Ultimate Powerboat Madness from Haulover in Miami to Key West

I chased the Florida Powerboat Club from Miami to Key West during their annual Key West Poker Run. I started in Miami at Haulover Inlet and raced them all the way to Key West, catching them at different spots where they stop for lunch and refueling. Unfortunately, there are no good vantage points to catch them running after they hit Key Largo and all the way down to Key West. In many places on the Overseas Highway though you can see them on the horizon, the dozens and dozens of rooster tails from the boats running at very high speed, very cool.

    • You're not alone. I'm 28 and share a 18ft centre console with my brother in the UK. CC's are just a lovely, dynamic type of boat. They do it all. Going fast in a straight line on the 8 calm days of the year on a boat with no space is just pointless.

  • When I was around 21 (1986) I visited Boca Raton and met a real estate developer who was probably around 60 or so; he wore a track suit, gold chains, drove a slant-nose Porsche and had a girlfrield who appeared to be about 20. He had a diamond encrusted Rolex, beach house, etc, etc. This was a booming, booming time in South Florida. I 'm sure he is long gone now. But good lord, the impression this left on me then, a kid from Massachusetts. It was (and is) a different world there. Extremes of money and materialism and excess that are alive and well. It's like no other place on earth. It's a land of pure fantasy, with all the good and the bad together.

    • @@Mr.Thermistor7228 I’m sorry Jeff, but I just don’t have those kinda bucks! And to be totally honest, my credit score SUCKS! Back in 96, I got ahold of a 1962 Stamas ru-a-bout. About 16’, she was a total pig! So I grabbed my circular saw, made a new shear, dug out the grinders, hulls a shell now ya follow, went to work, added a stringer system, if ya wanna call it that. Long story short, marine plywood 3/8” carpeted floor, and underneath the for deck, 42” bow towards stern, 7” gunnels for decking, used 1 inch divinicil under glass, 2 layers ounce and a half, and 1708 biax.rebuilt entire Transom, primer coat, Awlgrip, Paint, Hunter Green Imron!! Stainless Steel angle tops off transom, running lights, 12 volt battery, trickle charge unit hook up, 4 Perko pole holders, 2 10’ outriggers,I know, I know, but at this point of the game, I said SCREW IT! Let’s have fun now! Added depth fish finder, speedometer, 5 auxiliary fuse box, rigged in Tupperware container. Worked out pretty nicely too I’ll add! Built 2 storage cabinets, and BTW, ALL THE HARDWARE IS STAINLESS STEEL! Hinges, screws, outrigger clips too.except bow light, that’s plastic. (Bummer) 1,000,000 candle watt spot light, to spot the alligators in Port Saint Lucie, Florida which is where I lived at the time. Stuck a 1984 Evinrude 25 Tiller motor on the back, 31-32 MPH! Fast enough for me, boat is now 13 foot, 6” ! I situated a couple boat cushions, made a really nice seat, cut through the water like a knife! Not so sure how I managed to accomplish this, but I was really pleased with the end result. Stern light was interchangeable too, I had a short stub and a 3 footer, for the foggy nights, and just didn’t want to be seen, due to what I was catching! Kept nothing illegal, but just don’t need to be hassled on the water. Boats only flaw, I guess you might say, was hardly any Freeboard! Maybe 3-4 inches near stern. Also, 1.5” rubber RUBRAIL with TEAL insert rubber tube, and she looked beautiful! And a 400 watt power inverter for A/M F/M radio too, and for plugging in additional accessories. Bottom line is that by the time I finished her up, SHE WAS JUST ALL MINE WITH NO PAYMENTS, LIENS, BANK INVOLVEMENT, JUST FREE AND CLEAR ALL MINE! Well, I guess that’s the short story version if you wanna call it that! She gave me almost 10 great years of fun, fishing, and just cruising from Stuart inlet to Jupiter inlet on those calm summer nights!. I was 35 years at the time of starting this project, took all of 8 months, plus working full time in the Aircraft plant I was at. I look back now, and those were definitely some of my best times I’ve ever had, both using it, but building it, adding this, that, makin er my own, I had a FUCKEN BLAST! My wife was a great help too! Especially with the kids, and keeping them away from the nasty things! Paint, resin, epoxy, reducers, awl-fill, and you name it, I probably had it! I worked at the Ralph Evinrude Test center for a year, and Ribovich Marine about 2 years, before going back to Northrop Grumman, when I started the boat! I hope that you enjoyed the story as much as I did living it! God bless all us boaters, and everyone else, boat or not.🙏🐊

  • What’s truly amazing tome is how many people have that kind of discretionary money to afford not only the boats that is just the starter kit like all our toys are there are upgrades to engines turbos nitros livery’s then the up keep slips at marinas or storage then has and regular maintenance I did a cursory investigation into buying a second hand boat even going that way it’s not cheap but you gotta pay to play lol god I love America what a great country we live in that this many people can indulge their passions no other country in the world amen brother
