A HAUNTINGLY Beautiful TIME-TRAVEL Through the CHATEAU Archives - Journey to the Château, Ep. 172
In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart go through more of the old photography negatives that are part of the chateau archive. This batch of photos reveals a more personal look at a previous family of the chateau, and reveals some unknown discoveries of the chateau and its gardens. Patrick and Stuart show and discuss plans to reinstate some of these lost features of the chateau. The Château de Colombe document archive dates from starting in the 1500s, and the photo archive includes glass plate negatives starting from around the 1890s.

Don't you simply love old photos? Colombe's photos are a treasure trove for you. Seeing the faces in the photos makes one have to wonder what the life journey was for each. They look like a very happy family. Eager to see others that you have. Good luck Stuart making ALL of those gates. Patrick will be happy to plant the flowers!! HUGS
😂😂. I am ordering the roses right now 🤣😂🤣. Like you, we always wonder about people’s life stories and what happened. They seem incredibly happy. Hugs to you Vicki. ❤❤❤
How special to see these precious pictures, and to have them in your care. It actually brought me to tears to see all the love and happiness of the children and family members…no wonder you felt a strong attraction to the Chateau- all of that positive energy in your new home. Now you get to carry that on.🥰 Stuart you did a beautiful job on this video- thank you for sharing.
Can I just say that I absolutely love your comment? I do ❤❤❤
Oh my Lord , Stuart , this is what I have been waiting for. I felt like a time traveler with the beautiful music & incredible photo's with past beautiful souls. I'm not going to lie I was in tears watching. Bravo and thank you. Patrick I think there is a sign you need two donkey's .
Hi Karen. Now, I never see the vlog before it becomes live. Like you, I was in tears. Just touched my heart. Stuart is incredibly talented. I have to thank you…… I agree…… two donkeys it is. Huge hugs. ❤
Love you both so much and do not even know you , but I do know two beautiful souls when I see them & thank you so much for sharing.@@patrickjourneytothechateau9452
Yep got me all choked up as well 😢💕🇦🇺💕
Oh my goodness, Stuart, you knocked it out of the park with this one. Your choice of music and editing was top-notch. Brought all those faces of the past back to life. I totally loved your montage. Almost gave me chills, in a good way. Looking forward to seeing more photos.
Thank you Angela. I even had a bit of moist eyes….. He is just amazingly creative. Hugs ❤
You both are the new 'Stewards', of the chateau
@@dorisnewirk5916 thank you. It is a big responsibility and a wonderful opportunity
Knowing the history of your Chateau is priceless
Hi Angela. We are truly lucky to have the archives and negatives. Love them. Hugs ❤
A++++ grade on this video! I loved the way you put it together, referencing where they were in the photos. Life in the past brought back to life. Just wonderful ❤
Thank you so much. Stuart is a fountain of creativity. I was almost emotional watching the video. Truly brought it back to life. Love from Colombe ❤
the photos were marvelous and to compare to today is priceless
Thank you so much. That is all Stuart’s creativity. Love it too ❤
Enchanting little girl in the photos, great quality after all this time and so lovely to see that their dogs were very much part of the family. 😊
Isn’t she a darling. And the little boy as well. So true. What fantastic quality of photos Stuart got from the negatives. We too loved that the dogs were part of the family. Hugs❤
How absolutely beautiful! What a wonderful way to honour the family who lived, loved and played in the house where you are now doing the same. Loved this vlog....as I always do.
Thank you so much. Stuart is so creative and he did an amazing job. I loved how he put this together. Huge hugs ❤❤
How beautifully said! I completely agree!
Beautifully done, Stuart!
I loved it too. Wish I had Stuart’s creativity ❤
Such a fantastic gift to see the chateaux all those years ago. Amazing. Xx
Thank you Helen. I agree with you. Amazing😊
Loved how the photos went from color to black and white then previous family members were shown in various locations on the land. Thanks for posting and sharing. I so enjoy your posts.
The old photos and the way you were able to superimpose them to the current time is lovely. Thank you both so much. ❤
Thank you so much Deirdre. That is all Stuart and his incredible creativity. Very much appreciated ❤❤❤
What beautiful children who used to live there! I imagine the family’s descendants if they watched this, would be filled with joy in how you’ve resurrected and honoured them! History in pictures! Thank you.
Stu is a distinguished gentleman. I bet he’s adorable in the morning. And what a precious archive!
This is why old buildings are so magical. So many layers of human history.
Oh Stuart what a fantastic job you have done on this photo presentation showing us the transition of what you have now to how it was in the past. What a treasure trove that has remained and you are just scratching the surface of these archives, priceless! Reinstating the chapel bell, garden, fencing and gates will be so awesome. I love being on this "Journey to the Chateau" with you both, so so much fun. Hugs to all and stay well.
Can you imagine how happy these souls would be because you are taking care of and restoring their home, Chateau Colombe? Bravo and carry on!!
I really enjoy the old photos. It's so nice that you have photos of the families who also loved your chateau. One of the best things about your channel, (besides Patrick's wonderful sense of humor), is that you are trying to preserve the history of it, and that you are making as much as possible reversible. I also always enjoy your cooking shows!
Hi Kathi. Thank you so very much. You are truly kind and generous with your praise ( and I love it ) 😉. Being able to relate to people who lived here before us is amazing. I promise I’ll be back to cooking regional dishes again soon. Hugs and love from Colombe ❤❤❤
Wow, what a great job you did placing the old photos into today's setting. Very clever! I love the idea of rebuilding the tower to house the large bell. Gosh you have a lot of jobs to do if you want to bring it back to it's original state, but so exciting! Well done guys!!!!
Stuart did truly an outstanding job. I wish I was half as creative as he is 😉🥰. We’d love to have the bell reinstated on the chapel. How fantastic that would be. We need to clone ourselves or start recruiting volunteers. 😊. Huge hugs ❤
Lovely as always. ❤ Brilliant, the way you set the scenes with modern pictures of the areas, then transition to the old. I would imagine it would have been a big deal for people to have a camera back in the day. Just fascinating! They seemed to be genuinely happy together. So many smiles, which you don’t see a lot in old photos. Thank you for sharing these. I look forward to seeing more. Big hugs to you both. ❤❤
Hugging you two as well. True. Not many people seem to be happy way back then and there are hundreds of them smiling. Lucky chateau! Stuart is so incredibly creative. Loved the video too. Can’t wait for you or see this for yourself ❤❤❤.
It's amazing that you have all those photographs, looking back on time , to see the originality 😊
❤❤
Wow! This vlog was so "wonderfully prepared" - loved seeing the chateau so long ago - the chapel in the background - with bell tower - the children as they grew up..ALL LOVELY..Great job Stewart..well done.
He did do an outstanding job. Hugs my dear ❤❤
It was like watching the children grow up. Thank you.
Hi Penny. Saturated said the same thing. Amazing to have this legacy. ❤
Just love history!! Especially when you can put old photos with what it looks like now. Remarkable!! Lots of love from Tennessee!!
Thank you April. So one of you. Like you, I find this so very interesting. Love from Colombe ❤❤
The photos of the children are absolutely charming. Thank you.
Love to see/learn more of the chateau's history.🥰
Thank you my dear John. We do too. Hugs ❤❤
Whatever Patrick says, I don’t believe you could look anything other than handsome even first thing in the morning Stuart!!! What an idyllic childhood those children seemed to have had.
Indeed. He does. See, this is where my dyslexic self pays a compliment (he can’t look as old as the photos) and no one understand them 😂😂😂😂. Oh nooooo 😮😊😮. Those children had an amazingly loving and happy.
Stuart your montage with the fading to black and white was so perfect for transporting us to another era in the chateau's life. I loved the photos, they were all so full of life, and a family's life well lived at the Chateau de Colombe. Thank you so much for the time you took to share the photos and information so thoughtfully! Loved it!
Hallo Patrick und Stuart, die alten Fotos und wie Stuart sie mit neue Bildern arrangiert hat war toll.Ich freue mich schon auf weitere Folgen.Grüsse aus Deutschland Conny❤
I can look at old photos all day long. Love to compare what’s shown in them to what exists now.
I just watched this episode and I have to say you have out done yourself. Just beautiful.
Hi sweeties. The old pictures give a nostalgic feeling to the Chateau. Seeing the family grow during the years is so sweet. I can imagine the gate between the chapel and wall. I hope in the future you can restore the garden and gates. It will give the Chateau a more grand image. Looking forward to see more pictures. You're both are looking more relaxed and happy👌 Hugs and kisses also for the furries 🥰😘❤️😊🐕
Hugs and kisses. You are absolutely right ❤
It looks like the family before we're happy and loving..,good vibes...love these old photos...
That's so great to have all those pictures to look back on and get so much information on the chateau and the families that once lived there.
Thank you Jerry. It is truly a gift to have them and being able to see it through the eyes of people from 100 years ago and to see their happiness. ❤❤❤. Hugs my friend
@@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 I was wondering what year or time period these photos were from..so they started around 1920s? Fantastic job Stuart, putting them together. Looking forward to more on the next video. Thanks
Brilliant job of bringing the past alive, Stuart. Very well done. Thanks.
the photos create a resonance of the past that I think we can all relate to.👍
I'm typing through my tears to say how wonderful it was the way you presented each photo and led us from the same perspective today back to when the photo was taken. The music really allowed my mind to connect and follow. You did such an amazing job stirring the emotions and appreciation of the lives that moved through that space and are now gone except for what you are preserving. You have a great talent and heart. Thank you.
Thank you so much! ❤️
The photos were wonderful. The clothing looks like they were taken in the 1920-30. Thanks for sharing and preserving history of the chateau.
Considering that photography was still expensive at that time (early 1920s judging from the fashion) the family had a fairly large collection of just 'snapshots' which is fantastic. You should have some of the photos to be blown up as reference for Davy or whoever will help you plan the gardens and some just as memento for the rooms. A beautiful gift from the past.
Just wonderful! What treasures you have. I just looked at those children and imagine them running through the chateau, up and down the stairs, the dog running through the yard where your adorable dogs run now. Very exciting and thank you for sharing. 💕
Oh my goodness how beautiful these photos are ❤❤❤
Loved the amazing photographs! Thanks for sharing them with us! ❤️
Thank you Rita. Stuart did an amazing job putting this together. Hugs ❤
Wonderful editing. The dissolves from modern days to old were particularly fascinating. À bientôt!
Hi Brian. Thank you so much. All the work is Dtuart. Hugs from Colombe 😊
What an incredible montage of old photographs that tell the story of your chateau!!! So very interesting!!! 🥰🙏🎶❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🏰🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Thank you so very much. Stuart and his creativity made this an almost emotional vlog for me. Loved it ❤
How magnificent to have these old photos of this beautiful family ..Having this history is incredible…Thanks for sharing…
That was rather interesting seeing the old photos of the château and past residents. My favorites were the little boy and girl in the cutest outfits.👼 Thanks for sharing. ❤ from TX!
Wonderful Stuart love the old and new shots at the same place it's also like the chateau is showing you things great volg guys cheers
Thank you! 🥰
Cheer and thank you so much. Stuart is so creative ❤❤❤
Guys, I just love it when you do share these photos and information from the former owners. It's such a great find and nice that former owners actually left the historical photos relating to the chateau for reference. I really love the current photo comparisons also. Please continue to do this! Thanks
Hi John. We are really blessed and lucky to have them. Love your comment ❤❤❤. And yes, we will 😊
Well done Stewart. The present/past shots were amazing.
it is an incredible opportunity to have found period photos showing the daily life of the different owners of your home.. they give you clues to possibly reconstruct details of the garden.. how many castles were burned down in the passed by the population and entire families deprived of their history.. a very nice find
Salut Dominique. You are so right. Most newer chateau owners have no historic documents or photos. We are very lucky to bring these people back to life. Love your comment. Thank you very much ❤
The photos nearly brought me to tears such treasures.
A beautiful and fascinating look into the past with reference to the present .😊😊❤
Stuart did a great job. I wish I was remotely as talented. Huge hugs. ❤
Cyd in USA. Hauntingly beautiful time-travel video via photographic magic. It was such a delight I had to watch it twice :-) The music was so perfect.
Thank you so much. That was Stuart’s creativity coming through. Hugs ❤ and glad you like the video 😊
Loved the before and after pics 😁
❤❤❤
Every picture tells a story.. how true, and how lovely to be able to see what the chateau was like to be able to decide if you could do something similar, or not.
Isn’t it amazing? Love your comment❤
Very nice way to show current views with fade in of the b&w photographs! Plus spotting the changes though time! 🙂👍
Stuart did an amazing job. Glad you liked it too. Hugs my friend ❤
You are both looking so wonderful. So glad you are sharing the photos. 😊💕
I really love the old photo's. The people and children look so happy there. You are very lucky to have them and I know you both are going to do a great job restoring whatever you set your minds to. I did notice the steeple on the chapel but had to tear my eyes away from those precious children. To cute!
What a treasure !Now that you’ve seen the photos can you imagine them as they lived in your rooms? They looked like a very happy family - I hope you can still feel their vibes❤️❤️❤️❤️
Old photos hold so many wonderful memories, from formal to the everyday... And some secrets.... I'm the keeper of our old family photos and it's surprising the info. they hold. The old gates with their roses are beautiful, I'm so glad you are going to reinstate them at some point, along with the chapel bell. The little girls could well have been pictures of my Mum with dark hair and her younger sister, with fair. My sister and I didn't know our grandfathers as the passed away when we were very young and Dad's wouldn't tell him anything about his family when asked, after Dad passed and the internet was available, it was a race to trace the family tree. We found our grandfather had changed his last name.... so, it was one person stopped and one started, tracing was then easy. Now, years later, Ancestry DNA has confirmed all we found is correct and who he was. He had come to NSW over the border from Queensland and old photos told the story. There had been a major disaster in the Qld. town after he left, a flood killing over 60, including his brother and his wife, all their children and in-laws in 1916, three years after our father was born. The town had to be moved to higher ground to avoid another flood from the river it was built on. (About 1917 he meet up with his two sisters for studio photos that we have.) Also in 1917, the entire town was moved by traction engines to the opposite side of the lagoon, it was very well documented by the local photographer on large glass plates and later a book was made of the historic images. I have a copy but images are also on the internet. In one photo standing in a line of young men, is one about 16 years old wearing a hat, both hands in his pockets, just like my grandfather would stand in photos... Because plates are so clear, blow this one up... and you would swear in court it was a photo of our father! Photos never lie.... ❤🦘
I loved this episode and the old photographs as well as your observations about changes to the chateau and grounds. Thank you. CH
Hi Connie. It is fascinating to have the references. Huge thank you ❤❤
I loved seeing these photos. You did such a beautiful job. Seeing this loving family, and the chateau now and then brilliant , music and all. Thank you. It brought tears❤
Hello Melody. I too had tears. Stuart’s creative streak came up with this amazing video. I see them when they become online videos, so I am surprised as much as everyone else. I love it that way. Hugs and love from Colombe ❤
Priceless, can’t imagine why you don’t have bigger #s, your one of my favourite Chateaus🇨🇦
Thank you! ❤️
Outstanding! Loved this look back in time! And the music was wonderful!!
I love the photos because it shows a happy family lived there. Rebuilding the arbors will be wonderful.
I feel the same way. Huge hugs ❤
Fascinating discoveries and potential. What strikes me and is so mignon is your Château was lived in by what seems like a happy and loving family! ❤
Great photos, it looked like a happy time for children. Makes you wonder what happened to the children. I imagine they lived through the war. Please more photos.
Yes, the children did live through the war. They are relatives of the family that sold us the chateau.
What a wonderful montage of those photos Stuart you did an amazing job
The photo montage was phenomenal! I was moved to tears. Thank you!
Such a delightful episode! Lovely family! My dear Mother was Catholic, lived in a large home which included several Aunties and Uncles. Every Sunday, the priest was invited to lunch. It was always big excitement and much preparation for the meal. Thank you for sharing this very special past history of your home! See you on Friday! 😘😘💕💕
dit is zo fijn dat jullie de geschiedenis delen bij ons daar word een mens gelukkig van
How intriguing! I love seeing the old photos and just how the grounds were. And, I love watching the children grow!
Absolutely enjoyed seeing the photos and such a great idea to identify the locations, photograph them and show them alongside the old photos - really enjoyed seeing the family grow up 🥰🥰
Hi Tracy. I was so impressed with Stuart’s creativity and idea for this vlog. I loved it. Huge thank you ❤❤❤
That was brilliantly done. Thank you so much!
Stuart is a genius. Thank you for your wonderful comment ❤❤❤
The old photos bring back memories of when I went through my family photos (from my mom’s side) which dated back to 1925….the year she was born. I just wish that there were names on the back of the photos. I know some of the people but not all and sadly my mom passed away 2 yrs ago this September at the age of 97. After she passed, my brothers and I went through (at different times because I live out of state) what she had left as far as photos, memorabilia, etc. to divide up. And that’s when it hit me that I wish she and I sat down to go through and write names on the backs of all of them. I like to scrapbook and I hope to put everything together in a book one day. You definitely have a treasure trove of history, which I’m sure has you looking at your chateau in a whole new light. 🤗😉👍🏻🐶🍷💙🙏
Thank you!💕
Stuart and Patrick I absolutely loved the photos and the views of the Château in the past with the family happily posing What a treat! I'm looking forward to more. I could imagine Tony watching this episode, figuring out how he would create the new bell tower 😂 The garden gates will be something to be admired with roses surrounding them, that will be in between the many jobs you have on your agenda 😊❤ see you soon 😊 ❤❤ 👋
The photos are great, the children look very happy and loved, it was and is a Chateau filled with life and love.
I love the old photos and especially enjoyed seeing the location today melding back into the old photos to show the locations now and then. Really, really fascinating!
Stuart did a wonderful job with the slideshow. It was great the way he showed the current look of the grounds, then faded to black and white and then to the old picture of the same area. The music he choose to go with the slideshow was perfect as well. It was very poignant. Love the old pictures!!!
Stuart, You have made a sublime montage here. I just love the present day color photos fading into black and white then merging into the same location way back when, to contrast the two periods. Perfect music. And maybe the best of all is the choice of photos and chronology. It shows how loving this family must have been. It's as though, while you were handling the negatives, seeing good moments of their life at the chateau, their ever present spirits imbued you with that love for bringing the family's beloved memories forward in time. ❤
Thank you for sharing the old photos.
BEST TO YOU
I absolutely love history. Its so wonderful to see these photos and the matched up photos of the areas. I spotted many things especially the chapel, great job definitely food for thought 😊
Such a beautiful, loving family. The photos are precious. I'm surprised no one from the family took them when they moved out. Thanks for your videos and the wonderful music behind them.
They consider them to be part of the history of the chateau. I am sure they already have their own photos from the negatives. Thank you!
I really enjoyed seeing the old photographs, so interesting to see the people who used to live at the chateau and the original kitchen garden
Love the old photos….lovely flog❤
Herrlich !!! Grüße an euch 2 ;-))
Dear Gents... this was a wonderful episode. Excellent film work Stuart and music selections... it just gave me goose bumps... so impressive and such a positive addition to your historical archives. You both should be very proud of how your hard work is adding to the provenance of the chateau through this research... in addition to all of the hard work you have done renovating and restoring. It was like being an arm chair archeologist watching you both discovering the changes from over the years. Beautifully done you two... thanks very much for sharing.
Thank you!
Loved the video the children were precious!!
Absolutely agree ❤❤❤
I certainly enjoyed the montage of photos, Stuart. I loved how you took "after" shots so we could see the puzzle pieces fall together. Thanks!
How wonderful to be able to see how it was years ago!
A beautiful vlog! Wonderful editing and music. Wouldn't that family be so pleased if they could see the vlog. Will enjoy all photos you share in the future.
Please DO SHARE THE PHOTOS...I love "all that you both offer, or coourse,", but how many people HAVE this reference to "relive" with all those before...just WOW
How exciting! I was hooked after the first photo of the little girl and (presumably) her Mom. What beautiful photos. You have put a lot of work into identifying the different locations and working out the history. Yes, to restoring the gates/pergolas with roses and the steeple on the chapel. Can't wait to see more.
Loved the photos, and the accompanying music was just perfect! Thank you for sharing!
What a treasure of past history you have. Thank you for sharing the photos. I don’t know how to say this but, after decades of time past…..these people pictures are shown around the world. What a thought……I sat and wondered if our family picture will ever be picked up and shown decades from now. The vlog had such an emotional feeling for me. How wonderful you both took the time to share with all of us. And my husband said the way you presented past/present time with the music in the background made it very moving. Thank you
How fun to see the children grow-up. Beautiful editing, Stewart
He did a wonderful job. Huge thank you 😊
Stuart, what a beautiful & poignant montage you created!! Thank you!! 🇺🇸
Oh how we enjoyed seeing these old photos from yesteryear & how nice it was to see these children enjoying their home. They took a lot of photos, didn't they?? Love how Stuart combined the present with the past...amazing!! Looking forward to seeing more in your future videos, and maybe of inside and how rooms were decorated? We have an 1880's home in Virginia, how I wish we could see a historical journey in photos as well!! Cheers to you both!!!! Thank you for sharing 💕
Hi guys, history is amazing. The family looks very happy and the Gardens look lovely and recreating some of it would be beautiful. Cheers ❤️😘🤩🥂
