NMACC GALA 2023 FASHION ROAST (is this really the "indian met gala"?)

2023 ж. 5 Сәу.
526 128 Рет қаралды

The NMACC or Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center kicked off it's first official gala, which had some of the greatest stars of Bollywood and Hollywood converge on Mumbai, India. Designers from India like Rahul Mishra, Manish Malhotra, and Abu Jani Sandeep Khosia all dressed the glitter titans of some of the biggest television and movie series, like Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra as well as Zendaya, Gigi Hadid, Tom Holland, and Emma Chamberlain. It was a wonderful display of Indian cultural dress and fashion, and I'm excited to see what next year brings!

    • I have always adored so many amazing Indian dresses and styles, and there are so many that I've yet to see, given the huge range of cultural blends and variations. I do some embroidery myself so I have huge admiration and respect for the styles and artists behind them. I've noticed that because embroidery is so much more commonly used over there, it doesn't increase the cost of the garment (even with currency conversions etc) like it does over in the west. There's stunning ornate embroidery panels in some Indian pieces that I've seen that would cost a fortune for such detail over here, and yet people are like "yeah that's... just standard embroidery" in India 😂.

    • I’m pretty sure India is about to eat up the international style world. With all the traditional fashion elements they have, when they start mixing that with non traditional styles, and innovating they will DESTROY. Which has already started but so much more is likely coming. I’ve been around the world and Indian style can be touched in terms of opulence.

  • 16:53 Gigi -the saree has Chickenkari embroidery from Lucknow city from India, the saree must be ivory but since stitches are shadow embroidery that is why you have that illusion of different Color. 20:09 Kareena lehnga has mirror embroidery along with thread and French knots 21:21 Saif pants are Jodhpurs, it’s suppose to be bigger on the thigh area ,he is from a royal family so no wonder he went for it. Google Jodhpur pants and you will learn. 24:15 Kriti’s dress is in brocade from Banaras city, Banaras is known for it brocade sarees and it’s rich textile. The yarn was suppose to dip in pure gold and then interweaved with silk yarns. Minimum time to make such saree is 6-8 months depending on the motifs on handloom. Of course it’s been more commercial these days and they are making these in power loom. 29:17 sabyasachi ‘s logo is Calcutta tiger that is on the waist belt. You NEED to go to his flagship store in Christopher street in NY, it’s opulent and you will see the best of India embroidery. That store is an experience!! 32:19 Abu jain Sandeep Khosla brand is known for chikankari embroidery so that kaftan is in Chikankari embroidery along with Muhkesh embroidery, (muhkesh is basically flat metallic thread sewn on the fabric and then beaten to give more like an 3D metallic star look ). too as well as Gigi’s saree. 34:08 jewellery is from Amrapali, from Jaipur. 36:29 Sara’s Lehnga is all embroidered it’s zardoz which is made of fine metal wire and gold thread along with gold beads.all hand sewen. It’s finest embroidered. 37:54 it’s mirror embroidery from Kutch district from Gujarat. 39:34 not my favourite, it’s vintage Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla , this kinda styling used to be in 90’s, not very new and totally boring I am so glad that you did this review, it’s high time India should get highlighted for its heritage ,art and embroidery. ❤❤❤ from 🇮🇳

For anyone interested in it, apart from the usual popular names like Manish Malhotra, Satya Paul and JJ Valaya I suggest looking into brands like Chamaar Studio and Doodlage, as I truly believe so many Indian brands are pushing the envelope in sustainability, ethics and design. Also Bodice and Two Point Two's SS 23 Lakme Fashion Week collections are worth looking at.

I think in the US y’all see more traditional versions of Indian clothing, maybe because they’re passed down from the older generations that immigrated. More modern saris are very much par for the course at weddings etc. here, at least outside super traditional sections of society. Infact due to my interest in handloom, I have been to many exhibitions where the artists have shown their original designs that generations used to weave. They are simple and elegant. The Alia saree is definitely modern. None of the people in 80s 90s wore such saree. I think it’s pretty, but it’s not even saree with that palazzo underneath. You can say ITS inspired from saree and sharara.

  • @Luke- wrt Natasha’s Sabyasachi look- the tiger on the belt is kind of a Sabya identifier/ house code. Often a part of his saree looks in the form of a belt and often also spotted in accessories- clutches. Kriti’s Monisha Jaising deconstructed saree look- the jacquard fabric is a Banarasi saree which is held in high regard in India because in the Mughal times, this fabric was only used to make clothing for royalty. It’s still one of the most expensive saree fabrics because it uses pure silk + gold and silver alloys for the embroidery which often takes several months to complete.

It's so widely loved by his clientele that styling that belt with nearly anything and everything is a hot favourite amongst those who own a piece. • 3:58 - It is a saree. Indian designers inculcate various experimental and innovative elements in the sarees they design as well as how it is draped. Here Alia Bhatt has draped the saree in the most common way that it is worn by Indian women in regular life, so not much experimentation in the draping style - which is good coz the saree material and the contrast of the solid silver and the stripes already bring in the glam and unconventional element, too much draping would have ruined that.

  • Woo! Love Indian fashion! Deepika's muted look was giving me celestial, ephemeral vibes. Gigi's embroidered look was intricate and amazing, she really pulls off the regal saree as well. Natasha Poonawalla's mix of different components was seamless. Sonam's skirt won for me, it showcased so many Indian prints. I've seen a lot of Indian skirts where each panel has a different print but her skirt was so voluminous and took the amount of prints shown to a whole different level. Also like that you mentioned that you're a novice in Indian textiles but are still making a video, you do not need to be an expert from the get go to join in a conversation and have fun with something.

  • 23:57 - The textile used here is Benarasi brocade. In the Mughal era the 'zari' (gold/silver thread) used to be initially made of actual silver and gold plated silver (as far as I can recall gold is too soft to make thread), but later they shifted to silver or gold plated copper as copper threads are stronger. I agree with your assessment of the gown - I don't like it either. The problem is not that the designer has tried to incorporate contemporary elements with a traditional textile - several designers do that and do it well (for example, u can check Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas's wedding reception pics - well, one of the receptions, they had three - Priyanka wore a blie bensrasi lehenga with a corset top) - I feel the problem is that too much is going on, it looks too busy - benarasi in itself is a very elaborate, very intricate, very gorgeous material/textile, u gotta keep the textile in focus by keeping the cut and shape on the simpler, plainer side. It would have been fine if it was a plain asymmetrical gown without all the cut outs and folds.
