I absolutely love how Liam is describing his spellcasting. Its so much more exciting than saying "I cast X". Really helps to visualize it happening and ropes you in
After campaign 1 finished Matt asked the cast to be more descriptive with their attacks, spells and stuff. Rather than just saying "I cast fireball" and leaving it to Matt to describe all the details, they could describe what they did to cast it and then Matt would finish by describing what happens depending on the dice rolls. I think the cast really embraced the idea, especially Liam.
it makes me feel bad about my own spellcasting now, and I'm gonna start being more descriptive in the future
This is why I love component pouch, instead of a wand or a staff. You describe getting the material components, how that translates into the spell and how it works thereafter. My favorite is describing the Haste spell: The material component is licorice root, so you just shove a very sweet thing into the fighter's throat and he gets a sugar rush
I've always made my spellcasters have unique spells like a dwarf cleric that writes in dwarven runes over an injury to cast heals

Such an underapperciated comment
Travis is too damn smart. Grog is still one of my favorite characters, but seeing Travis shine with moments like the confused old man trick was awesome.
My god, in the span of two or three weeks I've become obsessed with this show. I'm 40, and when I was growing up I was not allowed to play D&D, as it was supposedly "the gateway to Satan," but I always wanted to play. So I only ever played a couple of sessions of the old West End Star Wars D6 RPG, but otherwise missed out on all of this. Then life happened and kids and family and RPGs were the furthest thing from my mind. So now my kids are teenagers, and one of the greatest gifts is that I get to play D&D with them, at their invitation! They WANT me to play with them. My oldest son DMs, and I just created my first-ever D&D character. I can't wait for my first game with them this week. So thank you to the Critical Role team for showing me, a late bloomer, how amazing RPGs can be.
How'd it go?
It was awesome. Got my 10-year-old stepdaughter addicted as well; I told her it was like Skyrim, but where you use your imagination and you get to pretend to be the character you want...she was excited to try. Then when my son gestured to her and said, "Why don't you introduce your character," she looked at me with wild eyes as if she was about to skydive, and I knew she was hooked. We got an assignment from a noble, killed an ogre, and did some fun RP. Then this weekend my oldest son was at a friend's for the weekend, so *I* DMed. The five of us played the D&D Starter Set for our adventure (the tried and true Lost Mine of Phandelver), and we played for about three hours. I drew a lot of inspiration from the way Matt narrates and describes the events that happen, and it was great to see the kids really getting into it. The highlight of that was probably that first goblin fight, where two goblins attacked with swords and two with shortbows from a ridge. One of the kids plays a centaur druid (doubling down on the nature magic), and she cast "Ice Knife," which she then chucked at one of the goblin archers with a Natural 20 and hit it right between the eyes. Needless to say she felt like a total badass. But then they spent the last 20 minutes trying out how to free some wolves kept by the goblins. It was really great to watch them try to work together, but I'm realizing I may need to figure out how to gracefully move them along to keep the action going. But we all had a great time!
This is pure
Indeed.

Really? Because to me, as a Brit, it sounded very good indeed but still definitely very much an American affecting a British accent. I mean, not that I could do an American accent any better, and Liam is a VERY long way from the usual American rubbish attempt that ends up sounding like some awful Charles Dickens / Bert the Chimneysweep / Cockney mashup, but it's still very obvious to me that he's not British.

You are truly doing the Lord's work. God bless.
Nott's joke about eating the fae cat and it having "empty calories" was criminally ignored 😂

At 2:56:28 I love how Travis’ face just starts to light up as Matt describes his sword, ngl that was an absolutely badass moment
A year late to this, but simultaneously, you can see Laura looking from Matt as he describes the blade, back to Travis and as he gets excited she just gets the BIGGEST smile on her face. That's love right there.
Finally had the courage to start playing dnd and had my first game today!! It was AWESOME
a year later, i hope youre still able to play
53:45 53:45 53:46 53:47 😊😊
In most things when they plug their sponsors it's obnoxious and people go out of there way to make it not obnoxious, but these guys make it as obnoxious as possible and it's absolutely perfect. What legends.
Alex Lovely your right they just want their sponsors to be recognised as thanks
The difference is the delivery and they don’t try to hide that they have a sponsor. They straight up say our sponsor is blah blah blah and then of course Sam makes them fun. And then they mention them during like whispers or down time as a running gag. They make the adds fun as in I look forward to them at the start of episodes
Sam's sponsor ads in campaign 1 are epic. I'm just starting this campaign and I hope he doesn't start running out of ideas XD
Figgy5119 oh he always finds a way!!
Game grumps does the same thing and it really allows for some enjoyable content when done right
listening to the background music and realizing it's Skyrim battle music like, "wHAT IS IT?! DRAGONS?!" Travis, the voice of Roy Mustang: the lone horse.... is it a... *mustang?*
.. Unfortunately it was a joke to a F(j)ord Mustang, but I originally thought it was a Roy Mustang joke too.
Micah Brown it was both
Sam: "Seeing one of us die..." Matt: "Not dead, just unconcious." Sam: "No, dead forever!" Caduceus: "Excuse me?"
SPOILERS FOR END OF CAMPAIGN . . . this statement was untrue, then became foreshadowing and then it became untrue again thanks to wildmother's special special boy
WOW. STOP. I'M ON THE 1ST WATCH. I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT:,)
@@G.F.SF55I mean, they said “spoilers for the end of the campaign”. Why did you read any further?
@@Skip6235 I didn't answer to the answering commentator, I answered the main comment, I do not know what the 2nd comment says
I’m late to the party (no pun intended) but Caleb told a story of turning Frumpkin to an octopus to save Nott from a fire. But that means Nott was in a burning building for an hour and 10 minutes while he changed form
That tracks
It was a tired fire realy slow just go with it
That's only if he did a ritual cast, otherwise I think it's just 10 minutes if you use a spell slot
I imagined that frumpkin was already a octopus, because an octopus would be useless in a fire.
@@masonchapple7669 The other way around, a ritual adds 10 minutes to the cast time, it is 1 hour normally.
Caleb: are they all swashbuckling swordsmen like you? Molly: no Jester: do they all tell fortunes like you? Molly: no Nott: do they all cut themselves like you? Molly: No, well wait that’s....complicated
Do you have a timestamp for this?
1:54:53
O.O didn't hear the last part/don't remeber that
@@arsonthefiregenasi6841 Reference to one of his fight moves where he cuts himself to make blood swords fyi. Not a suicide joke lol
44:43 Matt: "that is a Mustang!" Liam: "is its name Roy?" Underappreciated joke!!
Rita Cardoso I dont think anyone heard him :(
I mean, the resistance Travis had to have to not name it Roy
I just think it’s hilarious that the FJORD is riding the MUSTANG
@@bartholomewjenkins164 but that was the joke everyone was laughing about already, Liam's was lost to the laughter over that one
@@eglathren I don't think it was. Travis is the voice actor for Roy Mustang. I think the joke is that one.
Makes sense that Travis rolled a warlock. I feel like it's the barbarian of magic users.
If Liam and Travis did audio books, I would listen to them for days.
Liam's done a couple of Dragonlance ones.
@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEllthank you for this information!!
a small thank you too the camera person that not only takes the mini's at a angle now but ZOOMS IN. Thank you SO much omg it made it so difficult to see them sometimes. You deserve AT LEAST a huge slice of cake sometime. Means a lot to those of us with bad eyesight. :>
1000% agree. Also those of us who watch from phones
Liam is so fucking good. I love how deeply he RPs his character.
So true
I loved when his character piped up when he got the books, insta-mindboner
Absolutely. They all do a great job. Of course, these are talented professional actors so they can go a little further than the typical table players, but they demonstrate an aspect of role-playing I try to encourage with the people I play with. Either exaggerate or opposite your "real-life" personality, but don't overdo it to the extent you can't play the character consistently according to how you define them as because your real personality doesn't "think" that way. It's better to just play yourself in a fantasy setting than to make up a character if you can't properly play them as intended.
The reward for being an exceptional DM is having exceptional players bring exceptional characters to your table.
He's inspired me to come up with descriptions for all my spells my new druid has, mostly involving her using her focus somehow, my GM loves them and has given me inspiration dice for doing them several times
"Recently paroled friend Brian Foster" aged like a fine milk.
33:34 Liam's immediate reaction to the zombie death got me feeling some sort of way upon rewatching...
ok i’ve just gone back and watched that and I see what you mean
A hint please? Spoiler into this campaign?
@@Mazortan yep you'll find out soon enough, buuut let's just say he has a really not great experience with fire and people
I mean not just that, but Caleb literally casting fireball himself
with one horse, we got car jokes (ford mustang and shelby mustang), fullmetal alchemist jokes (roy mustang), and possibly two song references (mustang sally and white mustang). i am living.
Don't forget that Travis has officially played Fjord/Mustang...
Travis is the voice of roy mustang
"These shells have been devoured." "The shells have been devoured." "The bells have been deflowered." "The whales are in my power." "The veils are covered in flower." *Appeased nod*
The best ending to that game of "telephone" would have been Molly looking confused, walking over to Fjord, and saying, "Jester passed along a message saying, 'These shells have been devoured,' but I figured there must have been some miscommunication."
Halfway through I was expecting it to go... "These shells have been devoured" "The shells have been devoured" "The bells have been deflowered" "Belle has been deflowered" "Beau has been deflowered" "WHAT!?"
*"Beau has been devoured"*
This was my favorite part. Comedy that is made up on the spot and not planned is the most powerful comedy.
What kind of Loony Toons show was that?
Jester: Can I look at one of your books? Caleb: Yeah, go away. MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
Its so nice seeing Travis being able to take lead with a character that isnt Grog. I like Grog but the low intelligence felt like such a barrier. Fjord can have actual conversations and be involved in the planning.
It’s really nice seeing Travis playing someone who has a normal intelligence. He’s a smart, witty man and it’s nice to see those skills bent towards an Intelligence score higher than single digits.
Very very true, but you've got to admit that Grog was masterful. You could definitely see him drop in and out of character a lot more toward the end of C1 just because Grog isn't really a planner, but other than that he played him amazingly well.
True. I will always love grog, but it's nice to see him playing an intelligent character.
@@WhatIsThisPhuckery You could absolutely see Travis tip to things and know how to resolve certain issues all the time, but then not say anything because Grog wouldn't know it.
Bravo signore
@@aden538 ya mr. willingham played him immensely well.
Quoted from my friend. "Fjord traveled around with Jester. Fjord Escort. Fjord rides a male horse. Fjord's Mustang. Fjord is a Hexblade. His Falchion is a: Fjord Edge. Fjord wants to throw a party. Fjord Fiesta. Fjord sneaks out of the inn. Fjord Escape. Fjord doesn't want to lose concentration, so: Fjord Focus. Maybe Fjord decides to multiclass. Fjord Ranger. Fjord has Eldritch Blast. It's sort of like: Fjord Laser."
Core I hate and love this comment in the same time.
RADU SOCOL same.
Uses find familiar to make a snake named Shelby Shelby Cobra brought to you by Fjord
Fjord pokes the thing Fjord Probe Fjord bull rushes the enemy Fjord Taurus
God fucking damn it
1:21:30 I have decided Caleb is my favorite. He literally has the same reaction I would to getting a new book and it's marvelous.
1:27:37 You can see Matt glance around to see if anyone's watching him, then smile to himself. Love seeing little things like this.
"It is a mustang" "Is ..is its name Roy?" UNDERRATED JOKE
Facts!
This officiated Caleb as my crush

Travis is great, he really carries it with Matt. Does a great job of getting others to roleplay in tough situations and helps everybody out a lot. Makes sure they follow the rules while also make sure everyone is having fun. Both Matt and Travis do a great job of making this enjoyable for everyone.
I wanna see Travis DM a game with the rest of critical role as players
