  • 65 comments so far, and only 3 or 4 negatives that apparently didn’t understand the purpose of the video: that a highly trained dog is still first and foremost a dog, and is entitled to run and sniff around in a new environment with his master (while respecting leash laws and other owners). Excellent video, needed to be said. Thank you!

  • Beginner dog trainer over here had it totally wrong!! I thought that “understanding leash pressure” meant that this sort of walk would be poorly considered! So fun to watch you get yanked around a bit-all in good fun!! Huge relief to know we can totally relax like this!! THANK YOU for posting this one-and thank you for always being real🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

  • Great example of allowing the dog some freedom and the chance to smell and run! And, yes - always keep aware of your surroundings so you are not caught off guard. Great video! Dogs need to relax sometimes and I totally agree. Then when you work, the dog knows that it is time to work. As the owner/handler, the dog is better balanced with a calmness when he can relax sometimes. I love it!

  • Wow I absolutely loved this! I think most people are like me and love seeing him pull you all over the place and wrap the leash around trees and things! It reminds us that dogs are dogs and its ok to sometimes let him be one! Plus we see you have so much control over him all the time that I think we forget that hes just a dog, and even a well trained dog like him will still pull you all over the place if you let him! It was fun to just see you casually out with him like this, in a non-training and non-working setting! Thank you for making me and my dogs feel normal! Btw I find myself doing the "behind the back" thing multiple times and have had to get really good at it, esp walking more than one dog at a time they get all twisted up if I dont stay on top of things!

  • You are WONDERFUL! My GSD has had 3 offleash do encounters in my neighborhood! My GSD is dog reactive and every time I make progress, another off leash dog sets us back. (Just started with a trainer in my area.) In this video you gave me another way I can handle my dog in that situation - using the slip lead. I didn't think of that. THANK YOU!

It’s so simple and natural to give your dogs what they need and at the same time stay in the position of “the leader”people got used to see you. To everyone against this methods of giving a break and some freedom/rather fun time to your loved ones ( as in my opinion the same rule applies to your kiddos :) ) it only helps to build trust and strong connection between you and your dog. Thumbs up for being honest and brave to share your love and understanding of other creature. Cheers

My dog is old and neutral to other dogs and gets very tense if they approach him. I've started being very proactive in defending him. Last week I had to kick a small dog TWICE that charged us and the owner said "sorry he's normally nice!". Great but do you like it when random strangers rush up and try to buck up on you??? It's not nice!! I tear them up for not having a leash!

Try holding back 6 Sibes cause brave Fifi thought she would try standing in front of the team saying far enough folks. All the while 220lbs is standing on full brake being dragged closer and closer to fifi with me screaming at the lady to gab her dog before it becomes lunch. She did, thankfully. That would of been messy right near the public school. Great chapter but glad all 15 years of it are over.

  • Without being disrespectful although it's great to see you both enjoying yourselves, l can't understand why the dog is pulling you all over the place if he is "highly trained " l Am also a dog trainer and my dogs or dogs I've trained would never pull no matter where we are. Not sure if the Law in that park is leads must be on? Maybe l missed something. I let my dogs off lead as soon as they are ready for it.But l only allow my dogs to move out away from me so far unless l send them out. They won't and don't want to be that far away from me . I don't train my dogs to compete just real world stuff moving in woodland, fields, parks , car parks (lots) but if on lead l train them never to tighten the lead up or pull me no matter where we are or what distraction they encounter while out. I have watched a few of your videos and credit where credit is due very very good from a working competition point of view. But surprised that doesn't extend to the outside world which is what 95% of dog ownership is. All the best!

  • If he wanted him to slow down and walk slow next to him, he would as he is well looked after and gets lots of training very often indeed. If he didn’t get trained much then it would be an issue but that is not the case here. That’s why he wants him to pull.

  • I guess it all depends, regarding the retractable leash. I’m no dog trainer but personally I’m not a fan of retractable leashes. My dog is not allowed to be reeled in and let out like that! My friend had her lab on one of those leashes in an unpopulated area and WHAM, out of nowhere around the corner bush , came a person jogging with her dog on a leash. The other dog started jumping all around she got wound up in the retractable, falling down and breaking her arm and injuring her hip. For the average lay person Id say NO on those leashes. That’s just my personal opinion. I just don’t want my dog to think that’s it’s ok ANY TIME to run around when he’s connected to a leash. If they’re that well trained just let them off the leash! You say “if you do it right.” That’s probably very true but the average person I see out walking their dogs with retractable leashes DONT use them right Just my opinion

  • This is basically what those people who buy a working breed without realising what they're getting into end up with 😁 I agree with you by the way. I have a perfectly well-behaved dog when I WANT her to be. But sometimes I like to let her go be a dog. It's healthy. I use a harness though.

  • Ok, been wondering about this for hiking because trails are so narrow. His heel is just ok. My trainer said no, not to let him go in front because his heel will get worse. Is this true? We just want to enjoy a hike without always correcting him, can’t be enjoyable for him. But, I also don’t want to mess up what training I have. What do think I should? No hiking until heel is better or hike, have fun and keep working on it?

    • My dog and I are at a similar stage. We heal walk on sidewalks around neighborhoods. I have used a slip leash and a buckled flat collar to keep him at my knee for that and I allow sniffing but with moderation. When we beach run it's completely different. He wears a harness and is clipped to my belt with about 8 ft of line. He pulls me, and orbits around me but I call him 'close' if we pass within 40ft of other dogs. We haven't figured out trails runs yet but I'm certain I want him in front of me. Probably belt clipped and on at least 5 ft of leash so I don't run into him if he stops. He knows we're doing different things, and figures it all out (eventually). He's 13 months this week.

    • When we get to a grassy area, I clip his leash to a different collar and say, Sniff. When it’s time to move on I say, Done. He is getting better at that. It is all a lot to try and figure out sometimes. I am having a hard time figuring out what to do when he all of a sudden dive bombs a scent when we’re walking. He pays no attention to leave it then, very hard to get him off of whatever he smells. Sounds like you and your dog are off to a good start, Joe.
