1:31 Basics of Drifting
5:03 Mini Turbo Deep Dive
7:45 Advanced Drifting Tech
In this video, I cover pretty much everything you need to know for learning how to drift properly in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, starting with the very basics including how to start a drift, and ending with advanced techniques, including the most important tech in the game: Soft Drifting
Mario Wiki for stat information: www.mariowiki.com/Mario_Kart_...
With this I will be able to drift better than my joycons
My joycons just got the dreaded drift yesterday :-/
@@Bayesic u can try to reset in settings
@@Bayesic Spray that drift away with compressed air. Does wonders.
@@Bayesic you'll laugh but, put your joycons on a table and use the find joycon function on the switch to vibrate the dirt loose.
@@Bayesic I’m sorry for your loss T_T
It's crazy how it's so hard to find ACTUAL advanced information about a game that sold 33+ million times, thank you so much for making this video and the time trial tutorials!
Thanks for that! I’m definitely trying to approach these videos in a more systematic way so that it’s easy for people to find out information about exactly what they’re looking for. The positive feedback I’m getting is really encouraging!
I know, right? I was struggling to find any, when tryied to research it a year ago.
probably cause 8 and 8 DX are seen as the “casual” mariokarts
So true, I always get near last online because I can't drift properly, hope this video helps.
33+ million? I think it's already at 50+ million!
Never knew wiggle drifting was this bad. I’ve just been doing it naturally since MKDS.
wiggle drifting is only viable in 64, Double Dash and DS.
@@theAstarrr because it had a manual counter drift aka the mini-turbo charges based on how many times you rock the stick or d-pad left and right. From Mario Kart Wii onwards, drifting is automatic counter aka the mini-turbo charges based on how long you're powersliding.
Same!
another snaker it is
@@lol-ih1tl 😩 Im So Used To Wiggle Drifting But Notice It Doesn’t Work In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. . . Is There An Option To Change It???
Okay, wiggling while drifting is bad. Noted. Now i gotta fight some heavily build up muscle memory. :| Thanks for the video! I learned a lot!
Practice makes perfect haha. After a while it just feels more right
I blame my MK64 years for the wiggling habit... eeee EEEE *EEEE*
@@Broman973 Funny story. The last Mario kart game I played prior to Mario kart 8 deluxe was Mario kart 64. I got it as a gift for my daughter, and she basically forced me to play on 200cc special cup It took me SO Long to adjust to the fact that you don’t have to wiggle the joystick back-and-forth to build up mini turbos. I was like “what the hell is going on“
Almost same thing for me dude. I grew up on Double Dash!! and mashing is the way.
@@Broman973 hahaha true
Going into this, I honestly thought I had known everything about drifting. I had already taught myself to brake drift, but I never realized the importance of neutral drifting over wiggle drifting, and I haven’t ever seen someone charge a boost in mid air. Definitely an informative video.
Thanks man it’s pretty cool how many ppl have gotten something useful out of this video
I legit charge boost midair all the time lol, especially before the glider section in music park it really makes you skip through everyone
same, i came here after beating all the 200cc nin time trials and i was thinking i was hot stuff.... but after watching alot of pro time trials and how i could of drifted better i feel like i could improve them alot... that said, just to flex a bit i already had an idea about neutral drifting and mastered break drift (at least to a degree) but that mid air drift threw me for a loop... i also noticed how after a drift or on a small straight he would hop 3 times, im guessing that was to extend the the boost time? or to charge up a drift faster? im not to sure but im surprised he didnt add that technique into this video. or i missed it.
@@levi7492 hops are for alignment. Fire hopping is not in 8 deluxe
@@pastor_x whats fire hopping? is that the term for extending drifts? and there r hops that do help charge drifts faster (thought id mention it, i wasnt sure if u were saying that its not possible in this or not) which is how ppl can just drift in a straight line and gain boost, hella difficult to do)
I could've sworn wiggle drifting helped me get miniturbos faster, glad I learned something new! I'll try neutral drifting in my next games
I actually never noticed how drifts can progress in the air! This tutorial was really helpful, thanks!
Best succinct explanation I’ve seen of soft drifting
I've been looking for a video covering this topic and in detail for sooo long. Really hoping I can improve my drift game with this video
Glad you enjoyed it :-) I'd also definitely recommend checking out the MK8DX Records KZhead channel and the Mario Kart 8 speedrunning discord at discord.com/channels/199214365860298752 The community there is pretty friendly and really helpful for figuring out how stuff in this game works
I've been playing Mario Kart 8 since 2014 and the Deluxe version since 2017, and I've learned a lot from this video. Great information and explanations
Do you know if the azure rollers and regular rollers have the same stat
@@turtlegamer7671 yes they have the same stats
@@seanysean thanks man
After all this time playing this game (~800 hours into it), I was having a tough time making clean, tight corners. It was partially due to fear of hitting the wall or running out of bounds. It is past time for me to learn how to do this, especially now with the DLC out. Learning how to do vector gliding would help, too. Thank you for sharing these techniques with us. There aren't too many vids out there that go deep into detail or tell you the secrets of soft drifting.
Bayesic: Everything you need to know about drifting Joycons: Rookies 😎
I'm definitely guilty of wiggle drifting. I had no idea that neutral drifting was faster, and it kind of isn't that intuitive, either! Is it still faster even if you can build a higher tier MT while holding the more steep angles into your drift? That seems like the biggest weakness of this neutral drift method.
So in terms of actual movement speed, neutral drift > soft drift > hard drift. Not sure I explained this point particularly well, but generally on 200 if a turn is shallow enough that you can hug it tightly with a neutral drift, it's faster to do so than it is to wiggle and get the next level of MT (see the WR ghosts for sweet canyon and cheep cheep beach before the first underwater section) for examples. It's basically because the movement is slower, and the little wiggles have a much larger impact on your lines in 200 than 150. In 150 it's kind of the opposite in that if you can build up the next level of MT, then you generally want to try and do so. That being said though, there really aren't that many situations where you absolutely need to wiggle drift to build up levels of mini turbo, since soft drifting will generally work out just fine
Probably the most useful and underrated mk8dx video I've seen
I would love more videos like this. 1) Specific to people who are working to go from moderate to advanced. 2) narrow focus - a lot of detail on one to two topics 3) advanced info that is broken down enough for someone at my level to use.
I just binged a lot of your channel and, oh boy, I think this has genuinely been the best resource I’ve found on mario kart physics and techniques for better racing. It’s so hard to find more advanced tips that are actually comprehensible to the average person. Thank you so much for your videos!
Absolutely awesome and useful guide. I've been playing for a while and had no clue soft drifting was in MK8D and wasn't just left in Wii, so thanks a bunch! Hope to see more like this.
If you played wii 4:12 is weird
The time stamps in your videos are really useful. Thanks for adding them!
As I’ve been watching more of your videos and comparing my own gameplay to your tips, I’m honest amazed that I’ve been doing advanced drifting techniques without even knowing full depth on optimization. However, as I’ve started to practice in time trials, I really notice the difference and ease of play implementing more neutral drifts and especially soft drifting after knowing the visual clock memory technique to reference. I’ll come back to this video for years to come to just practice more with this on the side to fully master drifting and become an even better player. Thank you very much Bayesic!
Thanks for the kind words! It makes me really happy to hear how much these videos have helped the MK8 community out
Wow, bought this game a week ago for my son, got hooked on it myself but have been looking for a video clearly explaining the drift mechanics as I was getting really frustrated with how long it took me to accumulate mini boost. I watched several videos and this was the best by far. Good job and thanks.
I THANK YOU MY DUDE, THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!
Most fun to watch video of Mario kart I’ve watched so far. It’s really great work. Didn’t really got something new out of it except the thing with the mini-turbo score, didn’t know about that. Anyway keep up that high quality content, it’s awesome
Thanks man appreciate it!
Funny, I use the R button to drift instead of the ZR. The R button has less travel, so reacts a bit more direct.
I primary use R cause it felt the most natural but I occasionally alternate to ZR for quicker repeated use
I use R because of CTR.
same
I use r because it makes less noise
You can just spam with the r button, and it is more easy to use.
I would have never known about the "2&10" angles. Great video.
I'm already mind blown by the intro. I read in-game that mini-turbo's sparks can go from blue to orange to PURPLE if you can hold a drift long enough, with screenshots of what this looks like. I love drifting in MarioKart (It's literally WHY I play, I just love the movement of drifting that much that it's basically the main thing holding my attention) so naturally I go straight to Dragon Driftway to try and master Purple Drifting (At the time I'd only seen orange sparks like twice.) I figured if I can simply drift long enough, like the game told me, it'd Just Work Here I am watching you effortlessly get all the purple drifts in the intro that I simply kept missing when I first learned about it lol
I had been playing mk8 since launch (not consistently) and had no clue the drift feature was this complex ! Thanks 👍
You’re absolutely amazing for making this video 🙌🏻.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, I understand alot of it but not entirely but that ok because not that I got a good understanding I can practice and figure out the rest for myself
Super dope video and everything was well explained. My wife and I just got into MK8D and are loving these tips!
Drifting really helped me as a beginner, I was frustrated and kept getting losses but I got in 2nd online once I learned how to drift properly best feeling ever 😎
Well written and easy to understand, thankyou
Thought I was already quite good at drifting but I still learned a couple of things and really enjoyed the video! You earned yourself a new subscriber!
Very helpful video. Excellent for players who are stuck in the middle between beginner and advanced.
The video i have been waiting for so well explained, well done
Dude I literally made it to the top 10 for like 10 minutes in the NA open vs tournament yesterday and it's all thanks to your advice. You are incredible thank you!
Very nice!
THIS IS THE MOST UNDERRATED CHANNEL!!! When I came to this channel I thought it would have at least 250K to 1M subs. Love your content and keep up the great work!
In the second half of the year, I’m going to be grinding to 50, so wish me luck!
@@Bayesic Wow! I didn’t think you’d see this! I hope you reach your goal!
this is honestly the most helpful video i have ever watched. now im a master at 200cc bc of this video. ty man ur a real one
Thanks for the tips!!! I’ve been trying to get better at drifting lately in MK8DX, and this helped a lot!!!
Very good structure and explaination! Keep it up :)
i watched this video a year ago and i came back to it today after remembering it. your channel has made me really good at mario kart, i used to be the average kid at the game. But after using all your techniques i win almost every online game, Thanks
Rly good vid man becuase when i was bad at the game i was spending hourse trying to find a video about how to soft drift and what it was. I also liked how you used the clock instead of degrees to discribe where to hold your stick to soft drift so it is easier to understand for some people.
I didn't know the argument was so complex, thank you very much
this guy makes some EPIC content! a lotta people are gonna thank you for this man, keep going!
Thank you so much for that!
Me : *train drifting for being a skilled online player* Red turtle shell: "Let me introduce myself" Blue Turtle Shell : "Hello There" Lightning strike : "Cool drifting mate"
Thanks bro you deserve more subs, this is the first I've heard about half of these
Awesome guidance for a beginner. I’m still new to MK8D in 2021 and learning how to control it. From a MKT player 😊
It definitely takes some practice to get the hang of it haha. Glad to hear that this helped you out!
i dont know why but i just love the way you say "yoshi bike" 2:59
Honestly just the fact that u constructed ur video so well deserves a like
This is the PERFECT VIDEO I was looking for!!
The magenta explanation earned my LIKE
This was very helpful I never rlly utilized neutral drifting up to this point
Thank you for making this video and breaking down how mechanics work because each mario kart treats drifting differently. Wii was my favorite and it feels so weird to me how the drifting feels. Mario kart ds was literally just how fast you could steer back and forth.
This is super helpful, thank you!
Thank you for this! My partner told me about drifting, but I still haven't quite gotten the hang of it. This will help so much!
I searched "what is inside drift mario kart" and this was the only relevant result. Glad for it, too, because this was super helpful.
Good info I’ve mostly tapped the break button to maintain my drift on tight corners
that was so insightful. going to try and apply it now!
whoops, forgot to say thank you. thank you!
4:39 This part was an instant like on the video above any info I heard before or the info I will learn after it LOL
This is the hill I’m choosing to die on
Seriously, all this about drift? ...men that is crazy. Pure awesome. Loved the description.
Awesome video, I always assumed mini-turbo was based on the angle you drifted into (MT = 90o, SMT = 180o, UMT - 270o) I always knew this wasn't entirely true, but it served me well nontheless.
Never heard of brake drifting, I will be trying that now. Thanks for the post!!
Really helpful video. Thanks for the research and content!
Amazingly well made vid!
Thank you!
I've been "wiggle-drifting" since at least Double Dash.... You could have told me sooner that this was slowing me down! But for reals, awesome and informative video!
Nice video, I actually learned some new things
Awesome tutorial, thanks!
Such a great source of information. You’ve cut crazy time off my trials.
Extremely helpful thanks.
Wow! Amazing content bro!
I've played since double dash, I don't know whether its a new thing but when I discovered brake drifting the other day on my own on 200cc I was amazed, you can't hold B down too long tho it completely brings you to a stop
Thanks, will definitely watch you on twitch
Holy cow, dude. The gameplay demonstrations of some of this tech is actually cracked lmao. I had no idea wiggle drifting was so terrible! Slowly climbing my way up at like 3k right now, so I've got plenty of time to learn some of the more advanced tech. Great video.
Thanks! The sky is the limit when it comes to improving at the game
You got my like just with the magenta explanation 😂😂😂 Brilliant
Very helpful video. I'm new to Mario Kart and this was very informative. :D
Great vid. Thanks for the tips
Aww, thx, now I will implement the last technique to my gameplay, the others can easily be noticed when playing a long time
Great video man 👏
i just got mk8 dx after maiming daisy with the mach bike on mkwii for years so this was definitely needed, thank you
Finally a soft drift tutorial! I'm a time trialer and former record holder of this track in 200cc, actually, and these techniques are really relevant in this game as a whole
A big thank you for the video! I'm an absolute beginner. Never played a Mario Kart game. For days I've been looking for a video that explains the drifts and how to drive them. I had to watch your video slowly a few times because English is not my first language, but I'll try it tomorrow. Unfortunately for me, I've been riding the Yoshi Bike 🙈 for days now because the bike suits me better overall. But I always had extreme problems with cornering. Now I know why 😄. - Thanks again and big thumbs 👍🏻 up for your video.
great video man
Thank you very much. This was super helpful
Became a wiggle drift master ever since Mario kart double dash and Mario kart DS. I was wondering why I could never catch up to some players even though I was drifting and driving the same spots as them on deluxe. Finally Understand and it makes more sense. They made it like a legit car, more angle=less speed
very impressed with this video great work.
Thanks for the help, I might use these later! :)
Cool video, I've mastered all of these but still enjoyed the video :D
Glad you made the analogy of the clock I am so tired of people telling me to hold my joycon 30 degrees to the y axis 😂
excellent info, i just wish there were more!
As someone who has been playing MKWii for years, I’m surprised to hear that the switch has made new ways of drifting. When the air drifting was mentioned I was SHOOK 👁👁 that sounds like such an advantage bc we’ve never had that in past mk games (at least to my knowledge)
Wow, this helped me alot after I discovered brake drift is a thing and somehow not know for over a year lmao, thank you so much tho really, I appreciate it
Bro still answers comments. Legend.
You’re a fucking legend for spending so much time to make these detailed videos!!
Great video thanks
This is a great video!
Hey this is awesome! I didn't know you could mid-air drift XD also I almost understood the 5 point drift angles as appsed to 1 point drift angles. what I mean is, I figured wiggling my analog stick to both seize the drift sparks and control the character before I even watched this video XD I've been doing this since 3ds mainly as ds had the dpad to steer with, then 3ds with the analog pad. But thank you for showing me the best angles, to drift or steer the other way after a drift and to drift in the air to grab that extra boost power. Thanks! You're wicked, have a nice day!
Thank you so much for that! Oh and just to make sure I didn't misinform, you have to start the drift before you get into the air, but you can keep holding that drift once you're in the air. If you try and START the drift in mid air your kart is gonna go all crazy haha
This video functions as advertised. Great content.
This really hits the spot
And here I thought my wiggle drifts were pretty good. This was super helpful!
Amazing video thank you
this is so cool thank youu
