When you walk out in about in the wild, you could hear all the different pokemon cries and it sounded like being outside in nature. If you recognized a certain cry, you might get excited as you ran around looking for that pokemon. It was cool to see my Infernapes wild spirit for battle as he sat there roaring in his enemies face waiting for me to tell him to attack. Then you have my casual Espeon who was like sitting there meowing haha

  • The main thing I see in this game is potential. Everybody is talking about wanting a Legends Celebi/Unova-Dragon but I hope this series will not restrict itself to medieval stuff. Imagine a gritty 1960s style Kanto where you infiltrate Team Rocket lead by Madame Boss searching for Mew or a future Hoenn where space travel is an integral part of the gameplay and you uncover the secrets of Deoxys.

Whenever supply ran dry, I used cash I had lying around to patch up the hole in Pokeball supplies until I had the materials in good numbers again. Also, there were material types I never used so I was selling those wholesale for extra funds.

    • @@DistantKingdom I think it may come down to the playstyle. Judging by what you said, compared to my playtime you blitzed through the game both times. I don't remember how many hours I clocked by the time I beat Volo but it was significantly more than 20. I explored all areas really extensively on first visit with high dex completion, so by the time I hit Icelands, I was rank seven, I think. It just felt natural to do it that way. And because I was spending so much time at once in one part of the map, I didn't run into issues with Distortions, either. I've run into a lot of them. Plus, I was being pretty conservative with balls, I suppose? Idk. The side effect of this playstyle though was that I only found out that Outbreaks are a thing that exists from online coverage. Because I often would be mostly done with an area on the first visit, I've never encountered one until I started specifically looking for them. That was first playthrough. On the second playthrough, I wanted to just run through it as fast as possible which made grinding for ranks an annoying requirement. Still no cash issues though. Perhaps because I kept catching to minimum? I dunno. I mostly just wanted to face Volo with a single Scizor.

  • I think the money and resource management is a nice new challenge and added layer to the gameplay loop. I liked figuring out how to optimize doing multiple objectives at once, and getting by on what I had. Things are expensive on purpose - you can stop and grind for stuff if you want, but if you're trying to be fast and tactical, like your gameplay style seems to be, it's gonna be harder, like using under-leveled pokemon.

  • I can’t believe you didn’t talk about the lack of a mini map! It was very frustrating to have to open the full map every time I needed to know where I was. And it didn’t help that the button you use to open the map cannot be used to close the map. You have to press a different button to close it. Another thing that was really frustrating is when you die in a Noble battle, it asks you if you’d like to continue, and “no” is where the cursor starts at, causing you to have to move the cursor to select Yes. Then, it asks if you’d like to continue from where you were in the battle, or start all the way over with the boss at full HP, and the full HP option is where the cursor starts at!!! So you then have to move the cursor to indicate that you’d like to start from where you left off. Absolutely frustrating game design when you’re already losing at a boss battle and are angry.

  • It's weird. There's so much more that can be done, but as an immersive sim that makes you follow consistent rules, it was exactly what I needed. The Noble Pokemon were intimidating, the Growlithe's story was touching, and there's these little touches that do make wild Pokemon unique to encounter and interact with. Hell, Arceus's speech to you at the end was inspiring and heartwarming. It feels like a lot of the things you considered "not the game" was the intended game Game Freak was selling. Obviously the story loop wouldn't appeal to everyone, but seeing all these characters and speculating on what modern characters came from their bloodline...it was great for me, and I'm a lore junkie. I dunno, maybe I'm that wackadoo that thinks needing to punch the jukebox to make it play gives it more character instead of a normal person reaching in and fixing the faulty gears.

  • 25:51 I also found the graphics disappointing and almost made me leave the game because I felt ripped off by the company. The hexagonal trees, the shadows, the grass... rowlets eyes (in the close up when you get you starter you can see how polygonal they are). But the cherry on top was when I made the Chimeco side quest. When you find him and the old lady asks him to be her Pokémon you can see how it has a mirror texture, reflecting the landscape. It's a great detail, and it's so sad to know we could have had a beautiful game, but they just don't care.

Also Burmy and Wormadam models suggest they're dangling from trees, but in practice they're just dangling from thin air. Let them dangle from trees when you smack them out of one and let Pokémon go on the ground. Apart from that, I really enjoyed Arceus and I'm tempted to do a second play through which is something I'll never say about Sword and Shield.

On the top right there's pictures of the characters and the enemy which indicates who will move each turn. If let's say Tidus uses haste then it'll show how many additional turns Tidus will have. Sorry if I'm explaining it poorly in FFX its illustrated quite clearly who moves on what turn and the affects of slow and haste.

  • Funny how a majority of the complaints are features related to resource-management... It's a new flavor added to the franchise, and I for one like it. It forces you to prioritze on collecting specific items rather than hoarding everything inside a portable black hole. People criticize the Resident Evil games for the same thing, and they are all missing the point. It's resource-management. Also, I never had a problem with money in all of my three playthroughs so far. The prize you get from cathcing mons and actually doing the research tasks outpaces the costs of buying items, and you should never be buying balls or potions in the first place. If you prioritize which items you collect in your catching outings, you will always be in a surplus. The thing that bothered me was simply the lack of trainer fights. The few you get aren’t enough to allow for some real challenges in the game. I really enjoyed the clans’ way of battling, feeling like horde battles with actual decision making. I see no reason why there couldn’t have been other Corps members out on patrol who would’ve offered to have a friendly match. Sure, they imply that you’re the reason people come to stop fearing Pokemon, but it’s also clear that members of the corp are already attempting to befriend and train Pokemon before you get isekai’d into hisui.

  • I absolutely loved this game. And while you raise some points that are honestly really great and I'd love to see them (like the skill trees for example) I feel some are definitely there, you just need to play the game slower. To me, this game rewards exploration, curiosity, and wanting to inmerse yourself in the game. Its true, when the dialogs are unskippable and there is no voiceover, it's sometimes tedious, but honestly, I enjoyed it. A lot of times when you spoke to a random villager, it ended up giving you a "hidden quest", a quest that was not previously marked on the map, and you could even evolve the wurmple from the guy if you spoke to him even once more at a later stage of the game. A grandma ends up adopting a chimecho as a wind chime, and the constructor's bidoofs keep moving around while the village develops. I'd have loved for these things to be expanded, but oh well. If you play the game slowly, and try to catch pokemon without going in a frenzy throwing 10 pokeballs at the same time, you'll find that you end up with a substantial amount of money, but once again, you have to sink time into it. Its a bit of a bummer for poeple that want to speedrun the game or advance as fast as possible, since the game is effectively "star-locked" like you said, needing certain stars to progress though. Also, something you didn't mention and I think was a pretty neat thing, was that while in combat, you could either swap pokemon or throw a pokeball with the R2 like in the open area, without navigating the UI, or even run away from the pokemon by moving far from the battle, instead of pressing B. This was amazing to discover, and it tethered the combats with the world even more. So to finalize, yeah, the game could have been SO MUCH MORE, but even only this much is miles better than the last couple generations, and was such a breath of fresh air for the franchise

  • You hit basically all the points in this one. Though I will say I only really struggled with money super early on. Once you get your research/star level up you make way more money for catches, and catching alpha pokemon becomes easier the higher star level you are. Alphas always drop valuable exp items or other loot you can sell, and when you release them from the box they give grit items which can also be sold. Basically so long as you don't miss too many pokeballs you will always profit. Backstrikes and other modifiers also increase how much money you get (like catching 10 pokemon before turning in your research).

  • A few comments about the battle system. Your action order (who moves next) is determined greatly by the speed of your pokemon and the priority and power of the move. A low power/ high priority move will use less action points, thus potentially giving you more turns, whereas a high powered move will use more action points thus potentially giving you less turns. It also depends on the speed of your opponent and what moves they use as well. Understanding this system was what allowed me to beat Volo without items or legendaries. I would use an agile-style Quick Attack which would deal chip damage and give me more turns. And I would use the last turn on a strong style attack. There was a video by a recent nuzlocker who used a Lopunny (a fast pokemon) and had it use Quick Attack to get himself 5 turns consecutively against Volo. I honestly loved the battle system. I could no longer just have a higher level or use speed boosts to instantly beat multiple pokemon. It made me change my approach to encounters in the game, and I really appreciate that.

I would have far preferred their own Origin form that is based on whether they hold their respectove items, and that would add some lore. Like we discover the Lusterous and Adamant orbs are now damaged or something I dunno Spiritomb was not nearly as bad for me as it was just the classic collectathon/Skulltella side quest. • To “complete” the Pokédex you needed to get the Ball symbol next to the name on the list so that the text description in the entry shows up on every single mon which requires roughly level 10 dex level. In most mon cases it’s normally as simple as using the certain move a couple times and catching/evolving between 5-10 mons each, but for harder to obtain mons like legendaries and certain evolutions, the path of least resistance (and/or only option) would be grinding out the move usage part of the requirement which can take a whole for some mons that only have like 1 of those entries as move tiers only provide 1 point towards the dex level IIRC whereas in most cases with the catch entries you get 2 points.

Heck, I even dreamed of a Pokémon games of Fox Game Engine from MGS5! Too bad, we are not living in that kind of universe.
