The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Can you imagine how nerve wracking it would be to perform live like this!!!??? No retakes, no auto tune, no overdubbing or backing tracks. They sound amazing!!!!!
I suppose, but keep in mind that MOST performing bands do it that way. Most musicians are not at the world tour level with Apple computers and Auto-Tune running the show. Most of us just get on a stage, plug in, and put on our best performances. Showmanship is being able to minimize mistakes and emphasize entertainment. Performers have no business having stage fright. That’s for people who shouldn’t be up there to begin with.
@@totallyfrozen I guess I thought this was a live TV performance? That’s what I was referring to. I know a lot of “ live” TV performances have auto tune, or lip syncing, or backing tracks going on to help the “live” performer.
Who even know if this was truly played a lot of bands even Ed has said they lip synced, he always preferred live but Ed knew crowds were too loud in a confined space and it would make the band mates loose tempo… not trying to say they didn’t play or discredit them but my grandfather worked a little on the set of Ed Sullivan and said the old stage area with the seats were probably the lobby of a decent sized hotel and it was very hard to even just here camera queues My grandfather always said that they would pre record when they did practice runs just in case… and as well as Ed Sullivan asked bands to play specific songs and if they didn’t follow those lists he would start to have them do lip singing
Nerve wracking to perform your own music? 😂
@@bingchilling4054 FYI, Barbar Streisand Adele, and Ann Wilson all suffer from performance anxiety.
As a person who was a teenager in those days, I can safe that at least for myself, _those were the days_ .

I'm sorry for your loss. Life is hard. Regardless of the existence of life after death, your son is out of pain.
Sorry for ur loss. ❤
I am so so sorry for your loss. 😢 God bless his soul and yours too.
As far as I know my son didn't know this song or band. But I feel your grief, I lost my son 2 1/2 years ago. Didn't have watery eyes until I started this reply. I mostly just wanted to let you know I understand, it's kinda bittersweet. Hearing songs they like. I hope I'm not disrespectful with this😅
Damn maty, this hurts... I'm zo glad that your son loved this song from The Animals but I can't understand your pain and should I could this, I wouldn't got the strenght to deal with that for sure so the deepest respect for you... ❤❤❤
I love how he looks up and smiles in the beginning of the song
I'm 70 now and still love The Animals songs. Eric Burdon's voice was phenomenal!
I am only 51 but my Dad loved Eric Burton and the Animals, and his taste has kind of washed off onto me.
Well over 70 here….and my Dad considered them to be ‘Long haired yobs’….look at them ….😂😂😂 how things change. (Ps I married a Mick Jagger lookalike…..you can imagine how that went down..😂😂😂)
A decade and change before I hit 70, grew up listening to THE ANIMALS..only rock and roll my father would allowed to be played when he was home after Nam.
Voice makes up for the haircut.
@@rosemarywessel1294 For the time his haircut was pretty okay.
He just exudes coolness effortlessly, even in a suit! Love the look and the voice.
Clean cut well dressed, then the cultural revolution began.
The epitome of cool. The hippies ruined everything.
@@user-gw8xv6qg4v Yep.
Yep, Burden was de bollocks alright 👍🏻😎
He had long been performing in front of an audience.
I was 16 when they performed this show...perfect timing to be alive at that age. More absolutely stunning music was soon to come for the next decade or two...I enjoyed every minute of it!
I'm so happy for you, Danny Boy. 🙄
Gals' underpants were coming off too back then when everything was handshakes & lemonade! You can hear it in the crowd! ;)

I have come to the conclusion that Eric Burdon was one of the best of all time.
Pure talent lyrical and acoustic . No gimmick required 🙌🏽.
"For all of you youngsters." Ed Sullivan looks like a youngster to me now.
🍀😜 @Sam McBride I didn't see that coming, Sam! You must keep everyone on their toes, thinking. Thanks for sharing.
Saw them mid 60s. So good
They had a way about them that other English bands didn’t have. But they stayed groovy without being harsh. Eric’s voice was powerful.
probably due to them being working class Geordies
Condivido pienamente sono magici 👍🌟👍🌟👍
Them and the Beatles!
Eric Burdon’s voice is so addicting! Still listening to him almost on a daily basis.. Loved this group since they landed in the US!
A awesome group back in 1965,year before I was born 💖
Me too !
Yes I listen to Eric’s music almost daily too. I’m only a couple of years younger than he is, so this was my favorite era.
When you realize your parents were cooler than you

Here's music.!!! Just my opinion. Who else agrees?
Eric Burdon had a very powerful, expressive voice. Good live performance

No autotune on the vocals, and musicians making honest music. This is such a great performance by Eric Burdon and The Animals. May Chas Chandler and Hilton Valentine rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️
Many of the performances on Ed Sullivan were lip sung
also people dont understand how much compression they use they days,,makes everything the loudest thing in the mix and unrealistic

No reason for autotune back then and on Ed Sullivan only the Supernova Stars performed.

A great group 👍
This is better then the studio version his voice just sounds so confident and powerful
One of my favorite groups from the original British Invasion of the sixties. Eric Burdon could really belt out those songs! Love them and their music!
Timeless ‼️💃 so glad I grew up in the 70s 😂😂🫣😵💫🤣🤯. Far out
Was and am now totally into this group. The music and words and singing. They were and always will be one of the best groups and part of the British Invasion of the 60's. ❤
This sounds much better than all studio edits/autotune garbage. Absolutely phenomenal display of talent.
This live version of The Animals "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" on The Ed Sullivan Show is both an impeccable performance and song. I reluctantly confess that I only know that this fantasic melody exists because it randomly played one day several years ago on a local radio station inside a car owned by my late adoptive father and this memorable song cemented further in my memory when I unexpectedly heard it again around the time my late adoptive father passed away multiple years ago. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by The Animals is a timeless tune regardless of the type of occasion a music listener first hears it.
You really need to see Nina Simone's original performance.
There was an edginess about Eric Burdon that was extremely compelling. Excellent live performance!
We always watched Ed Sullivan in our home. I was so excited the evening Eric Budon and the Animals performed. Animal Tracks was the first album ever bought.
The animals is one of those bands you listen to once and you can't stop for days! When I started to listening to rock in mid 00's in high school this band became in one of my very favorites, they were just perfect, their rock is savage and charismatic. Thanks for uploading this video!
They sound great singing live! Eric Burdon's voice was phenomenal!
Ed sullivan, Thank you for your interest in all types of performers.
Eric Burden was always the coolest guy in the room and projected confidence.
I totally love this group! Thanks to classic rock radio stations i discovered these talented artists.
He should’ve pushed the mic up
I remember watching this show. I'm 71now. Ed Sullivan had a number of great acts. I saw Elvis and the Beetles on the show.
I’m 32 and still paying tribute to the animals. 💗 love their sound and music! I remember listening to the animals on the oldies gold station with my aunt when I was younger and this sound has always stuck with me! Play it for my kids now.

Such a good song. I wasn't born till two years later.
After listening to some to the new stuff they call music these days, coming back to this video was a most pleasurable experience.
The great Alan price on keyboards and chas chandler who managed Jimi Hendrix and Slade on bass, what a great band❤
Ha ! I thought I was going crazy ! Thinking he looked like Alan Price! Thanks for confirming.

As others mentioned, live rock n roll at its finest. No backing tracks, no samples, just TALENT. Brilliant.
That VOX guitar Hilton Valentine is playing is the very rare prototype given to him by VOX. (@2:34 is a great shot). So rare that the vintage/legacy online VOX catalog doesn't show a single example. But it's the same 'Droplet' white body shape that Brian Jones would use(another prototype), a lot, with the Rolling Stones, but the 12-String version. It's a Mark XII series, Droplet, 2 pickup with Bigsby. But that didn't matter at the time when I saw this exact performance as a 15 year old in the rec room of my house in Franconia, Virginia. The lyrics of , 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood'...spoke to me and my generation. Brilliant raw, live performance by The Animals. And thank you Lord for allowing me to live long enough to see it again. Amen.
Great guitar and a nice story cheers mate
Love the animals as much today at 73 as I did when I was 15...Love me Eric....animals..and war.....
Very sad how many today will never realize how amazing the Animals were!
It's not true at the all.. I've realized :-)
I’m 23 years old and this songs been on repeat for a week straight lmao, word to American me and my mom lmao
Actually I The Animals are winning massive amounts of new fans. Their music seems to hit the spot and they have stood the test of time and their music has not dated like a lot of their contemporaries who may have been more famous a few decades ago.
RIP the two members of The Animals Chas Chandler (December 18, 1938 - July 17, 1996), aged 57 Hilton Valentine (May 21, 1943 - January 29, 2021), aged 77 You both will be remembered as legends.

They sound great singing live!
Ed Sullivan was the first opportunity to see so many performances

Hello Lisa how are you doing today
Just a great performance, I was a 8 year old kid when I seen this on Ed Sullivan, my oldest brother watched this variety show every Sunday at 6:00 in the 60s, I seen all the British bands, Beatles, Dave Clark 5, Rolling Stones,Zombies, etc. The best part of my story is that 40 years later I met Eric Burdon and his keyboard player at the time who was popular in England in the 60s, Brian Auger he played Jazz , he had a drummer named Steve Ferrone who later joined Average White Band. Any way I spent about 15 minutes with Eric and he spoke about his friends from England, John Lennon,Brian Jones and Jimi Hendrix from Seattle but was famous first in England, he expressed how much he missed them, interesting enough was that all these guys wear the leaders of their bands, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Eric told me about how he and John Lennon and Brian Jones use to cruise around in England and that nobody was as cool as they were, think about it at that time these 3 Rock Bands, Beatles, Stones and the Animals were the best of that time in the mid sixties, maybe some of you remember those times. Yes I'm bragging about me and Eric Burdon in the same room ! I have his autograph to prove it . Thanks !
Soooooo cool

Oh the young lads. This boys were the future of rock and roll. They may not have know then. But were/are the first.
Excepțional !!! O voce de milioane !!!👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴
I was 10 when they did this. It was a great time to be young for sure. Eric had one of the greatest voices, hard to believe it came out of one so young, just a great band and looked real smart and bad ass. We were spoiled then and never realised it, another great voice around that time was Stevie Winwood who was in the Spencer Davis group and then Traffic.
I was a teenage boy when this was released - and it reverbrated right down to the depths of my soul. This summed up my teenage years so perfectly. I've never forgotten it and I doubt I ever will. It's still there, surrounded by memories.
True Classic! Love From So. California
When I was around seven years old, among my parents records, I found one by The Animals and this was one of the tracks on it. I will never forget it

I saw the Animals in concert in 1983 at the Orange Stadium in Orlando, Florida. They opened for The Police. The Fixx also performed earlier in the show. Eric Burdon’s voice still turns me on all of these years later.

I find it baffling that Bruce Springsteen described Eric Burdon as ugly. It really is difficult to fathom.
