Riley reads off of a teleprompter almost every day, so when Elgato announced their new Prompter, he was excited to see if this could be a potential replacement for our current bulky teleprompter system. Pitched as an all-in-one solution for streamers, will Riley be impressed, or is there a reason companies spend $$$ on professional setups?

  • Considering that professional teleprompters begin at the price point of the elgato and don't include a display I would say this is definitely a solid option for the price

    • It seems that you can't control the scroll though from your laptop - based on this video. So... that's not.. usable, right? Unless you happen to speak at the exact continuous speed, or you go through and manually split your script into a billion chapters, every single time - which is a nightmare lol.

      @Studio19design@Studio19design5 ай бұрын
    • While that lens could work for a fairly close situation like this is intended to be used for, it seems like a fringe choice to me. If you try to accommodate every zoom lens from every manufacturer that can get a somewhat wide angle, you're going to end up with a bulky, absurd product. They probably tested kit lenses and wide to normal primes and figured if those fit, that covered 90%+ of what people would be using with this.

  • Hanging stuff off the lens is a good way to break the lens mount on your camera. As a professional photographer and cinematographer with over 15 years of experience, the way to make this work would be to use a rails system (something simple like a small 15mm rail system would give you the mounting options you would need). Also, the lens shown isn't that long when discussing dslr and mirrorless lenses. Even thinking about my 16-35mm f2.8 Sony GM (an ultra wide lens) and comparing it to this simple f4 super zoom (that is shown), well they're pretty close to the same length. Sure, the super zoom is slightly longer but it's also skinnier. TLDR: like all of Elgato's product line, it works well enough for non-professionals or for twitch streamers but it's not a product that would survive in a production environment.

    • This really shouldn't be a concern... the prompter weighs 690g, while a 400/f2.8 lens comes at about 2.8 kg and 600/f4 3.1 kg (Canon EF). And unlike the prompter, the lenses get waved around, snag on stuff and receive all kinds of knocks and bumps while out on a shoot. If this was an issue, all the wildlife photographers would be walking around with broken cameras. Lens mounts are incredibly sturdy, especially on higher-end bodies.

  • I would really advice against hanging the prompter on the lens without any support, you can mess the helicoidal inner guts, get the inner lens barrel misaligned, etc. Which can create all sorts of issues in the future (from misaligned focus plane to the focus mechanism getting stuck) Lenses aren't designed to have so much weight hanging from the front. Elgato should be wary of recommending using the prompter without support hanging from the lend like that as it can lead to customers asking for repair if this way of using the product damages their costumer lenses.

    • I wish that was all covered - I'm not buying because it's not clear how to remote control the thing as far as manual scrolling. Seems like laptop doesn't work (Riley couldn't make it work, except for chapters), and I'd like clarity on which StreamDeck works and what the differences are etc before spending $500 (total) on this thing lol
