England gained independence from the Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries, but it's tricky to discuss independence in England because it was a place where many invaders came and went over centuries after the Roman Empire. Although the Roman Empire eventually retreated from England, what they left behind was not a single English state. Instead, the Celtic and Roman peoples there were faced with centuries of invasions from northern European tribes, such as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. Once this initial wave of invaders settled in England and established kingdoms of their own, the British Isles were subject to centuries of Viking raids from the 8th to 11th centuries. This chaotic period finally came to an end in 1066 when another invader, William the Conqueror, crossed over from Normandy and conquered England. So while England may have become independent of Rome in the 4th and 5th centuries, it wouldn't be until William the Conqueror's victory in 1066 that a strong, permanent English state would emerge. This state could repel foreign invasions and would maintain England's independence up through the present day. 😊👍♥️🇬🇧
