninformed about Bruce Lee and think he was just an actor and had no clue how to fight. When in reality, everything he did and trained for all of his adult life was too take a man out in a life or death situation as fast as possible with the least amount of energy (mental & physical) used. His goal was to train himself to the point that his mental & physical body would automatically do what was necessary in any real life combative situation to control 100% of what happens! If you have ever been in a "real fight" you know that fatigue (both mentally and physically) will take over very fast. I'm not talking about pro boxing or even MMA. I mean when the other person wants to hurt you bad for whatever reason. Maybe it is a woman, a family matter, or they committed a crime against you. These are the times you have to be prepared and that's when it becomes a battle of attrition, decision making, and sometimes it will literally be "life & death" ! I had someone who came to my house and broke all my car windows with a steel pipe in middle of the night during a snow storm (I'm from Wisconsin). I happened to be up and watching TV right by the front window as it happened. My adrenaline kicked in and I grabbed a golf iron and realized I needed to calm down because I was so mad and wanted to get this man so bad I almost started hyperventilating. I've been in a few real fights before, but this was something I NEVER experienced. When someone is threatening your home, property, or family you need to stay as calm as possible and let your training take over. That is so important, and I can't stress this enough! The worst thing you can do is let your emotions take over. You need to do whatever is necessary to eliminate the threat without putting you or your loved ones in harms way! What finally happened is I had my fiance call 911 while I chased this man. He got away (luckily he didn't have a gun!) and the police arrived while I still had the golf iron in my hand, standing next to car in pajamas. The police pointed their guns at me and were gonna shoot! Thank God I dropped the iron and layed in the snow! The officer told me he would've shot had I not complied. My point is every situation is different and you have to be ready and use your best judgment in every situation. Things can escalate from 0 to 100 in a split second and you must keep your wits about you, otherwise, you could be seriously injured or killed if you do not stay calm and let your training take over!

      @brianpearson8106@brianpearson81062 жыл бұрын
    • @@brianpearson8106 @Brian Pearson there is where fans want to believe BLee nearly created Martial Arts or MMA 1) American used to call Karate to nearly every Martial Arts, my guess is because karate was well established so they took it as easy name and easy to sell and ran with it They basically called : Korean Karate to TKD. TSD, HKD etc Norris was a HapKiDo instructor still everyone said he was a karate master. Chinese karate styles as Chinese kempo and some complicated named kung fu styles. Even Ed parker marketed his Chinese style kempo as Chinese karate to later create his own style. And of course karate to nearly any coming from Japan (except Ninjutsu as those mythical warriors have their own rules) but even so we all seen a giant misconception on many American movies , ninjas using Katanas, or butterfly swords, karatekas using kung fu weapons on their Dojo, kung fu fighters using nunchucks, back then general public didn't knew much about MA, so many did got away with things that nowadays can be disprove quickly thanks to having internet access. Kung fu , as well as Tai Chi was being practiced in USA even before Lee was born and knows by real Martial Artist before Lee arrived, but unlike other arts it was bit protected from westerners and usually practiced by co local and Asian community ( their kwoon usually where located in or near Chinatown) on many countries the older kung fu school usually is located in Chinatown, where most of the western public wouldn't usually go because it was dimmed of low or too risky area. Basically because the language barrier and the fact that back then was common for instructors to have a non related job on the side. Is ok to be fan, but same as religion when it become blind fanatism is when it becomes wrong and even negative. And about Lee creating MMA or its bases is not real You only need to google Vale Tudo , it's a Brazilian art which basically mixed Martial Arts since 1920 , in america was also know as NHB (No Hold Barriers or some like it) also known back then. Full contact was already used in karate as Kyokushin original rules was with full punch and elbow to face, but later changed to light contact, Gloves and punch elbow to face are not allowed. I admire some things about Lee, but i am more realistic about who and why a person should be admired and treated as an overall icon, and that of course includes how such person interact with the rest and how he lives his personal life (and we all know the other side about Lee) but seems most fans chosen to ignore and or take it as not a big deal. Lee arrived in America in 1959, but by then since 1952 Mas Oyama toured America fighting many styles and bulls as a way to advertise his Martial Art, there where news papers , videos and tv reports about him. I think is clear that America already had a massive share of many Martial Arts well stablish before Lee arrived on 1959. What lee did (thanks to his movie exposition and movie producers paying for his appearance on tv and championships) is to bring showmanship to a country that was natural on money making about everything. So another ascending movie was more than welcomed. Lee was ahead of his time for general western public. They welcomed and swallow his image and some assumed everything he said and did was his original creation. To easterners there was no much new about Lee, same style of Martial Arts movies has been produced before Lee's and his physical demonstrations where not new either, 2 fingers and 1 finger push ups are not new or unknown on many MartialArts styles as they are part of training for fingers attack and grappling techniques (most Martial Arts for westerners specially USA where softened down to be more appealing to the local market and that was admitted and said by first American masters). And "his philosophy " was well recognised as mostly taken off TaoTheChing, Zen and other ancient and very popular schools of thought. But of course Asian movie industry jump on the back of Lee's fame and suddenly we got blessed with a wave of old movies (poorly dubbed, which becamepart of the attractive) and later on new ones with a more refined and westerner oriented mentality and morals, with strangely heaps of look alike and similar name main actors, the most famous was Bruce Lei, he was indeed the most look alike, and many movies used same take and overexagerated displays and moves. Win win for business ,general public (more movies to enjoy) and Martial Arts community attracting more practicants 👍👍 But also created a wave of over inflated ranks, grades and names and fakes, and was the beginning of new styles schoold of fakes, unfortunately that left till now a dark mark on Martial Arts society. But thanks to Internet most now are being exposed, unfortunately new fake ones keep popping up nowadays looking to cash out or get noticed. Back then many used Lee's fame to aid their own enterprises (included some dodgy characters), that's why we hear mythological stories about Lee, after all none of them would tell openly about Lee's addictions and problems because it will affect negative on their own careers, so bets to fabricate positive fantasies and be loved for Lee's fans and get media attention towards myself or my business than say something that can ostracise them from what is their livelihood. Of course many western movies back then didn't really put too much effort to stick close to the real thing (imagery and cultural side of the styles) and we had Ninjas with katanas and wearing hakamas, karatekas with butterfly knifes, KungFu fighters with nunchucks, and terrible poor techniques and fighting scenes that we (practitioners or any Combat sport or Martial Arts) know are as valid and logic as the final battle of Neo in Matrix or Rambo epic shoot outs. I drop a question to everyone one that replies or post here. How long and where you practicing JKD? And if other style ,why not JKD ? I've started my practice when i was 7 years, learn and taught 3 styles of Karate, also trained in kung Fu and got my hand on other styles (but not as serious training more of a random meeting with other instructors to share knowledge)and after over25 great years i had to stop , but this year will return and planning to go to my roots and add Tai Chi Chuan to valance my practice. I admire some things about Lee, he wasn't why i went into MA and as a grown up i learnt more about Lee and it put me on a crossroad with friends as i do have a more realistic aproach to BLee and his legacy .

  • It's fascinating that Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis and Mike Stone were all three point karate champions in the age when they did not use protective equipment. And then that Joe Lewis was also champion of full contact kickboxing. Fascinating still that Norris trained world champion point fighters as well, like John Natividad and Howard Jackson, for examples. Bruce Lee never fought a point karate match, nor a full contact match, and I'm at a loss to think of anyone he trained who was a point karate or full contact champion. And Bruce Lee was the first to show all these guys full contact back in 1967, when they were all point sparring. Truth is BL was sparring full contact way before. Yeah, he never fought professionally, I'll admit that. But he was leagues ahead of these guys. Not even Mike Stone I believe ever did full contact. Only Joe Lewis, in 1970, did the first American kickboxing full contact. And when he won the championship he accredited "the late great Bruce Lee" as father of American kickboxing. Dan Inosanto also sucks, Ted Wong sucks. There's a lot of bad JKD guys out there. In any case, Chuck Norris never truly fought. Anytime post 1970 was where full contact became a thing forreal. I do JKD, I'm one of the few who go around and spar thai boxers, mma guys, and even wrestlers, and boxers. Needless to say, I've had much success representing Bruce Lee's art. If I didn't give these guys a hard time, I would've quit JKD years ago.
