Elon Musk's surprise trip to Beijing is "a watershed moment" for Tesla, says Dan Ives, managing director and senior equity analyst at Wedbush Securities. He says that the visit is an important opportunity for Musk to unlock Full Self-Driving (FSD) in China, which "is the golden goose" for the carmaker. Ives speaks on "Bloomberg: The China Show."

  • Premier Li Qiang personally rolled out the red carpet for Tesla and Musk when he was Shanghai chief. He gave Tesla lots of facilities including cheap land, electricity, water etc and various licenses in record time. He even helped Tesla hire hordes of workers for its gigafactory. Musk could not have picked a better horse to work with there.

  • I want to clarify my opinion one more time as a broken record. Tesla FSD and other companies' FSD is a technology for Generation BETA and beyond. Those generations are home body work force and lazy drivers who want everything delivered to them. The baby boomers to the generation Alpha are stuck and spoiled to the gas cars. The current regulators are old school and will delay this technology as much as possible. In summary, the current generation is the genie pick for the FSD. Musk China's visit is to expand DOJO's knowledge of the FSD in a crowded pedestrian environment. The last thing to know is that regulators are controlled by politicians.

    • If you look at many Chinese EVs, they are copies of the Model 3. Look at the Xiaomi S7 that just launched, the dash is a carbon copy of the Tesla UI. Who are now ordering the giga-casting machines Tesla uses? The Chinese manufacturers. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. If you are going to copy then do it from the best. EU manufacturers should be doing the same instead of wasting money bribing politicians. However whilst Tesla continues to innovate then they will continue to have something to offer China. That's what keeps them safe there. Phillip.

These European brands also have their own EV lineups in China. While Tesla may have an advantage with their FSD technology, they do not enjoy the same premium reputation as the others.

  • Dan Ives, I think, holds financial stake in Tesla stock and some of his conclusions verge on wishful thinking. Tesla needs to tread very carefully in China because this is an inveterate mercantilist state that doesn't play by the rules. The only way to take on and supplant China is to soar way, way above them. We leave that for Pan.

    @MichaelKay-lp3hn@MichaelKay-lp3hn17 күн бұрын
    • Dan Ives is a well known long term investor in Tesla Stock. Elon has always trod carefully in China but also note that Tesla is the ONLY foreign car manufacturer there. Every other foreign car manufacturer is forced into a JV with a local Chinese company. China is smarter than the USA, welcoming Tesla, rather than Biden that wants to destroy them. Phillip.
