  • I just introduced my dog to dremel few months ago (i'm used clipper before). First she uncomfortable with the sound and vibration, but with gentle approach, let her sniff it, playing with it, put it in front of her while vibrated, put the handler above her hand while vibrated - she used to it. I love using dremel and when my dog wasn't comfortable enough with it, i just trimmed one or two nails everyday and praised her after that. More often, more she seen it as a usual device and more comfortable she becomes. Now she even could fall asleep when i trimmed her nail with dremel.

    • Yeah, doing just a couple of nails, one paw, or whatever the dog will really reduce stress. And they learn it isn’t a big deal. I started used a grooming hammock when my Golden was about 3 m.o. but it didn’t take long for him to relax enough to stop using it.

  • Using a dremel is the best way, you can get close to the quick without going too far and making it bleed. Also the sharp edges are taken care of with the trim. If you just clip the nails there are still sharp edges that can scratch as bad as long nails.

    • You can see how far from the pulp you are by looking at the filed end of the nail. A long nail will look like a circle, closer to the pump it will be more of a horse shoe shape, and before damaging the pulp it will be visable like a dot in the center.

  • I have the same grinder. I go a bit slower but then my dog’s nails are much shorter. This means heat buildup is likely to be felt. Doing them once a week as a touch up goes much faster. My Golden doesn’t freak but this isn’t something he really enjoys either. Touching up the front paws with a couple of treats doesn’t seem to bother him at all. Then I come back later and do the rear.

  • My dog's claws are black, and it is very hard to see where the vein/quick begins. I am considering to buy a Dremel 7500-N/10 W. My reason to buy this is hoping it will be easier than with standard clippers to avoid injuring my dog's claws. Am I on the right track?

    @DiGiTaLdAzEDM@DiGiTaLdAzEDM2 жыл бұрын
    • I'm thinking the same thing, but looking at this video she's looking at the vein to tell her when to stop.. we can't do that because the nail is all black, so the vein isn't visible. What I'm currently doing is using nail clippers, and then taking off little by little until I see the black dot (that's the tip of the vein) in the center of the nail. Once I see that, I stop immediatly, cutting any more would cause a bleed. Usually, the tip of the nail is a lot thinner and more "hollow" underneath, and that part is usually all nail and no vein - which gives me a rough estimate for how far in I can take the first cut to save some time.. It doesn't look like going for a dremel is a viable choice for me, since I can't tell where the vein is before cutting into the black nail.. I'm gonna do some more research and see what I find tho.

    @Shellnbaby@Shellnbaby Жыл бұрын
    • Do it the same as the others. It’s very important to get the dewclaws as well since they don’t tend to get much friction with the ground when your dog walks… this means it won’t naturally wear down very much and it’s possible for them to grow so long that they can curl into a dog’s paw pad if neglected long enough

    • Go slow with black nails. You’ll know when you’re about to see the quick when you see a white/grayish dot appear. That’s the quick. Don’t go any farther than that. If you accidentally quick them don’t worry it happens. Use kwik stop and apply 15 seconds. All better. Happy grinding ☺️

    • Just grind a bit at a time then move on to the next nail, do the same thing and then come back to the start while you let the nails cool back down. But from my own personal experience I have never had any problem with heat on my my dogs nails. Hope that helps 👍🏽

      @abnerapineru1428@abnerapineru1428 Жыл бұрын
    • press harder The heat transfer on nails isn't good. so as long as you are removing matter. you're removing the heat too. It's when you hold the sander in one place without removing matter for several seconds that heat starts to build up. Move quickly and decisively and you won't have to worry about heat. Having said that, removing matter more quickly means that you are applying more friction and your dog is more likely to feel the vibrations... so to mitigate that, you should secure the dog's nail more firmly. Sidenote, if you are one of those people who like to polish their dog's nails and such, polishing heats up dog's nails very quickly (and does so without removing hardly any matter). When you compare polishing human nails to dog nails, there's much more blood flow in a human's fingertip than a dog's. With a dog, there's barely any blood around the nerve and so it's easier to reach the point where it hurts. So actually, in general a polisher generates more heat than sanding.
